To all whom it 7nd, concern.-
Be it known that I, AB SALOM B. WELLS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Washington, in the District of Columbia, have invented a new and useful Hose-Coupling, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to hose-couplings, and has for its object to provide simple and effective means for detachably connecting a hose-section to a pipe or nozzle and to dispense with the usual screw-threaded connection between the hose-section and the nozzle.
With these and other objects in view the present invention consists in the combination and arrangement of parts, as will be hereinafter more fully described, shown in the accompanying drawings,and particularly pointed out in the appended claims, it being understood that changes in the form, proportion, size, and minor details may be made within the scope of the claims without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective View of a hose-coupling embodying the features of the present invention. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view thereof. Fig. 3 is a detail sectional view taken through the end of the hose-section to illustrate the manner of connecting the swinging bail thereto. Fig. 4 is a detail view of the nozzle.
Like characters of reference designate corresponding parts in all the figures of the drawlngs.
As illustrated in the accompanying drawings, the coupling is made up of two tubular members, (designated 1 and 3, respectively.) The relatively fixed or body member or nozzle proper, 1, is'designed to have its rear end fitted within the hose-section 3 and is provided with an intermediate external annular shoulder 4 to abut against the end of the hosesection and limit the inward movement of the fixed body member or nozzle.
Although the rigid member 1 has been shown with an enlarged interiorlyscrewthreaded coupling 10 at its outer end, which is designed to receive tips of different sizes and shapes, it will of course be understood that any form of coupling may be employed at this point.
For connecting the rigid member or nozzle 1 to the hose-pipe section 3 the forward end Serial No. 100,550. (No model.)
1 of the latter is provided with a metallic collar or band 11, having an inwardly-directed annular flange 12 to overlap the outer end of the hose-section. A substantially U-shaped bail 13 diametrically straddles the band or collar 11 and is swung thereto by means of pivot-pins 14,Which pierce the ends of the hail, the collar or band,and the adjacent sides of the hose-section, so that in addition to forming pivots for the hail the pins 14 also serve to hold the collar or band to the hose-section. The nozzle or rigid member 1 is provided with a laterally-directed external shoulder or projection 15, lying between the annular shoulder 4 and the outer end of the member and adapted to have the bail l3 forced over the shoulder and engaged with the forward side thereof, so as to. hold the annular shoulder 4 in snug engagement with the end of the hose section, and thereby form a strong and durable and also detachable connection between the nozzle and the hose-section. It will of course be understood that the shoulder 15 is located at a predetermined distance from the shoulder 4, substantially corresponding to the length of the bail 13, so that it is necessary to employ considerable force to snap or press the bail into engagement with the shoulder 15 in order that a tight and effective connection may be had between the nozzle and the hose. the front end of the shoulder or keeper is abrupt, as it is disposed at substantially right angles to the nozzle, whereby it requires con- It will be noted that siderable force to disengage the bail therefrom. The nozzle may be readily detached from the hose by forcing the pivotal bail out of engagement with the shoulder 15.
There are several very important features embodied in the coupling or connection between the hose and the nozzle. One of these features resides in the fact that the metallic nozzle member is smooth and of considerable length between the inner end of the member and the shoulder 4, whereby the nozzle may be forced into the flexible hose, and it is therefore not necessary to rotate the nozzle, as in the ordinary screw-threaded form of coupling. In addition to this in forcing the nozsame and cause it to more firmly grip the nozzle and, in effect, form a continuous washer from the rear or inner extremity of the nozzle to the shoulder 4. Another feature is brought about by the fact that the flange 12 of the band 11 is of a length less than the thickness of the hose, so as to terminate short.
of the opening formed in the hose, whereby the inner exposed edge of the flexible hose around the opening is compressed between the band 11 and the inserted portion of the nozzle, and thereby acts as a washer to form a water-tight joint between the shoulder 4 and the flange 12 of the band.
From the foregoing description it is apparent that the invention provides very simple and at the same time very effective means for connecting a nozzle or any ordinary pipe to a hose, and said connection can be conveniently manipulated to facilitate the application and removal of the nozzle. Practical experiment has demonstrated that a watertight joint is produced which will stand the ordinary city pressure without leaking.
What I claim isl. The combination with a flexible hose, of a rigid tubular member fitted snugly within and projected from one end of the hose, a stiff band rigidly fitted to one end of the hose and provided with a flange which embraces the end wall of the hose, but is of a length less than the thickness of the hose, so as to terminate short of the opening formed in the hose, and means carried by the band for connecting the hose to the exposed end of the rigid member.
2. The combination with a flexible hose, of a rigid tubular member fitted snugly within and projected from one end of the hose, with a portion bearing against said end of the hose to limit the insertion of the member, a lateral projection upon the rigid member in front of the hose, and a bail straddling the hose with its opposite terminals pivoted thereto and its closed free end frictionally embracing the projection.
3. The combination with a flexible hose-section, of a rigid tubular member fitted snugly within and projected from one end of the hosesection, and provided with a shoulder hearing against said end of the hose to limit the insertion of the member, that portion of the hose extending from the shoulder to the inner end of the rigid member being compressed upon the latter and forming a continuous washer, a rigid band snugly embracing the end of the hose-section contiguous to the shoulder, and means carried by the band for engaging with the exposed end of the rigid member and holding the end of the hose-section in contact with the shoulder.
4. The combination with a flexible hose, of a collar or band embracing the same, a swinging bail embracing the collar, pivot-pins connecting the bail to the collar and also connecting the collar to the hose, and a nozzle fitted snugly within the hose and having a keeper disposed for engagement by the bail to detachably connect the member with the hose.
6. The combination with a flexible hose-section, of a rigid tubular member fitted snugly within and projected from one end of the hosesection, means for limiting the insertion of the said member within the hose, that portion of the hose traversed by the rigid member being compressed upon the latter and forming a continuous washer, a rigid band embracing the forward end of the hose-section and secured thereto and provided with an inwardly-bent flange which fits against the extremity of the hose, said flange being of a length less than the thickness of the hose so as to terminate short of the opening formed in the hose for the purpose described, and means for connecting the hose to the exposed end of the rigid member.
7. A hose-coupling, comprising a flexible hose-section, a tubular metallic member having one end snugly fitted within the hose and provided with an external peripheral shoulder lying against the end of the hose a stiff band snugly embracing the end of the hose and having an inner peripheral flange lying against the end of the hose between the latter and the shoulder of the tubular metallic member and terminated short of the inner wall of the hose, and means extending between the tubular metallic member and the band for detachably fastening the tubular member to the hose-section.
8. The combination of a flexible hose-section, having a metallic band embracing one end portion thereof and provided with an inner annular flange lying against the extremity of the hose and terminated short of the inner wall thereof, a nozzle having its rear end snugly fitted within the hose and provided with an external annular shoulder lying against the end of the hose, a shoulder projected laterally from the nozzle with its forward end disposed at substantially right angles to the nozzle, and aswinging bail straddling the end of the hose, with its opposite ends pivotally connected to the band and its free end detachably engaging the abrupt shoulder on the nozzle.
