F. J. BERNHARDT.
HOSE GOUPLING. No. 593,190. Patented Nov. 9, 1897.
Win-1355655: Inusntor,
UNITED STATES FRANK J. BERNHARDT,
Artnr l @einem OF WAUSAU, WISCONSIN.
HOSE-COUPLiNG.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 593,190, dated November 9, 1897.
Application filed June 12, 1896.
To all wiz/om, 751'; 'may concern,.-
Beit known that I, FRANK J. BERNHARDT, a citizen ofthe United States, residing at the city of Vausau, in the county of Marathon and State of Wisconsin, have invented a certain new and useful Hose-Coupling, of which the following is a specification. l
My invention relates to improvements in hose-couplings, and more particularly to that class of hose-couplin g known as snap hosecouplings.
As heretofore constructed, none of this class of hose-couplings have been entirely successful owing to difficulties in operating it and owing to the fact that a perfectly tight joint has not been obtainable in the construction.
The objects of my invention, therefore, are to provide a hose-coupling which is simple in its construction, accurate in its working, that does not form an obstruction either on the outside or the inside of the hose, and that is easy and convenient to operate and not liable to any leakage. Further minor objects will appear definitely in the detailed description. I accomplish these objects of my invention by the devices and means described in the following specification and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is an elevational view of a hosecoupling embodying the features of my invention, a portion of the outer coupling` being broken away to show inside details. Fig. 2 is a sectional view on line 2 2 of Fig. 1, looking in the direction of the little arrows at the end of the section-lines.
.Similar letters of reference refer to similar parts throughout both views.
Referring to the lettered parts of the drawings, A is the male coupling, and B is the female coupling. These join together by a tapering or conical-shaped joint. 0n the male portion a suitable groove is cut, in which is inserted packing-ring or gasket E. At the bottom of the female portion another groove is cut to receive the packing or gasket F. An annulus is cut inthe male portion next to the shoulder, which has a square shoulder toward the outer end of the coupling. On suitable annulus G of the male portion.
stan No. 595,236. (No man.)
between the opposite ends and the couplings and serve to throw the hook C' into engagement with the annulus G.
It will be seen from this description that all that it is necessary to do to uncouple this coupling is to grasp the ends of the lever C between the thumb and finger, which will compress the springs c, and withdraw the hook portion from the annulus, when the coupling will readily part. To couple the same, it is only necessary to crowd the two parts firmly together, and when they reach the proper point the hooks C' will snap into the annulus G, and Owing to the position of the pivot will in doing so tend to draw the joint more securely together. This forces the parts securely against the packing or gasket between.
It will be noted from this that my improved hose-couplin g is less complicated and requires less labor in its operation than any other. That it is very secure is owing to the special arrangement of the parts. There is no yielding of the joint and no obstruction to the hose outside or in, and the saine will swivel freely and prevent any twisting of the hose. I desire to say that it is capable of somevariation in its structure without departing from my invention. By a very careful iitting of the joints gaskets E and F might be dispensed with. For ordinary purposes I only prefer the gasket F, dispensing with the gasket E. I have also used the gasket E alone very successfully. /Both together make a surer joint under ordinary constructions than one alone, though for ordinary pressures in the watermains one gasket meets every requirement.
It is needless to say that the springs c can the pivots D may be riveted to position instead of being screwed fast.
Other changes in details would doubtless occur to those skilled in the art to which my invention pertains.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- 1. In a hose-coupling, the combination of the male coupling A, with an annulus G, to the inner end thereof and a gasket E, around joined to the male coupling by a tapering be of any variety suitable to the position and.
the body of the same; the female coupling IS,

joint having a gasket to the inner end thereof g levers @,With hook portions C', thereon in suitable recesses to the outside of the female coupling B; pivots D, for carrying said levers C', located at a greater distance from the ceuter of the holes than the engaging point for the hooks and springs c, for forcing the ends of the levers outward to cause the hook portion C', to engage the annulus G, on the male coupling and crowding the parts together all coacting together substantially as described for the purpose specified. y
2. In a hose-coupling, the combination of a male coupling A, With an annulus G, thereon the female coupling B, joined thereto by a tapering joint; levers C, in suitable recesses to the outside of the female coupling and beyond the diameter of the annulus G having inwardly-projecting square-faced hook portions to engage the annulus on the male coupling; and springs to hold the said levers normally in the engagement position to draw the couplings together and so that the coupling can be locked or unlocked by grasping the levers to the outside ofthe coupling as specified. 3. In a hose-coupler, the combination of a male coupling A, With an annulus G, thereon; the female coupling B; levers C, to the outside of the female coupling, and beyond the diameter of the annulushavinginwardly projecting hook portions to engage the annulus on the male coupling; and springs to hold the said levers normally in the engaging position so that the coupling can be locked or unlocked by grasping the levers to the outside of the coupling as speciiied.
4. In a hose-coupling, the combination of a male conplingA, with an annulus G, thereon; the female coupling B, joined thereto by a tapering joint; gasket F, to the inner end of the female coupling; levers C, in suitable recesses to the outside of the female coupling and beyond the diameter of the annulus having inwardly-projecting hook portions to engage the annulus on the male coupling; and springs to hold the said levers normally in the engaging position so that the coupling can be locked or unlocked by grasping the levers to the outside of the coupling as specified.
ln Witness whereof l have hereunto set my hand and seal in the presence of two 'Wi tnesses.
