IMPROVEMENT IN STOVE-B'AGK PLATE.

TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:

Be it known that I, GILES F. FILLEY, of the city and county of St. Louis, in the State of Missouri, have invented a new and useful Improved Stove-Back Plate, of ,which the following is a. full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, constituting a. part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 represents a. back view of my plate. l

My invention is designed to secure econor'ny inthe manufacture of and greater durability in back plates of stoves.

In my inventiJu the line of the projection in the buck plate necessary to give room for the increased draughtlue, is curved at the point a, g. 2, instead of being continuedin the direction indicated by the dotted line b, as has heretofore been customary. By this constructionl'the back plate ismede ,at less expense, because it can be cast in a. straight insk,'instead of requiring a. curved one, which renders themoulding much more expensive. The plate, instead of being liable to break at thevpoint c, as is'V frequently the case with those of the old form, is rendered much stronger at this point by my method of construction. My plate is not so liable vto wrp as are others. The top plate of the stove, instead of beingextended as shown by the dotted line e, as is necessary when the back plate takes the direction of the dotted line b, is brought onlyto the pointf, thereby saving a considerable amount of iron and labor. Another advent-nge is the greater convenience and safety in transportntion, since the stove, instead of resting upon the points e and h, as it obviouslyvwonld when tbe back plateis formed in the old way, lies evenly upon the back, and thereby prevents any straining, besides occupying less room. This curvature at a does not injure the draught of the stove, since it is evident from inspection of fig. 2, that there is sucient space between the back plete and the oven at k, to give the-requisite draught.
