UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES D. HIGGINS, OF ABERDEEN, SOUTH DAKOTA.
BUILDING CONSTRUCTION.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 721,188, dated February 24., 1903.
Application filed $epten1ber 17,1902. SerialNo.1Z 3,780. dramatic] To all whom it Wtay concern:
Be it knownthat'l, CHARLES D. HIGGINS, a citizen of the United'States, residing at Aberdeen, in the. county of Brown and State of South Dakota, have invented a new and useful Building Construction, of which the following is a specification. This invention relates generally to building constructions, and particularly to the construction of ventilated walls.
The object of the invention is in a ready, simple, thoroughly-feasible, practical, and inexpensive manner to efiect ventilation of building-walls constructed of concrete or other molded buildingblocks.
With these and. other objects in view, as will appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, the same consists inthe novel construction and combination of parts of a ventilated wall, as will be hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, and'inwhich like numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts, there is illustrated one form o;f embodiment of the invention capable of carrying the same into practical operation, it being understood that the'elements therein exhibited may be varied or changed as to shape, proportion,' and exact manner of assemblage without departingfrom the spirit thereof, and in these.drawings Figure 1 is a vie'win perspective of a portion of a wall constructed in accordance with the present invention and viewed from the exterior. Fig. 2 is a similar View Viewed from the interior? Referring to the drawings, 1 designates generally the building-blocks, which, as before stated, may be constructed of concrete or any other material adapted to be molded to the desired shape, and each block is provided with one or more'ribs or projections 2, the faces of whichare plain-that is to say, devoid of grooves or channels-and the spaces between these ribs when the walls are lathed and plastered constitute ventilating-ducts 3. The gist of the present invention resides in associating with the ribs 2 furring-strips 4, consisting of fiat strips of wood nailed to the ribs and forming a means of attachment for the laths 5, with which is associated the plaster 6 in the usual manner. The ribs 2 ,are provided with recesses 7 -to form seats to su pportthe joists 8, which may be heldproperly spaced apart by being strutted or not, as may be preferred.
In-the construction of a wall in accordance with the present invention the furring-strips are attached to the projections of the building-blocks after the wall is completed, and the laths are then secured in position in the usual manner and the plastering completed. A wall thus constructed will be strong and durable and-will be thoroughly ventilated at all times. Briefly, to sum up, the invention resides in a wall constructed of buildingblocks each having one or more internal ribs molded on 'one side thereof, in combination with furring-strips secured to the ribs and laths secured to the fuming-strips} It will be obvious that the invention may be carried into effect with building-blocks constructed other than those shown, and for this reason it is to be understoodthat the invention is not to belimited to the'precise construction shown.
Having thus described invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A wall constructed of building-blocks havingone'or more ribs or projections on one side thereof the faces of which are plain, in
combination with furring-strips nailed to the said faces, and laths secured to the strips.
- In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
