BUFFING-MACHINE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 721,052, dated February 17, 1903.

To a/ZZ whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, SHERMAN W. LADD, of Beverly, in the county of Essex and State of Massachusetts, have invented an Improve- 5 ment in Bufting-Machines, of which the following description, in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specication, like letters on the drawings representing like parts.
ro The present invention relates to a machine for bufng the soles of boots and shoes, and is intended as an improvement on machines of the class shown in patent to Webster, No. .L9O, tl9, dated January 24., 1893.
The present invention relates especially to the construction of the spindle forcarrying the abrasive pad and the parts directly coperating therewith, said spindle having its bearings in a bracket adapted to be attached zo to the framework of the machine,
The spindle has connectedtlierewith a foot provided with a clamp to hold a flexible hollow expansive pad provided with an abrasive cover in the form of a disk which is rotated z 5 rapidly by said spindle,the flexible pad constituting a yielding cushion to. support the abrasive material against the pressure of the boot or shoe sole presented to it to bebued.
The pad is hollow, and the spindle and its 3o bearing-bracket are so constructed as to provide for the admission of air from the framework of the machine, so as to inflate the pad in order to provide the proper yielding support for the abrasive cover.
Figure l is a side elevation of a portion of the batting-machine embodying this invention, and Fig. 2 a longitudinal section of the lower portion thereof.`
The spindle a, provided with a driving-pulley a?, runs in bearings b b2, secured in a bracket c, provided with an arm or stem c2, adapted to be fastened in the framework of the machine by which the spindle ct is supported and operated. The stem c2 and upper portion of the bracketc are provided with an air-passage (shown in dotted lines at c3) leading to a cap c4, into which the upper end of the spindle o, extends, said spindle being itself provided with longitudinal bore or passage a3, (see Fig. 2,) which communicates 5o with the passage-'c3 in the bracket, the cap c4 of which is provided with a stuffing-box c5 to cause the air supplied through the passage c5 to pass through the passage a3 in the spindle,
so as to iniiate the pad secured to the lower end thereof. Y I
The pulleyag for the spindle is made as a part of a sleeve d4,which surrounds the spindle between the bearings b b2 and is secured to the spindle, so as to rotate the same and 6o also to prevent endwise movement thereof.
Below the lower bearing b' the spindle a is provided with a flange 0,5, (see Fig. 2,) which engages with a flange in a threaded clamping-,nut d, adapted to screw upon the upper end of a threaded sleeve e, provided at its lower end with a wide ilange e2, surmounted by a narrower flange e3 with an intervening groove or channel, said iianges serving to receive between them the upper wall f2 of the 7o hollow iiexible pad f and constituting a padholding foot. The nut d is fitted to the bearing b of the spindle, so as to aord a substantially dustproof joint between the rotating and non-rotating parts, said bearing being shown as provided with a sleeve-like projection entering a corresponding groove in the adjacent face of the nut, which rotates with the spindle when the bufng device is in operation. 8o
A clamping-plate g is supported upon the sleeve e, so as to be capable of moving up and down thereon, and is recessed in its lower portion, so as to receive within it the upper flange e3 of the pad-holding foot, while the 85 periphery of said clamping-disk g bears upon the edge of the abrasive cover h and upon the upper wall f2 of the pad f, so as to clamp the pad and abrasive cover between the said clamping disk g and the llange e2 of the 9o clamping-foot. The clamping-disk gis forced down to clamp the pad and abrasive-cover between it and the foot by means of a nut 7c, workingr upon the screw-thread of the sleeve. Thus the hollow iiexible pad,which is com- 9 5 monly made of molded india-rubber, may be fastened air-tight upon the end of the threaded sleeve e, which is itself secured to the hollow spindle a by the nut d engaging with the upper portion of the thread of said sleeve, which is provided with a longitudinal notch engaging with a piu a6 on the hollow spindle to secu re the sleeve against rotation upon the spindle.
The pad f is not Wholly impervious to the escape of air, so that the air is not, strictly speaking, confined therein, but fiows slowly therethrough, maintaining a suieient pressure to distend the pad and yieldingly support the abrasive cover h Without putting them under severe expansive strain.
Any suitable abrasive pad-cover may be used; but the pad-covers are preferably molded and provided with an inturned flange constructed to form a series of tongues Which are inserted between the clamping-disk g and the upper Wall of the pad, so that said clampingdisk serves both to clamp the abrasive cover on the pad and also to secure an air-tight connection between the pad and the sleeve through which the air for inflati-ng the pad is introduced.
I claim- The combination with the padactuating spindle; of a supporting-bracket provided with bearings therefor; a fiange on the spin-l dle; a screw-threaded sleeve surrounding the end of the spindle; and a nut coperating with said sleeve and said flange for fastening the said sleeve to said spindle; a anged foot carried by said sleeve; a clamping-disk cooperating with said fianged foot; and a nut for actuating the said disk working on the said threaded sleeve, substantially as described.
