To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, WILLIAM H. ROCHE, of Portland, in the county of Cumberland and State of Maine, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Heel and Sole Edge Securing Machines; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which forms a part of this specification, in which the figure is a sectional view of my improved heel and sole scouring machine.

This invention relates to a device for scouring the heels and soles of boots or shoes and more particularly soles and spring heels.

Its object is to provide a good bed for the emery cloth which will admit of its being very narrow and yielding and means for holding the bed and cloth firmly in position.

In said drawings a represents one of the jaws of a clamp adapted to be secured to a rotary shaft passing through a hole I) made therein, said jaw having a screw threaded projection c on one end. In the periphery of said jaw is an annular groove d, one side 6 being somewhat higher than the other side 0 f. A rubber ring g having an interior diameter about equal to-the diameter of said jaw at the bottom of said groove has drawn over it a circular piece of emery cloth h the smooth sides I; of which extend down around the sides of said ring. The ring is then forced into the groove in said jaw over the low side f. As it is forced on, the smooth side of the emery cloth is gathered and held closely between the bottom and high side of the groove and the ring. The other smooth edge of the emery cloth will extend down the side of the ring and the outside of the low side of the groove.

Adapted to be screwed onto the projection c isa clamping jawj having about the same height of the higher side of the groove in jaw a. As the clampingjaw is screwed on it gathers the other free edge of the emery cloth and holds it firmly between the ring and clamping jaw or between the clamping jaw and the outside of the lower side of the groove in jaw a according to the length of the sides of said emery cloth. The ring may be made hollow, it may be covered with a coating of leather Z to add firmness thereto, or it may be made circular in cross section instead of oval as shown in the drawing.

The advantages of my improved scouring machine are that it gives a firm and even surface for the emery cloth, that it can be easily put on and taken oif, that the cloth is firmly and readily secured to the ring and the ring and cloth both firmly secured in the groove in the jaw and that the emery cloth may thereby be made as narrow in cross section as desired.

To put the rubber ring and emery cloth in position you first place the ring inside the emery cloth and then placing it sidewise against the lower side of the groove force the ring over said lower side, the edge of the emery cloth on that side being caught and held between the opposite wall of the groove and said ring, said ring being stretched slightly to enable it to pass over the lower wall of the groove and then contracting so as to conform to and fit closely the bottom of said groove.

Having thus described my invention and its use, I claim- 1. In a machine for scouring heel and sole edges, the combination with a jaw having a groove in its periphery, one wall of which is higher than the other, a screw threaded projection on the side having the lower wall and a clamping jaw adapted to be screwed on said projection against said lower wall, of a hollow rubber ring seated in said groove and a circular covering having a narrow line of abrasive material, and free edges, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
