UNITED STATES PATENT OEEIcE.
ELMER E. DAVENPORT, OF DENVER, COLORADO.
CHAIR-PAD.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 720,788, dated February 1'7, 1903. Application filed October 28, 1902. Serial No. 129,099. (No model.) I
To all whom, 112? Duty concern:
Be it known that I, ELMEE E. DAVENPORT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Denver, in the county of Arapahoe and State of Colorado, have invented certain new and" useful Improvements in Chair-Pads, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to pads for the rockers of chairs, cribs, and hobby-horses; and the objects of the invention are to provide rockers with an elastic and extensible cushion extending the whole length of the rocker and over the ends thereof and secured thereto by the resilience of said extensible cushion acting upon the rocker independently of glue, cement, nails, or screws formerly used for that purpose. I attain these objects by the construction illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 isaside view of a rocker provided with a combined and integral rubber shoe and end pads constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal vertical section of a rocker provided with a bottom groove and end pockets adapted to receive and retain the combined rubber shoe and pads. Fig. 3 is a bottom view of the rocker, showing the groove and end pockets therein. Fig. 4 is a side view of the rubber shoe having pads or spherical heads on its ends integral therewith.
In said drawings, A represents a rocker having asuit-able curvature, and B the shoe, made of stretchable rubber, preferably of cylindrical form, and having formed on its ends balls b, integral with the shoe to constitute end pads for the rocker.
The rockerA is provided in its curved bottom with a groove (1 of substantially semicylindrical form; but adjacent to its two ends it is made slightly narrower and deeper at 2 to compress and clamp more closely the sides of the shoe B. At the outer end of the narrower neck portion 2 of each end of the groove itis made flaring and semispherical to constitute a pocket or cup 3 at right angles to the groove for the reception of the spherical heads b of the shoe. Said heads or balls are integral with the shoe and constitute pads to project from the ends of the rocker and prevent it' from scratching or defacing the washboard of a room or the furniture therein. The shoe B is molded of shorter length than the length of the rocker to which it is to be applied and is intended to be stretched before it is finallysecured to the rocker. The resilience of the shoe and the heads at each end are the only means used to retain it secured to the rocker; but the contracted neck portion 2 of the groove pinching the sides of the shoe acts as additional means to retain the shoe'secured to the rocker. As the shoe is much stretchable, the same shoe can be applied'to the rockers of various lengths.
Having now fully described my invention, I claim 1. The combination of a rocker having in its bottom a groove lengthwise thereof leading at its ends into pockets of larger size made into the ends of the rocker, with a shoe of extensible rubber having on its ends projecting heads integral therewith, said heads being seated in the end pockets of the rocker, substantially as described.
2. The combination of a rocker having in its under side a groove lengthwise thereof and reduced in width toward its ends, the reduced portions leading into pockets of larger size made into the ends of the rocker, with a shoe of resilient rubber having on its ends and integral therewith, projecting heads adapted to be received into and partly project from the pockets formed in the ends of the rocker, and be locked thereto by the resilience of the shoe acting upon the rocker, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses. ELMER E. DAVENPORT. Witnesses:
