TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CON CERN:
Be it known that I, R. W. MAcGoWAN, of the city, county, and State of New Yorl-r, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Printing-Pointersgand I do hereby declare that thefollowng is n. full, clear, and exact. description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of thisspecication.
This invention relates to anew and improved application of pointers to printing-presses for registering .the sheets of paper as they are fed'ito the press. Hithert-o these pointers have been operated automatically from the moving parts of the press, allowed to remain inan elevated or nearly upright position, and through the sheet, until thengers or nippers of the cylinder arrive in proper position to grasp the sheet, at which time the points are drawn down, and tne sheet released, so that itimay be conneetedwith the cylinder and rotated with the same'in order to receive the impression. i
My improvement consists in applying a spring, or an equivalent weight, to the pointers; the latter ,being pivotedat their lower ends, or attached to axes, and all constructed and arranged in suche. manner that the pointers willhold the sheets properly in position on the feed-board, and the nippers of the cylinder allowed to draw the sheet oii from the points, on' account of the latter yielding vor being allowed to 'be drawn down Iunder the slight pull of the sheet, the spring or weights throwing the points back to their original position as soon as, the sheet is withdrawn. By this arrangement all mechanism for operating the pointers is avoided, and a veryV simple and economical pointing or registering-device obtained. In the accompanying sheet of drawings- Figure 1 is a. plan or top view of'my invention; w
Figure 2 a verticalseetion of' the same, taken i'n the line x x, fig. 1.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
A represents ametnl tube, having n screw-thread, a, out on the lower part of its exterior, and provided with a cap-plate, b, at its top, which projects beyond the tube, being somewhat greater inv diameter, than the latter, as shown in fig. 2. The cap-plate b has an oblong slot, c, made in it, through which'a pointer, B, passes. This pointer, at its lower end, is fitted in a smull shaft, d, which is within the tube A, the ends ofthe shaft being allowed tp turn freely in the side of the tube. To the lower end of the pointer B, and side of the tube, rthere is attached a. spiral spring, e, and this'spring has n tendency to keep the pointerin an upright' position `or against the `huterend of' the slot c, as will bcfully understood liy referring to tig. 2. The tube A is fitted in a circular opening made-in the feed-board, shown in red, the cup-plate b fitting ilush" in `the upper surface of the feedboard, and the tube irmly secured in position by a nut, C, on its lower end. Any proper number of' these pointers may be fitted in the feed-boardg there should be two at least, one at euch side near itslinner end. The pointers are readily drawn over, as shown in blue.` ig. 2, under the' pull ot' the sheet, as thenippers grasp the latter, and allow the sheet to pass freely oii' fromthem, the springs e throwing the pointers back to penetrate a succeeding Ysheet as soon as the nippers draw 'the preceding sheet oif. Thus, by this simple means, all mechanism for operi ating the pointers is' avoided, .They are self-operating, and consequently will not be liable to get out of repair or become deranged by use. l
Iclaim as new, and desire tosecure by Letters Patent- 1. The pivot-ed or jointed pointer B, having a spring or equivalent weight attached, and arranged to operate in the manner substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. I further claim the tube A, provided with the slotted cap-plate b and the nut C, when used in connection with the pointer, for the purpose specified.
RW. MACGOWAN.
