Description

@citen gisten gatta-t @Hita GEORGE C. HALL, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK. Letters'Patcnt No. 72,032, datcdzlecember A10, 1,867.
IMPROVEMENT IN UOLLETING OXIDE 0F ZINC.
TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
B-e it known that I, GEORGE C. HALL, of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings, and State of New York, have invented a new and improved Means for Catching the Oxide oi' Zinc; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others' skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.
This invention relates to a new and improved meansfor catching the oxide of` zinc as it escapes with the fumes and gases from roasting or burning zinc ore.
Hitherto the oxide of zinc hasbeen caught and retained by forcing the fumes and gases from the roasting or burning ore into a large bag or receptacle composed of cotton'cloth or other porous material, which will admit of the gases and air passing through it, but notthe oxide, the latter being retained within the bag, and 'by its superior gravity falling to the bottom thereof, and settling in teats o'r pendent receptacl-esatthe bottom ot' the bag, from which itis removed from Atime to time.
The invention has for its object the dispensing of the large bag which is very expensive, the gases from the ore affecting thef same, so that it rots in a very short time, and soon .becomes ruptured under the blows which are given it to cause the oxide, which adheres '.to .the sides ofthe bag,to drop into the teats or receptacles made to receive it. Y
The invention consists in having the fumes andgases from the roasting or burning zinc or zinc ore forced into a close building provided with openings or apertures, over which screeneare placed, constructed iu such a manner, and of such materials, as to admit of the air and gases passing through them, but not the oxide, as hereinafter fully shown and described. l
p The accompanying drawing represents a side sectional view of my invention.
A representsa building or structure, which may be constructed oi' wood, stone, or-other material, and into which the fumes and gases from the roasting or burning ore are forced by means of a rotary fan, as hitherto, or by any proper means. This structure or building A-has openings, a, made in. it, any proper number, and at any suitable or desired parts. l These openings are covered by screens B of peculiar` construction, as follows: lwo pieces, atX ax, of wire netting or other suitable material are attached to a rectangular frame, b, one at each side thereof, the frame I1 being suiiciently thick to admit of a space being allowed Vbetween the two screens to receive ground cork, horse-hair, wool, or other material, c, which will admit of air passing through it, but which will preventt-he oxide passing through. These screens B are fitted in grooved or rebated bars d, attached to lthe upper and lower edges of the openings a at the outer side of the building, and` between which the frames b are allowed to slide freely to admit of the screens being readily applied to and detached from the openings a.
,As the fumes and gases from the roasting orA burning zinc or zinc ore are forced into'the building A, the zinc vapor, owing to its strong aiinity for oxygen is immediately oxidized, and the oxide falls or drops to the bottom of the building, while the gases or other vapors are driven by means of the fam or blower through4 the screens B, which will not admit oi' the oxide passing through them. In casethe screens become choked or j clogged up, they may be readily removed from the openings a, and others put in their place while they are being cleaned. It will be seen of course that the building A will last an indefinite period of time, and that the screens B are very durable, and capable of being cleaned with facility whenever required. The building A, also, may be small compared with the large bags now employed for the purpose, and which, as previously stated, last but a short time, and are very expensive. i i
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A building, structure, or compartment, A, provided/with openings, a, ciovered by screens, B, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. Ascreen for separating the oxide of zinc fromthe fumes and gases of burning zinc ore, composed of ground cork, hair, wool, sponge, or other suitable or similar material, conned\\vithin a suitable chamber, substantially as set forth. r
