COLLAR-BUTTON.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 719,828, dated February 3, 1903.

Be it known that I, BEN B. MAYER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Collar-Buttons, (Case No. 1,) of which the following is a full, clear, concise, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings,formin g a part of .this specification.

My invention relates to collar-buttons, and has for its object the provision of a cushion, back for the base of the button that comes in contact with the flesh of the wearer, my invention relating more particularly to those collar-buttons that are worn at the back of the neck. 7 r

In accordance with my invention I construct the collar-button with a recessed baseplate, cushion material being contained within the recess, while the peripheral edge of the base-plate is folded to form an inwardly-projecting annular flange that grips the cushion and securesit in place. I preferably employ some yielding material, as thick woolen cloth or fiber, for the cushion,which is held in place by means of a suitable covering, formed, preferably, of kid, the cushion being preferably backed by a metallic disk, which is also inclosed by the kid covering, the edges of the covering being preferably gathered and glued to a disk of paper, the cushion thus formed being inserted within the recess in the baseplate of the button, the marginal edges whereof are then turned over by means of a suitable former to clamp the cushion.

I will explain my invention more fully by reference to the accompanyingdrawings,illustrating the preferred embodiment thereof, in which-- Figure 1 is an elevation of one form of button constructed in accordance with myinvention. Fig. 2 is a sectional view of a partiallyconstructed cushion-pad arranged in accord ance with my invention. Fig. 3 illustrates a cushion-pad whose covering has its edge gath-' ered and secured. Fig. 4 is a plan view of the cushion illustrated in Fig. 3. Fig. 5 is a sectional view showing the cushion as illustrated in Fig. 3 inserted within the recess of the base-plate of the button, and Fig. 6 is a sectional view illustrating the complete button.

Like parts are indicated by similar characters of reference throughout the different figures.

I have shown one particular type of collarbutton; but it is obvious that the invention may be employed in connection with many different styles of buttons, and I do not, therefore, wish to be limited to the precise form of button shown.

The base-plate or portion a of the collarbutton is preferably recessed, the button being preferably made of sheet metal this recess being sufficiently deep to contain the cushion that is inserted within the same. The

cushion is preferably formed in part of a filler 1), formed of suitable material, thick woolen cloth or felt answering the purpose satisfactorily. In constructing the button the filler is inclosed by a covering 0, formed, preferably, of kid, a disk 07., preferably of metal, being also inclosed by the covering, which is then gathered, as illustrated in Fig. 4, a lining c, of paper or other -suitable material, being interposed between the disk and the gathered edges of the covering, which are glued or pasted to the paper lining. The completed cushion, as shown in Fig. 3, is then inserted within the recess in the base of the collar-button, the edge of the base being then crimped to form an inwardlyprojecting annular flange, as indicated in Fig. 6.

The function of the plate d is apparent. It acts as a solid back for the cushion that coacts with the clamping-flange to secure the cushion in place, the peripheral edge of the cushion being clamped between the clamping-flange and the rigid back of the cushion. By gathering the covering of the cushion and securing the gathered portions thereof the covering is prevented from working loose.

I have thus provided a very simple form of collar-button presenting a cushioned back to the neck of the wearer, the construction being such that the normal appearance ofcollarbuttons as at present constructed is not materially departed from, while the superior advantage of a soft back is at the same time secured.

I have herein shown the preferred embodiment of my invention in connection with a collar-button provided with a recessed base portion; but I do not wish to be limited in all embodiments of my invention to this particular construction, nor do I wish to be limited to the precise way in which the pad provided with a rigid back is secured in place upon the shank of the button.

While I have shown the clamping-flange upon the base of the button as being continuous and non-serrated, I do not wish to be limited in the claims to this particular feature of construction; but,

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. Asa new article of manufacture, acollarbutton recessed at its base portion and con-' taining a cushion comprising a filler and a covering therefor, a rigid back for the filler, the edge of the base portion of the button being provided with an inwardly-extending clamping-flange, the covering for the filler being interposed at its edge portions between the base, portion of the collar-button and the said rigid back, the said clamping-flange serving to secure the cushion with its rigid back in the base of the collar-button, substantially as described.

2. As a new article of manufacture, a collarbutton recessed at its base portion and containing a cushion comprising a filler and a covering therefor, a rigid back for the filler, the edge of the base portion of the button being provided with an inwardlyextending clam pin g-flange, the covering for the filler being interposed at its edge portions between the base portion of the collar-button and the said rigid back, the said clamping-flange serving to secure the cushion with its rigid back in the base of the collar-button, and a lining interposed between the edge of the covering which is gathered and the said rigid back, the gathered edge being secured to the said lining, as by paste, substantially as described.
