Description
PATENTED FEB. 3, 1903. K. v. PAINTER.
BALL.
APPLICATION FILED 00113, 1902.
H0 MODEL.
WITNESSES INVE 0R 4 i I Attorney UNITED STATES PATENT ()FFICE.
KENYON V. PAINTER, OF CLEVELAND, OHIO.
BALL.
PECIZEICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 719,498, dated February 3, 1903.
Application filed October 13,1902. Serial No. 127,054. (No model.)
T 0 all whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, KENYON V. PAINTER, a resident of Cleveland, in the county of Guyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Balls; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to an improvement in balls, and more particularly to golf-balls and the like, the object of the invention being to provide a ball composed partially of paper, which may constitute an outside covering and part of the interior construction thereof and may be employed in various ways to produce a decided improvement in balls of this character for golf, base-ball, or a great variety of other uses.
I/Vith this object in view the invention con sists in certain novel features of construction and combinations and arrangements of parts, as will be more fully hereinafter described, and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figures 1, 2, and 3 are views in section, illustrating three embodiments of my invention.
In Fig. 1, 1 represents a hollow spherical core of paper, 2 an elastic covering around the same, which may be elastic bands wound under tension or other elastic composition, and 3 represents an outer covering or shell of paper.
In Fig. 2 the construction is like Fig. 1, except that the central core is filled with an elastic or other material.
In Fig. 3 an interposed layer or shell 5 of paper is provided between two sections of elastic covering or shell.
The use of paper in the construction of balls is a decided improvement over anything heretofore known, especially the employment of the same as an outer shell or covering.
It is desirable in golf-balls and the like to' so construct them as to provide the greatest resiliency when struck a hard blow and at the same time be not too lively in light play, as approaching and putting. The paper covering and its use as intermediate layers or shells assures this requirement to a higher degree than any substance now in use, for being very hard and yet thin enough not to destroy the elasticity that the interior of the ball produces. The results are produced that the ball will go to a great distance when struck a hard blow, and at the same time, owing to the inelasticity of the paper, itapproaches nearer to a solid gutta-peroha ball when under light strokes in both its approaching'and putting than any other known. The outside covering or shell of paper has the additional advantage of an almost indestructible covering and of the desired white color. The object, therefore, of my invention is to provide a ball of a high degree of efficiency at a comparatively low cost.
A great many other changes might be made in the genaral form andarrangement of parts without departing from my invention, and hence I do not confine myself to the precise constructions set forth, but consider myself at liberty to make such slight changes and alterations as fairly fall within the spirit and scope of my invention;
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A ball comprising an inner shell of paper, an outer shell or covering of paper, and an interposed body of elastic material.
2. A ball comprising an inner shell of paper, elastic material within the inner shell, an outer shell or covering of paper, and an interposed body of elastic material.
3. A ball comprising an inner body of elastic material and a thin outer shell or covering of paper constituting the outer covering and surface of the hall and serving to retain the elastic core under compression, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
KENYON V. PAINTER.
