PATENT OFFICE.
JOSEPH A. MANAHAN, OF NEW YORK. N. Y., ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF T SEYMOUR BOOKMAN, OF NEWV YORK, N. Y. 5
BALL.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 765,145, dated July 12, 1904-.
Application filed January 6, 1904.
.To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOSEPH A. MANAHAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York city, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Balls, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a ball adapted for golf and other games; and the invention resides in certain features of construction adapted to give the ball an accurate form and also to impart life or elasticity, so as to insure an effective bound.
This invention is set forth in the following specification and claims, and illustrated in the annexed drawings, in Which Figure 1 shows the ball partly sectioned. Fig. 2 shows the sphere or core in section. Fig. 3 shows the sphere or core unsectioned. Fig. A shows the winding. Fig. 5 shows the shellac coat and the adhesive layer of the ball. Fig. 6 shows netting.
The center or core of the ball consists of a sphere a with pneumatic plungers 5. When the ball is struck and a plunger is forced inward, the air in the sphere or plunger-seats is compressed and tending to force the plunger outward a bounce or far-reaching impulse is given to the ball. About this center sphere a is wound elastic or rubber thread or tape 0. About the winding cis applied a coat of shel- Serial No. 187,941. (No model.)
lac d. A coat of adhesive e is applied about the shellac.
The cover f of the ball is formed by balata. The balata is shown with a netting of suitable material (indicated at g) and embedded therein. This netting or knitting serves to strengthen the balata cover or give durability thereto.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. An elastic spherical body having a plurality of inclosed channels communicating with each other at their inner ends, and plungers operating in said channels.
2. A ball comprising a core provided with channels, an elastic covering for the core, and plungers operating in said channels and adapted to engage said elastic covering.
3. A ball comprising a core having a plurality of channels communicating at their inner ends with each other, an elastic covering for the core, and plungers operating in said channels and adapted to engage said elastic covering.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
JOSEPH A. MAN AHAN.
