To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, TEERON CLARK CRAW- FoRD,a citizen of the United States of America, residing at 17 Stratton street, Mayfair, London, England, have invented new and useful Improvements in Golf-Balls, of which the following is a specication.
This invention relates to the manufacture of golf-balls, and is designed to impart to such balls greater resilience than they possess when composed of solid gutta-percha, while providing against their becoming distorted in form.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure lis a sectional view of a hall constructed according to my improved method, and Fig. 2 a detail view of the cellular covering therein.
My improved ball comprises a spherical core a, composed of any suitable material-such as hard rubber, wood, or metal-Which is enveloped in a covering of a cellular character and composed of gutta-percha or similar stili material. The Celluloid recesses or cells c in the covering Z) may be hexagonal in shape, as shown in Fig. 2, or these cells may be of varions other formations. About the covering b is arranged a covering d, of comparatively soft india-rubber, the latter being supported by the walls of the cells c, but not entering the cells to Asuch adepth as to occupy them to any great extent. The indiarubbercovered structure is then inclosed within a stout envelop e,'of gutta-percha.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, s- A A golf-ball comprising a solid core inclosed Within a covering composed of stii material and formed as to its outer surface with numerous cells., a covering composed of yielding material surrounding the said cellular covering, and an outer casing composed of wearresisting material.
