SMOOTHING APPARATUS FOR SILK HATS.l
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. I719,001, dated January 27, 1903.
Application filed April 12, 1901.
To all whom 7215 72mg/ concern:
Be it known that I, OSCAR HAMMERSTEIN, a citizen of the United States, residing in the borough of hlanhattaiucity, county, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Smoothing Apparatus for Silk Hats, of which the following is a specification.
Myinvention relates to smoothing apparatus for silk hats, and has for its object to produce an apparatus which will be very effective for smoothing a silk hat and which will give an effect as good as or superior to the effect of a habil-on without incurring the danger of scorching the hat.
To these ends myinvention consists in the special matters hereinafter claimed when construed with reference to this specification of the invention and the prior art.
In the accompanying drawings I have shown in detail two forms of apparatus in which my invention is embodied.
In the drawings, Figure I is a side view of one form of apparatus embodying myin vention. Fig. 2 is an end view thereof. Fig. 3 is a section on line 3 3 ot` Fig. l on an enlarged scale. Fg. 4 is a section on line 4 4 of Fig. 3. Fig. 5 is a detail View of the stiffener or plate, and Fig. 6 is a sectional view of another form of apparatus embodying my invention.
In the drawings, referring particularly to Figs. l to 5, inclusive, l indicates a exible rubber envelop adapted to contain hot water and preferably of a general cigar shape. This envelop is closed by a stopper 2, preferably a screw-stopper, as shown in detail in Fig. 4. The envelop is of a yielding character on its face and is provided at its rear with aps 3 and 4, which in the form of device shown in Figs. 1 to 5 together constitute a pocket or recess for the reception of a stiff backing plate or frame 5. This plate or frame gives rigidity to the flexible envelop and causes it to maintain its form in use. In Figs. l to 4 the plate is shown as connected to legs or standards 6 6, which are joined by a handle 7. In Fig. 1 the device is shown as resting on a surface, and when in this position the Serial No. 55,440. (No model.)
hat is pressed against it andturned; but the device may be grasped by the handle 7 and rubbed over the hat.
In Fig. (i I have shown a form of my device designed to be employed as a hand instrument. In this figure, a indicates the flexible envelop closed by the stopper o?. The front face of this envelop is flexible and yielding, While the rear portion is provided With a pocket a3, which receives the stiff shank or plate d5, to which the handle a7 is attached.
The operation of the device is as follows: Vhen it is desired to smooth a silk hat or 'analogous surface, the flexible envelop is filled with boiling-hot water and the stopper inserted and firmly screwed down into place. Any7 surplus Water is wiped off the surface of the envelop, and the hat may now be rubbed with the envelop, which will impart to the said hat a highly-brilliant gloss. This gloss I have found to be superior to the gloss im parted by the ordinary hat-iron in that it is a more brilliant gloss and is much more lasting, while at the same time the injurious effects of the hot iron are provided against.
, Having described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s-
1. A smoothing device consisting of' a flexible body of Waterproof material provided with a handle.
2. A smoothing device consisting of a flexible body, the operating-surface of which is con vexed longitudinally and transversely, and which is pointed at its forward end.
3. A smoothing device, consisting of a flexible body, Which has a round point at its forward end, and a longitudinally-convexed operating-surface.
4. A smoothing device consisting of a flexible body provided at one side with fiaps so as to form a double layer, and a stiffener contained in the space or pocket between the two layers.
OSCAR HAMMERSTEIN.
