HERBERT J. BROWNE, OF WASHINGTON, DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-FOURTH TO JOHN L. STEELE, OF \VASHINGTON, DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA.
INDEX-LEAF FOR BOOKS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 718,816, dated January 20, 1903.
' Application filed November 7,1901. Serial No. 81.363. N model.)
To aZZ whom it may concerw Beit known that I, HERBERT J. BROWNE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Washington, District of Columbia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Index-Leaves for Books; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains do to make and use the same.
the essential cataloguing subject-matter and I each bearing a different prominent feature relating to the publicationsuch as name of author, title; place and date of publication, and one or more of the prominent subjects treated-for insertion in a card-catalogue of a library.
Heretofore the owners or officers of libraries have been compelled to print or write the necessary index-cards for each book or publication entered, involving troublesome delay and much expense for each library in order to prepare suitable card catalogues or in- 5 dexes.
In carrying out my invention each book or copy of a publication is provided with a leaf or leaves, of any desired thickness, containing in separate sections the cataloguing mattersuch as name of author, title, subtitle, prominent subject or subjects treated, name of publisher, place and date of publication, series, size, number of pages, 850., pertaining to the book, and two or more of said sections having different cataloguing features of the subject-matter made prominent-whereby each section may be readily detached and used as an index-card or pasted on or otherwise applied to a card. The expense to the publisher for such leaf or leaves containing sections of cataloguing matter in each book would be trifling, while a great benefit would be conferred upon the library by facilitating the immediate preparation of such cards. No book now published contains, properly grouped and arranged, the cataloguing matter in a single compact section or otherwise in form suitable for detachment. By my improvement this desirable matter is provided in one or more groups or sections, one or more havinga distinctive cataloguing feature made prominent for a separate card. Any desired number of groups or sections of the cataloguing matter,in duplicate or otherwise, may be printed on one or more leaves and bound with the other leaves of the book, orattached thereto, or inserted in any convenient manner.
The matter constituting my invention will be defined in the claims.
I will now describethe details of my invention by reference to the accompanying drawing, which represents a plan view of an open book, showing a leaf with printed groups or sections of cataloguing matter.
My improvement is represented for the purpose of illustration as applied to a book with the usual binding sides A and back A, which in close and protect my cataloguing-leaf B in connection with the ordinary leaves B of the book. The cataloguing-leaf Bis preferably divided by the transverse lines a and the vertical line a into spaces which may be styled section-spaces. The lines a, a may be simply printed lines or they may be lines of broken indentations or perforations for convenience in detaching the sections of cataloguing matter. These lines may, however, be omitted, as my invention is not confined thereto. Frequently a three-card cataloguing system is used for books in a library, and for the purpose of illustration I have shown three groups or sections b c d of cataloguing matter on the leaf B. In each group or section there is printed in concise compact form the cata- 9 loguingmatter, such as name of the author, title of the book, a descriptive subtitle, the publisher, place and date of publication, and other brief descriptive matter or abbreviations relating to the book. In the illustration each section contains as a prominent feature some one part of the cataloguing matter. For instance, the section 1) contains at the top, as the prominent feature, 6, the name of the author, \Villis Henry Parker, in heavy black letters. The section 0 contains at the top the title f, underscored, of the book, Latin Monetary Union, a History of the. The section (1 contains at the top, as the prominent cataloguing feature, the name or title 9, underscored, of some prominent or leading subject treated in the book, as Bilnetallism. Other sections of cataloguing matter may be printed having at the top other names of prominent subjects or branches of subjects treated in the book. For instance, a section might be printed containing at the top the subtitle, Currency Question, and another section having printed at the top the subtitle, Silver Question.
Though I have described that any special cataloguing feature, such as a name or title, could be made prominent by printing it at the top of the card, I do not wish to be confined to that arrangement and manner of making the special cataloguing feature prominent in each section. The special cataloguing feature may be made prominent by printing it in a difierent-colored ink, such as red or blue, in each section, or such cataloguing features maybe underscored or printed in italics or any other special type by which it would be made distinctive and given special prominence for the purpose of card-cataloguing. Certain sections, as b, may be printed in duplicate, leaving for each library the completion of the card by the addition of a subjectmatter heading or other heading conformable to the plan and usage of such particular library, as likewise will be the case in other features peculiar to each library and not general to all libraries, such as the shelf-numbers, the.
It is not necessary that the diiferent sections of cataloguing matter be separated by printed or other lines, though they should be separated by suitable spaces, as in the drawing, for permitting each section to be readily cut out or otherwise detached and used as a card or pasted on or otherwise applied to a card. I do not wish to be confined to a number of sections of cataloguing matter printed on any one leaf of the book.
The sections of cataloguing matter may be printed on leaves like or similar to the other leaves of the book or upon leaves of thicker paper, so that each section when detached may be used directly as a cataloguing-card.
Having described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent,
1. A book or other publication having leaves containing compact and separated groups or sections of cataloguing matter 'comprising name of author, title of the publication, a subtitle, name of publisher, place and date of publication, repeated in each group, and, in addition, a different part of said matter made prominent or distinctive in each group or section for making card-indexes, substantially as described.
2. A book or other publication having leaves containing compact and separated groups or sections of cataloguing matter comprising name of author, title of the publication, a subtitle, name of publisher, place and date of publication, repeated in each group, and in addition, the title or a subtitle made prominent by location at the top of each group or section, for preparing card-indexes pertaining to the publication, substantially as described. I
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
