JAMES HODGENS, OF SAVANNAH, MISSOURI.
GATE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 718,626, dated January 20, 1903.
Application filed July 8, 1902. Serial No. 114,821- (No model.)
To 00 whom. it ,mrty concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES HODGENs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Savannah, in the county of Andrew and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and use ful Improvements in Gates; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in sliding gates in which provision is made for opening and closing the same and also operating the catch thereof by means of ropes fastened to the gates and so positioned that the gates maybe opened or closed from opposite sides by the operators simply pulling on one or the other of the ropes or actuating reel mechanism upon which the ropes for operating the gates are wound.
The invention consists in various details of construction and combinations of parts, as will be hereinafter more fully described and then defined in the appended claim.
The invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings, which, with the letters of reference marked thereon, form a part of this application, and in which drawings similar letters of reference indicate like parts in the several views, in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation showing my improved sliding gate and means for opening and closing the same. Fig. 2 is a top plan view. Fig. 3 is a sectional view taken on line 3 3 of Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a diagrammatic view showing the arrangement of the ropes and the pulleys without reference to their connections to supporting means.
Reference now being had to the details of the drawings by letter, A A designate standards connected together at their tops by a cross-piece J.
B B designate two posts, and O horizontally-disposed strips which are connected to the posts B B and standards A A and form tracks for the pulleys F, carried by the gates to ride upon. Each gate, which is of ordinary construction and designated by letters 1) and D, has its upper strip extended, as
indicated by letter D, and E E designate upright strips which are arranged in pairs on opposite sides of the strips D, and between said upright strips are journaled the pulleys F, which travel upon the tracks 0. Pivoted on one of the gates is a latch H, which is notched at its inner free end and adapted to engage a pin G upon the opposite gate when the gates are closed, thereby locking the same in such position.
Mounted between the parallel strips K, K, and K supported from the standards A, are the pulleys L and L at the lower end thereof, and at the upper ends are pivotally mounted'the pulleys M and M, there being two sets of pulleys of similar construction mounted between each set of strips K, K, and K at each upright standard A. Mounted upon an arm R are the pulleys R, R R and R carried on the pins B and separated by means of a plate B Upon the under portion of the cross-piece J is mounted a loop or eye J,
through which the cords N and 0 pass and are supported at a convenient distance above the gates. (See Fig. 4.)
N designates a cord which is fastened at one end I to the rear of the right-hand gate, passes under the right-hand pulley L, thence over the right-hand pulley M, thence about pulley R, and is wound about a pulley or drum 'D to which isconnected an operating-handle D and which is suitably mounted on one of said posts B. (Shown clearly in Fig. l of the drawings.) The cord or rope N is fastened to the cord or rope N,'passes over right-hand pulley M, thence through the eye J, over a left-hand pulley M on the opposite standard, thence down underneatha left-hand pulley L, and is fastened to a pin Q at the rear end of the left-hand gate. By this connection of cords it will be observed that when the operator turns the drum D upon which the cord N winds, by reason of the cord N being fastened to the cord N the gates will be drawn together or toward each other. The
cord 0 is fastened at one end to the free end of the latch H, carried by the outer end of the right-hand gate, passed underneath the right-hand pulley L, thence over the righthand pulley M, passed about the pulley R and is wound about a'pulley D which is mounted on the upright D and has an operating-handle D whereby the rope may be wound upon the drumfor the purpose of drawing the gates apart. The rope O has secured thereto the rope or cord 0', which passes through the eye J, thence over the left-hand pulley M, underneath the left-hand pulley L, and is fastened, as at O to the upper inner end of the opposite left-hand gate, Whereby when the operator pulls upon the rope O the latch is raised from engagement with the pin G and the gates are drawn apart.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
In combination with the two horizontallysliding gates D and D a frame supporting the same, the cord 0' secured to the inner end of gate D, pulleys supported by the frame and over which said cord is passed, a reel D about which the cord is wound, a second cord N fastened to the outer end of the gate D and passing over suitable pulleys, a reel D about which said cord N passes, a reel D about which said cord N is wound, a horizontally-disposed pivotal gravity gate-latch, a cord 0 secured to its free end and passing over pulleys, and about said reel D", a cord N fastened to the outer end of the gate D passing over suitable pulleys and Winding about said reel D all substantially as shown and described.
In testimony whereof I hereunto affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JAMES HODGENS.
