ANDREI/V W. GRAHAM, OF BRADFORD, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE- HALF TO IVALT'ER D. GODFREY, OF BRADFORD, PENNSYLVANIA.
SURGICAL SPLINT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 718,339, dated January 13, 1903. Application filed April 22, 1902. Serial No. 104,208. (No model.)
To ctZZ whom. it 7771607.]0072067711.
Be it known that I, ANDREW W. GRAHAM, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bradford, in the county of McKean and State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and usefulImprovements in Surgical Splints,of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in surgical splints, and pertains more particuzo larly to hinged splints.
The object of my invention is to provide a splint which is adapted to fold from the center, and by so arranging the arms upon which the said members of the splint proper are :5 carried the splint is adapted to open and close exactly as a human-joint.
Another object of my invention is to provide a splint that is rigidly held in the adjusted position and cannot be moved without a key or device adapted for that purpose.
A still further object of my invention is to provide a cheap, simple, and effective splint to accomplish the above results.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a top plan view. Fig. 2 is a bottom plan view. Fig. 3 is a side view, partly broken away. Fig. 4 is a sectional View taken on line so a; of Fig. 8. Fig. 5 is a sectional view on line y 'y of Fig. 3.
Referring now to the drawings, A A represent the two sections of my splint, which are preferably provided with the concaved surfaces a a, adapted to fit the curvature of the arm or leg to which it is applied. As
clearly shown, the said sections are spaced apart, and one section is adapted to be applied above and the other below the fractured joint. The edges of said section A have embedded therein and secured, by means of screws, rivets, or other suitable fastenings, the upwardly-curved arms B and B, while the section A has secured thereto in a like manner the arms 0 and C, and the upper ends of said arms are provided with offsets c 5 and 0, While the arms B and B are provided arm B, and is provided at its outer end with an opening 6, and swiveled within said openin g is a laterally-extending eye F,Which is provided with a vertical screw-threaded opening f. The arm C is also provided with an opening G directly below the eye F, and swiveled therein is a laterally-extending eye H, provided with the vertical opening 72., and said opening is screw-threaded'in the opposite direction to that of the eye F. Passing through said eyes is a screw-threaded member I, which has its upper end J screw-threaded in one direction and its lower end J screw-threaded in the opposite direction. said screw-threaded portion is provided with I a squared portion K, which is adapted to enter a key or instrument adapted for that purpose. By turning the said screw-threaded rod the eyes through which it passes are thus drawn together or forced apart, and thus throw the two sections of the splint at different angles or throw them in a straight line. The eyes being pivotally mounted in the arms,
it will be readily seen that when the screwthreaded bar is turned and the arms drawn together the said eyes will turn, and thus prevent the springing of the bar or breaking .of the threads carried thereby.
Having thus described rnyinvention, What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. A surgical splint, comprising two mem' bers pivoted together, movable eyes carried by said members, and ascrew-threaded memher passing through said eyes, substantially as described. l
2. A surgical splint comprising two members, oppositely-extending arms carried by said members and pivoted together, an ex- 0 tended member carried by one of said arms, and an adjustable connection between said extended member and the opposite member substantially as described.
3. A surgical splint comprising two mem- 5 bers, armscarried by said members and pivoted together, a movable eye carried'by one of said arms beyond its pivotal connection, a second movable eye carried by the arm carried by the opposite member, and a rod passing through said eyes and having its ends oppositely screw-threaded.
The outer end of the 65 I 6. A surgical splint comprising two members, upwardly-extending arms carried by said members and pivoted together, swiveled eyes carried by said members, and a rod having oppositely-screw-threaded ends passing through said eyes, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
ANDREW W. GRAHAM.
