SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 717,877, dated January 6, 1903.
Application filed June 27,1902- Serial No. 113,531- (No model.) i
To all whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, TORE GUSTAF EMANUEL LINDMARK, a subject of the King of Sweden and Norway, residing at Stockholm, Sweden, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Pumps, of which the following is a specification.
In Letters Patent No.706,187, granted to me August 5, 1902, I have described and broadly claimed the combination ofa steam-turbine,
a pump actuated thereby, and means for continuously supplying feed under pressure to said pump, the said parts being constructed and arranged so that the said pump normally, actuated by the said turbine at a speed too great to enable it through its own suction to raise liquid to a given height is enabled to do so by the supply of feed under pressure. In the specific embodiment illustrating my said invention in the aforesaid application I have shown a steam'turbine, a rotary pump having its Wheel on the shaft thereof, a second pump constructed and arranged continuously to deliver feed to said first-named pump.
In my present invention in lieu of a steamturbine actuating the high-speed pump and carrying the pump-wheel on its shaft 1 employ any motor capable of rotating said shaft and by means of interposed gearing between said shaft and the said high-speed pump impart to the latter the requisite velocity. Preferably I arrange the low-speed pump or other means for supplying to the high-speed pump feed under pressure upon the shaft of the motor, and preferably this motor is electric. It will therefore be seen that while in the invention described in my aforesaid application the high-speed pump is preferably on the shaft of a suitably'fast running turbine and the low-speed pump is actuated by speed-reducing gearing from said shaft in my present invention the low-speed pump is preferably on the shaft of a suitablyslow running electric motor and the high-speed pump is actuated by speed-increasing gearing from said shaft.
An embodiment of my present invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, which is a plan view.
In said drawing, 1 representsan electric motor which is journaled in the bearings 2 and 3, supported on the bed-plate l, and between said bearings carries on its shaft 17 the large gears 5 and 6. Gears 5 and 6 engage with the smaller pinions 7 8, which are on a shaft 9, supported in bearings 10 11 on said bed-plate 4.
12 is the fast-running centrifugal pump, which may be of any suitable construction, the wheel of which is mounted on the shaft 13, which may be detachably secured to shaft 9 by any suitable coupling, as 14:.
15 is another centrifugal pump much larger than the centrifugal pump 12 and having its wheel supported on shaft 16. Shaft 16 is connected by any suitable coupling, as 21, to motor-shaft 17. The size of the pump 15 with respect to the pump 12 is to be such that the larger pump 15 will draw up and deliver to the pump 12 a sufficient quantity of water under the necessary pressure to enable said pump 12 to accomplish the desired result. For this purpose the pressure-chamber 18 of the pump 15 is connected by the pipe 19 (dotted lines) to the suction-chamber 20 of the pump 12.
It will be obvious from the foregoing construction, first, that the smaller centrifugal pump 12 is by reason of the gears 5, 6, 7, and 8 actuated at a speed very much greater than that of the electric motor, while the large pump 15, being on the motor-shaft, is driven at the same speed. This last speed is to be such as to enable the pump15 rapidly to perform its function of sucking up the water to deliver the same to the smaller pump 12. The Water passes through the pumps and pipe 19 in the direction of the arrows.
I claim 1. The combination of a motor, a rotary pump, mechanism interposed between said pump and motor whereby the speed of said pump is increased above that of said motor, and means for continuously supplying feed to said pump at slower velocity and larger.
volume than the fluid delivered thereby, substantially as described.
2. The combination ofa rotary motor, a 1'0- tary pump, gearing interposed between said pump and said motor whereby the speed of rotation of said pump is increased above the speed of rotation of said motor and means for continuously supplying feed to said pump ICO at slower velocity and larger volume than the fluid delivered thereby, substantially as described.
3. The combination of a rotary motor, a rotary pump having its wheel on the shaft of said motor, a second pump, speed-increasing gearing between said motor-shaft and the wheel of said second pump and a conduit connecting said pumps; whereby said first pum p delivers feed under pressure to said second pump, substantially as described.
4. The combination of a rotary motor, a rotary pump having its wheel on the shaft of said motor, a gear on said shaft, a second rotary pump, a gear on the shaft of said second pumpengagingwithsaid first-named gearand a conduit connecting said pumps; the said first pump being arranged to deliver feed under pressure through said conduit to said second pump and the said gearing being constructed to actuate the shaft of said second pump at a-speed greater than that of the shaft of said first pump, substantially as described.
5. The combination of the electric motor 1, pump 15 havingits wheel on the shaft of said motor, a gear 5 on said shaft, pump 12, gear 7 on the shaft of said pump 12, said gear 5 being of larger diameter than and engaging with said gear 7-and conduit 19 connecting said pumps, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
TORE GUSTAF EMANUEL LINDMARK.
