Description

i i Letters Patent No. 71,786, dated .December 3, 1867.
IMPROVEMENT IN ROTARY PUMPS.
die Stimuli nimh tu in tipa ettus ttmt mit mating met nf tin same.
IO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONGERN: p
Bc it known that I, JOHN PoPPE, of Green Point, in the county of Kings, and State of New York, have invented a new and'i mproved Rotary Pump; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable those skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference beingl had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.
Figure 1 is a side view of my improved pump.
Figure 2 is a vertical longitudinal section of the same, looking to the left.
Figure 3 is the same section as iig. 2, looking to the right.
Figure 4 is a detail sectional view of the same, taken through the line a: x, fig. 1.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
My invention has for its object to furnish an improved rotary pump, designed especially for use on shiphoard, but equally applicable for use in other places, and which shall be simple in construction, effective in operation, nndnot liable to get'out of order; and it consists in the construction, combination, and arrangement of the various parts, as hereinafter more fully descgibed.
A is the outer case of the pump, which consists of two flanged plates, a and a, circular in their general form, and securely* bolted to each other, as shown in vfig. 1, the seam or joint being made air and water-tight by the interposition of packing, as shown in fig. 4. B is a ring-shaped wheel, having teeth formed upon its inner or concave side, and having a ilange or rib formed upon its outer or convex side, which passes between the flanges C formed upon `the inner sides of the plates al anda2 of the case A. The ilanges C. are made with a circular groove in their faces to receive the packing, to prevent the water from passing in around the wheel B, as shown in iig. 4. D are flanges cast upon the side plates a and a, and occupying the space between the wheels B and E, through which anges bolts are passed to sustain the central` parts of the said plates a,l and a, and the seam or joint between which is packed to still further guard against the passa-ge of water. E is a small gear-wheel, the teeth of which mesh 'into the teeth of the gear-wheel B, as shown in figs.' 2 and 4. The gear-wheel E is attached to the shaft F, which passes in through the plates al and a* of the case A, and to the outer end or ends of which theV power is applied to' operate the pump. The outer sides of the flanges C, and the inner sides of the outer flanges that form the edges ofthe plates al and a2 of the Vcase A, are so formed as to form a circular tubular channel, G, for the passage of the. water through the pump. H is a piston-head, which exactly fits into the tubular channel G, and which is securely attached` to the wheel B, as shown in iig. 2. The water enters the pump through an opening, I, in the upper part of the pump, with which opening the ingress-pipe .I is connected. The pipe .I is provided with a valve, K, at a little distance from the opening I, to prevent the back ow of the water. An opening should hc made through the side of theingress-pipe J, so that the vvalve K may be removed when desired for adjustment and repair. Iris a valvcplate, which closes the channel G between the egress-opening W and the ingress-opening I, to guide the water into the discharge-i chamber M, from which it passes out through the discharge-pipe N. The valve-stem O of the valve-plate-L passes up through the top of the pump, and its upper end is connected to the sliding or lifting-bar P, by the horizontal bar R, as shown in figs. 1 and 4. The bnr P slides up and down vertically upon guides attached to a vertical post or support, S,as it is operated by the projection or cam X, acting upon an inclined shoulder, p',
` formed upon thc side of the lifting or sliding-bar P, so as to raise the valve L at the proper time to allow-the piston-head H to, pass. One of the journals of the gear-wheel T revolves in bearings in the framework U, and the other journal revolvsinfbearings in the post or support S. The teeth of the gear-wheel T mesh into the -vteeth ot' the gear-wheelV lattached to the shaft The gear-wheels T and V must be so arranged as to raise the valve L, as the piston-head H approaches it,'hold it suspended until the piston-head has passed, and then allow it to drop in the rear of said piston-head, compelling the water, as it is forced before the piston, to pass into the discharge-chamber M.
Having thus 'described my invention, I elaim'as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. The combination of the hangedv plates al and a2 of the case A, interior'gear4wheels B and E, and pistona head H, with each other, said parts being constructed and arranged substantially as herein shown and described, and for the purpose set forth.
2. The combination of the valve L operated from the drive-shaft F, to allow the piston-head H to pass, und dropping again into place in the rear of the said piston-head, to close the passage G, substantially as herein 'shown and described. y i
3. The combination of the gear-wheel V, gear-wheel T, having :L projection or cam X formed upon its side, and vertical sliding or lifting-bar P, having an inclined shoulder, p', formed upon its side for the cum to operate upon, with each other and with the drive-shaft F, and valve L, substantially as herein shown and' described, and for the purpose set forth.
The above specification of my invention signed by me, ,this 10th day of October, 1867.
