METAL-FINISHING BRUSH.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 717,851, dated January 6, 1903.
Application filed April 18, 1902.
To a/Z whom it may concern.-
Be it knownlthat I, HIRAM H. HIRSCH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Phila` delphia, county of Philadelphia, and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a certain new and useful Improvementin Metal-Finishing Brushes, of which'the following is a specification.
My invention relates to a new and useful improvement in metal-finishing brushes, and has for its object to provide'an apparatus composed of a series of loose revolving brushes which are adapted to strike the metallic sur. face to be finished, and thereby so prepare the surface that it will Vpresent an even dull nish resembling somewhat the finish given to brass by means of emery, but being much more pleasing to the eye, and this apparatus is used to great advantage in finishing the brass parts of metallic bedsteads.
With these ends in view this invention consists in the details of construction and combination of elements hereinafter set forth and then specifically designated by the claim.
In order that those skilled in the art to which-this invention appertains may. understand how to make and use the same, the construction and operation will now be described in detail,referring to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which- Figure l is a cross-sectional view showing the revolving brush acting upon a metallic tube, and Fig. 2 is a longitudinal view of the brush.
In the drawings, A and A represent two disks secured rigidly to a shaft B, and between these disks and secu red to the same 0X- tend pins or rods C, upon each of which are arranged loosely a series of eyes D, and in each of these eyes are secured a series of tufts of wire E, each tuft consisting of a number of strands of -wire of different lengths bunched together.
In operation the shaft B is designed to be rotated at considerable speed, and in doing so the tufts of wire E will be thrown outward by centrifugal force, and by holding a metallic tube or other article within range of .cured together by screws A3.

the brush, so that the ends of the wire will strike the surface of the metal lightly, the su rface will be scratched or stippled by these wire brushes; but the contact between the wire and the metallic surface will be so slight that the scratches or= stipples will all blend, so as to give the appearance of an even surface. The eyes D in being secured loosely to the disks will not present a rigid resistance, and therefore the wire Vbrushes will strike the metallic surface in the lightest possible manner.
The pins C are inserted in the disks by being passed entirely through the disk A' and into holes formed part way through the disk A. Then a third disk A2 is secured outside of the disk A', and these two disks are se- 'Ihus the pins C are held securelyin place, but may be easily removed at any time to substitute new tufts of wire.
Of course I do not Wish to be limited to the exact construction here shown, as slight modioations could be made without departing from the spirit of my invention.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and useful is In a device of the character described, a driving-shaft, two disks A and A' secured rigidly to the shaft, pins or rods carried by said disks and arranged concentrically with the driving-shaft, said pins adapted to pass entirely through the disk A' and part way into the disk A, a disk A2 secured to the outside of the disk A for the purpose of holding the pins in place, a series of eyes pivoted loosely upon each of the pins or rods, a series of tufts of wire secured to each of the eyes, said tufts consisting of a number of wires of dierent lengths hunched together,.substan tially as described and for the purpose specifled.
