SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 716,891, dated December 30, 1902- Application iled October 17, 1901. Serial No. 78,951. (No model.)

Be it known that I, HoRATIo C. I-IAwKs, of Newton, in the county of Middlesex and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Refiectors, 'of which the following is a specilication.
The invention relates to reiiectors for incandescent electric lamps. Heretofore this class of reectors have been provided with a flanged neck at the central opening, and it has been customary to employ an intermediate device for securing the reflector to the lamp-socket. This intermediate device has been provided with a clampingring for securing it to the lamp-socket and has been provided with three or more screws extending radially inward from the rim of the device and arranged to engage the neck of the reiiector below its flange, and thus hold the reflector in place.
In the present invention the reflector is provided with a split clamping-ring for embracing the lamp-socket, which ring is permanently .secured to the reflector` by arms so arranged that the ring is supported concentric with the central opening of the refiector and is free to expand and contract in applying and securing the reflector to the lampsocket. With this construction the reflector is simplilied and its manufacture cheapened, since no iianged neck is required. The installation is also much simplified by eliminating the intermediate connecting device, with a resulting reduction of cost to the consumer. A further advantage of this construction is that it enables the reflector to be more conveniently applied to or removed from the lamp, and also acts to more effectively hold the reiiector in place, while presenting a less cumbersome and unsightly appearance.

The ring B is divided or split at b' and is providedY with radiallyprojecting ears c, through'which the ends ofthe ring may be drawn toward each other by a suitable bindingdevice-such, for instance, as the screw d. The arms b are so arranged that they will allow the ring B to expand in applying the reliector to a lamp-socketand to be contracted to draw the ring firmly around the socket.
In applying the reilector'to the socket S the screw d is loosened until the ring is free to expand sufficiently to pass over the end of vthe socket. The ring is then passed over the lower end of the socket, after which the screw is tightened to draw the ends of the ring toward eachother until the ring rmly clasps the socket. Thus the reflector may be quickly and convenientlyV attached I to or removed from the lamp-socket and when attached is effectively held in place by the clam ping-ring which forms a part of the reiiector.
VVllat I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A reector for electric lamps comprising a body portion having a central opening for the passage of the lamp or lamp-socket, a split clamping-ring for embracing the lampsocket having integral ears projecting from its lower edgeand permanently secured to the body, and a binding device fondrawing the ends of the split ring toward each other, substantially as described.
