IMPROVED HARNESS-PAD BLOCK.
'che rigemlt merma iu ttm Enters man mit making pnt at me smite..
V'.lO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, PALMER SHAW. of`Syracuse,in the county of Onondaga, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Harness-Pad Block; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable those skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective viewiof my invention.
Figure 2 is a vertical longitudinal section, and
Figure 3 is a cross-section taken in the line y y, fig. 1.
Similarlletters of reference indicate corresponding parte in all thc figures.
In the manufacture of harness-pads, the block on which the covering-leather of the cushion` or pad is stretched and dried .to give the said leather a proper form, has heretofore been constructed in one piece, and of wood; but in this ordinary. construction of block, when the nailing-surface becomes cut up and worn', the block becomes useless, and has to he wholly renewed.
The object of this invention is to`provido a forming-block, so constructed in separate parts that the nailingsurface may be detached when worn, and replaced by a new nailingsurface, while the main part or forming portion of the block is permanently retained, thereby making a saving in the expense of keeping the blocks in a good serviceable condition, as hereinafter more fully explained.
In the accompanying drawings, A is a cast-iron form or block, having a groove cast in its upper side for holding strips, B, of leather, strawboard, or other suitable material for making a nailing-surface. This nailholding material is secured in the groove of the block in a detachable manner, by means of screws c e, so that when it becomes cut up and worn by use, it may be readily renewed without having to provide an entirely new block or form. The two wings, A A, of the block, may be cast separate, and united by riveting a strip of metal, D, over the joint, or they may be cast in a single piece. However, I do not wish to confine myself to this particnlar method of construction, as the hollow iron block or form maybe stamped out of thin sheet metal, or the block may be made wholly of wood, as before, but be made in two parts, so that the part whichvrcceives and holds the nails may be detached when worn, and renewed without having tol throw away the main or form portion of the block.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. I claim a harness-pad block, when so constructed that the portion in which the nails are driven is made separate and detachable from the main portion of the block, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. I claim the hollow iron block A, filling B, and set-screws c c, constructed and combined substantially as herein shown, and for the purpose described.
PALMER SHAW.
