ELIZABETH LYNCH, OF DENISON, TEXAS.
SCREEN-DOOR.
SPEGIFIUATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 716,447, dated December 23, 1902. Application filed September 4, 1902. Serial No. 122,085. N m el-J To all whmn-it may concern:
Be it known that LELIZABETH LYNoH,a citizen of the United States, residing at Denison, county of Grayson, and State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Screen-Doors, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to screen-doors.
The object of the present invention is to provide a screen-door having an improved and novel gate which can be readily opened and closed and will make provision for sweeping trash through the door without necessitating opening thereof and also make it possible to introduce small articles, such as packages, through the door while it is closed.
To accomplish the foregoing objects, I provide a screen-door having a gate closing and opening at the bottom of the door and which can be readily opened and closed from the inside and held opened or closed, said gate and attachments therefor, as also the improved and novel construction of the screen-door, being set forth hereinafter and the novel features embodied in the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a view of the outside of the door with the gate down; Fig. 2, a similar view of the inside of the door; Fig. 3, a view similar to Fig. 2, showing the gate raised; Fig. l, a vertical section with the gate open; Fig. 5, a transverse section on line or a: of Fig. 2, and Fig. 6 a transverse section on line 1 y of Fig. 2.
The screen-door proper is shown at 1, and the framing and fastening for the netting made of any preferred construction. The door is provided at its bottom with the opening 2 about six inches in height, and the lower ends of the side pieces are cut away at 3. The door is provided with the transverse pieces 4: and'5, the upper one of which is wider than the thickness of the side pieces of the door and provided with the groove 6. At the lower portions of the side pieces of the door are the guides 7, whose lower ends are cut away similar to the cut-away ends of the side pieces.
The gate is shown at 9 and has a screensection 10 and is provided with ribs 11, which slide in the guides 7. The side pieces 12 of the gate extend upwardly and are adapted to bear against the side pieces of the main door,
and they are connected by a cross-piece 13, adapted to fit in the groove'6. One or more buttons 14 can be employed on the cross-piece 5 to enter notches 15 in the side pieces 12 to lock the gate in raised position at different heights, and a lock 16 can be employed on the cross-pieces 5 and 13. The object of providing the cross-piece 13 is to furnish a handle within reach for raising the gate, and by reason of this cross-piece fitting in the groove 6 and the employment of the side pieces 12, as bearing against the side pieces of the main door, the gate is made to lie tightly against the main door at all times, and the guides,
aside from guiding the gate, have the foregoing function.
It will be seen that the gate can be raised and secured at any timeit is desired to sweep out the room, and the dust and the trash can be brushed through the opening in the bottom of the door without necessitating the opening of the door, and the cut-away lower ends of the side pieces of the door and the guides make it possible to reach under the same with the broom. The opening in the screen-door and the provision of the gate also make it possible to introduce small packagessuch as groceries, &c.through the door without opening the same.
I am aware that changes of construction could be resorted to in carrying out my invention without essentially modifying the invention, and I therefore lay claim to all modifications falling within the spirit and scope of the invention.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A screen-door having an entrant-opening extending from its bottom upwardly, and a gate for closing said opening.
2. A screen-door having an entrant-opening extending from its bottom upwardly, and a screen-gate for closing said openin 3. A screen-door having an entrant-opening extending from its bottom upwardly, and a sliding gate for closingsaid opening.
4. A screen-door having an opening, and provided with a cross-piece, and a sliding gate for closing said opening which has a cross-piece adapted to engage the cross-piece on said door when the gate is closed.
5. A screen-door having an opening and provided with a grooved cross-piece and a sliding gate for closing said opening, which is provided with a cross-piece adapted to fit I the groove of the cross-piece aforesaid when the gate is closed.
6. A screen-door having an opening, a sliding gate for closing said opening, guides for guiding the gate and holding it. against the screen-door, side pieces on the gate slidable against the screen-door side pieces, and crosspieces on the screen-door and gate adapted to engage when the gate is closed.
7. A screen-door having an entrant-opening extending from its bottom upwardly and ELIZABETH LYNCH.
