Be it known that I, BENNO VOM EIGEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Newark, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Holding-Catches for Purse or Bag Frames; and I do hereby declare the following to he a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to numerals of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

My present invention has reference to improvements in catches or looks for purse or bag frames of the various kinds, and more especially adapted for use with the frames of the belt or chatelaine bags.

The invention has for its principal objects to provide a novel construction of bag-frame catch, with a view of producing a strong and durable construction, as well as a simple organization of parts, whereby a catch construction is the result, which can be easily manipulated by the use of one hand for the opening of the bag-frame sections.

A further object of this invention is to provide a neat catch and one which fully retains the frame-sections of the bag in their closed relation, although the bag itself may be filled to its utmost capacity.

\Vith these various objects in view the present invention consists in the novel construction of bag-frame catch hereinafter set forth; and, furthermore, this invention consists in the various novel arrangements and combinations of parts, as well as in the details of the construction thereof, all of which will be hereinafter more fully described and then finally embodied in the clauses of the claim.

The invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figures 1 and 2 are a front and rear elevation, respectively, of a bag frame and catch embodying the principles of this invention. Fig. 3 is a top view of the same with the parts represented in their closed relation, and Fig. 4 is a similar view with the parts shown in their open relation. Fig. 5 is alongitudinal vertical section of the several parts of the holdingcatch in their closed relation; and Fig. 6 is a similar view of the said parts, but representing a spring supported and controlled presserbar in its depressed position to release its holding portions from holding engagement with parts of the catch-casing to permit of the pivotal separation of the bag-frame sections. Fig. 7 is a blank representation of a piece of sheet metal from which a box-shaped holding member in which the spring supported and controlled presser-bar is arranged is struck up. Fig. 8 is a perspective View of the said box-shaped holding member, and Fig. 9 is a collective representation of the several parts of said box-shaped holding member and the presser-bar in perspective, the several parts being represented in their detached positions before assembling said parts in their operative positions. Fig. 10 is a perspec tive view of said catch casing or member with which the presser-bar is adapted to be brought in holding engagement.

Similar characters of reference are employed in all of said hereinabove-described views to indicate corresponding parts.

In the said drawings the reference character 1 indicates any suitable construction of purse or bag frame, comprising a pair of frame-sections, as 2 and 3, which are pivoted together at their ends l, so as to close one within the other in usual manner.

Suitably secured upon the upper central portion of the frame-section 2, preferably by means of holding-lugs 6, which are passed through suitable receiving-openings in the frame-section and are bent over against the back thereof, is a suitably-constructed and ornamental casing or box 5, the said casing or box, as will be seen more especially from an inspection of Fig. 10, being made-with a centrally-disposed receiving portion 7, having a longitudinally-extending opening 8 in the top and an opening 9 in the side. Between the two openings 8 and 9 is a connecting-opening 10. The same, however, has been made much narrower than thelength of the opening 8, so as to provide a pair of 0ppositely-arranged stops or holding-lugs 11. the holding-lugs 6 any other suitable fastening means may be employed for securing the said box or casing 5 in its operative position upon the frame-section 2. Suitably secured against the side of the other frame-section 3 by means of rivets 13 or any other suitable holding means is the box shaped holding member 12, provided with a finger-piece 14 and the spring supported and controlled presser-bar 15. The said box-shaped holding member 12 is made in one piece by being struck up from a blank 16 of sheet metal of the shape represented in Fig. 7. This blank is made with a body portion 18, in which are perforations 17 for the reception of the pins 13, by means of which it is attached to the side of the frame-section 3, the said body portion 18 being connected, by means of a neck 19, with a flat head 20, having a centrallydisposed hole or opening 21 and the oppositely-extending lugs or ears 22, all as illus- By means of suitable tools this blank is drawn into the shape illustrated more particularly in Figs. 8 and 9, the fiat head 20 being formed into an angularlyshaped box 23, having the curved top 24, with the previously-mentioned hole or opening 21 therein, and having an open bottom 25, as shown. In this opening I then secure, by bending the lugs or ears 22 over, aplate 26, the said lugs or ears 22 being tightly squeezed into oppositely-placed recesses 27 in said plate for securely holding said plate 26 in the open bottom 25 of said box 23, and the lower surfaces of the said plate 26 and the sides of the box 23 will be flush. From an inspection of the figures of the drawings it will be seen that the said box 23 extends at a right angle directly above the neck 19 in a direction toward the casing or box 5, so that when the pivoted f rame-sections are closed the said box 23 will arrange itself directly above the centrally-disposed receiving portion 7 and the openings 8 and 10 therein for the purposes to be presently described.

The plate 26 is provided with an opening 28, preferably of a rectangular configuration, and movably arranged in said openingis the shank of the previously-mentioned presserbar 15. The lower end of the said bar 15 is made with a pair of oppositely-extending holding lugs or projections 29, preferably provided with the chamfered edges 30. These lugs or projections 29, as will be seen from Figs. 5 and 6, are arranged beneath the plate 26, the main portion of the shank of the presser-bar extending into and through the said box 23 and into the thimble 14, which fits and is slidably arranged in the hole or opening 21 in said curved top of the box 23. The shank of the said presser-bar 15 is made at its upper end with a stud 31, which is passed through a perforation in the upper surface of the thimble 14 and riveted down against the same to secure the parts in place.

A coiled spring 32 is arranged around that part of the shank of the presser-bar 15 be tween the chambered portions of the box 23 and the thimble 14. When these parts are as sembled and properly secured together, the spring 32 retains the presser-bar 15 and. its oppositely-extending holding lugs or projections 29 in the positions indicated in Fig. 5, and against the inner edges 33 of the two oppositely-placed holding-lugs 11 of the casing or box 5, and whereby the two frame- sections 2 and 3 are positively held in their closed or locked relation against accidental separation of the two frame-sections. To separate or open the two frame-sections all that is necessaryis to press upon the finger-piece formed by the thimble 14, whereby said thimble and the presser-bar 15 are pushed farther into the chambered part of the box 23, against the tension of the coils of the spring 32, and whereby the two holding-lugs 29 are forced beneath the lugs 11 of the casing or box 5, and in separating the two frame-sections said lugs 29 passing through the opening 9 in the front of the box or casing 5 and the shank of the presser-bar 15 passing directly through the opening 10 between the holding-lugs 11. When the pressure is released from the finger-piece, the said presser-bar 15 and its holding lugs or projections 29 will again assume their normal initial position, due to the action of the spring 32, the chamfered surfaces 30, in closing the frame-sections, riding against and directly beneath the under surface of the holding-lugs 11 and the lugs or projections 29 again being forced into the opening 8 and directly behind the edges 34 of the holding-lugs 11 to retain the several parts in their locked engagement, with the two frame-sections in their pivotally-closed positions.

I am aware that some changes may be made in the different arrangements and combinations of the parts without departing from the scope of my invention. Hence I do not limit my invention to the exact arrangements and combinations of the parts as herein described and as illustrated, nor do I confine myself to the exact details of the construction of the said parts.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim is- 1. In a purse or bag frame, the combination,

- with a pair of frame-sections, one of which is provided With a catch-receiving means, of a holding-catch on the other frame-section, comprising an upwardly-extending holding member, a box at the upper portion of said holding member and extending from the side thereof, so as to be capable of a movement directly above said catch-receiving means on the other frame-section, when said framesections are closed, a presser-bar slidably arranged in said box, and means at one end of said bar adapted to be brought in holding engagement with the said catch-receiving means, su bstantially as and for the purposes set forth.

2. In a purse or bag frame, the combination,

with a pair of frame-sections, one of which is provided with a catch-receiving means, of a holding-catch on the other frame-section, comprising an upwardly-extending holding member, a box at the upper portion of said holding member and extending from the side thereof, so as to be capable of a movement directly above said catch-receiving means on the other frame-section, when said framesections are closed, a presser-bar slidably arranged in said box, anda pair of oppositelyextending holding-lugs on the lower end of said presser-bar adapted to be brought in holding engagement with the said catch-receiving means, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.

3. In apurse or bag frame,the combination, with a pair of frame-sections, one of which is provided with a catch-receiving means, of a holding-catch on the other frame-section, comprising, an upwardly-extendingholdingmemher, a box at the upper portion of said holding member, and extending from the side thereof, so as to be capable of movement directly above said catch-receiving means on the other frame-section, when said frame-sections are closed, a presser-bar slidably arranged in said box, and a pair of oppositelyextending holding-lugs on the lower end of said presser-bar adapted to be brought in holding engagement with the said catch-receiving means, a thimble on the upper end of said presser-bar, and a spring encircling said bar on that portion directly within said box and beneath said thimble, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.

4. In a purse or bag frame, the combination, with a pair of frame-sections, one of which is provided with a catch-receiving means, of a holding-catch on the other frame-section, comprising an upwardly-extending holding member, a box at the upper portion of said holding member, and extending from the side thereof, so as to be capable of a movement directly above said catch-receiving means on the other frame'section, when said frame-sections are closed, the said box being provided with a perforated top and an open bottom, holding-lugs connected with the edges of said box which surround the said open bottom, a plate secured in the said bottom by means of said holding-lugs, said plate being provided with an opening, a presser-bar slidably arranged in the said box having its lower portion extending through the opening in said plate, and means on said lower portion of said presser-bar adapted to be brought in holding engagement with the said catch-receiving means, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.

5. In apurse or bag frame, the combination, with a pair of frame-sections, one of which is provided with a catch-receiving means, of a holding-catch on the otherframe-section, comprising, an up wardly-extending holding member, a box at the upper portion of said holding member, and extending from the side thereof, so as to be capable of a movement directly above said catch-receiving means on the other frame-section, when said frame-sections are closed, the said boxbeing provided with a perforated top and an open bottom, holding-lugs connected with the edges of said box which surround the said open bottom, a plate secured in said bottom by means of said holding-lugs, said plate being provided with an opening, a presser-bar slidably arranged in said box having its lower portion extending through the opening in said plate, and a pair of oppositely-extending holding-lugs on the lower end of said presser-bar, adapted to be brought in holding engagement with the said catch-receiving means, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.

6. In a purse orbag frame, the combination, with a pair of frame-sections, one of which is provided with a catch-receiving means, of a holdingcatch,on the other frame-section,comprising an upwardly-extending holding member, a box at the upper portion of said holding member and extending from the side thereof, so as to be capable of a movement directly above said catch-receiving means on the other frame-section, when said frame-sections are closed, the said box being provided with a perforated top and an open bottom, holding-lugs connected with the edges of said box which surround the said open bottom, a plate secured in said bottom by means of said holding-lugs, said plate being provided with an opening, a presser-bar slidabl y arranged in said box having its lower portion extending through the opening in said plate, and a pair of oppositelyextending holding-lugs on the lower end of said presser-bar adapted to be brought in holding engagement with the said catch-receiving means, a thimble on the upper end portion of said presser-bar, said thimble being slidably arranged in and extending from the perforation in the top of said box, and a spring encircling the said bar on that portion directly within said box and beneath said thimble, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.

7. In a purse or bag frame, the combination with a box-shaped device,on one of said framesections, having a centrally-disposed catchreceiving means, provided with openings 8, 9 and 10, and a pair of oppositely-extending holding-lugs 11, of a holding-catch on the other frame-section, comprising an upwardlyextending holding member, a box at the upper portion of said holding member and extending from the side thereof, so as to be capable of a movement directly above said catchreceiving means on the other frame-sections, when said frame-sections are closed, a presserbar slidably arranged in said box, and means at one end of said bar adapted to be brought in holding engagement with the said catchreceiving means, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.

8. In a purse or bag frame, the combination,

with a box-shaped device, on one of said frame-sections, having a centrally-disposed catch-receiving means, provided with openings 8, 9, and 10, and a pair of oppositely-extending holding-lugs 11, of a holding-catch, on the other frame-section, comprising an upwardly-extending holding member, a box at the upper portion of said holding member and extending from the side thereof, so as to be capable of a movement directly above said catch-receiving means on the other framesection, when said frame-sections are closed, a presser-bar slidably arranged in said box, and a pair of oppositely-extending holdinglugs on the lower end of said presser-bar, adapted to be brought in holding engagement with the said catch-receiving means, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.

9. In a purse or bag frame, the combination, with a box-shaped device, on one of said frame-sections, having a centrally-disposed catch-receiving means, provided with openings 8, 9 and 10, and a pair of oppositely-extending holding-lugs 11, of a holding-catch, on the other frame-section, comprising an upwardly-extending holding member, a box at the upper portion of said holding member, and extending from the side thereof, so as to be capable of a movement directly above said catch-receiving means on the other framesection, when said frame-sections are closed, a presser-bar slidably arranged in said box, and a pair of oppositely-extending holdinglugs on the lower end of said presser-bar adapted to be brought in holding engagement With the said catch-receiving member, a thimble on the upper end of said presser-bar, and a spring encircling said bar on that portion directly within said box and beneath said thimble, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.

10. In a purse or bag frame, the combination, with a box-shaped device, on one of said frame-sections, having a centrally-disposed catch-receiving means, provided with openings 8, 9 and 10, and a pair of oppositely-extending holding-lugs 11, of a holding-catch on the other frame-section, comprising an upwardly-extending holding member, a box at the upper portion of said holding member and extending from the sides thereof, so as to be capable of a movement directly above said catch-receiving means on the other framesection, when said frame-sections are closed, the said box being provided with a perforated top and an open bottom, holding-lugs connected with the edges of said box which surround the said open bottom, a plate secured in said bottom by means of said holding-lugs, said plate being provided with an opening, a presser-bar slidably arranged in said box having its lower portion extending through the opening in said plate, and means onrsaid lower portion of said presser-bar adapted to be brought in holding engagement with the said catch-receiving means, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.

11. In a purse or bag frame the combination, with a box-shaped device, on one of said frame-sections, having a centrally-disposed catch-receiving means provided with openings 8, 9 and 10, and a pair of oppositely-extending holding-lugs 11, of a holding-catch, on the other frame-section, comprising an upwardly-extending holding member, a box at the upper portion of said holding member and extending from the side thereof, so as to be capable of a movement directly above said catch-receiving means, on the other framesection, when said frame-sections are closed, the said box being provided with a perforated top and an open bottom, holding-lugs connected with the edges of said box which surround the said open bottom, a plate secured in said bottom by means of said holding-lugs, said plate being provided with an opening, a presser-bar slidably arranged in said box having its lower portion extending through the opening in said plate, and a pair of oppositelyextending holding-lugs on the lower end of said presser-bar adapted to be brought in holding engagement with the said catchreceiving means, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.

12. In a purse or bag frame, the combination, with a box-shaped device, on one of said frame-sections, having a centrally-disposed catch-receiving means provided with openings 8, 9 and 10, and a pair of oppositely-extending holding-lugs 11, of a holding-catch, on the other frame-section, comprising an upwardly-extending holding member, a box at the upper portion of said holding member, and extending from the side thereof, so as to be capable ofa movement directly above the said catch-receiving means on the other framesection, when said frame-sections are closed, the said box being provided with a perforated top and an open bottom, holding-lugs connected with the edges of said box which surround the said open bottom, a plate secured in said bottom by means of said holding-lugs, said plate being provided with an opening, a presser-bar slidably arranged in said box, having its lower portion extending through the opening in said plate, and a pair of oppositely-extending holding-lugs on the lower end of said presser-bar adapted to be brought in holding engagement with the said catchreceiving means, a thimble on the upper end portion of said presser-bar, said thimble being slidably arranged in and extending from the perforation in the top of said box, and a spring encircling the said bar on that portion directly within said box and beneath said IIO thimble, substantiallyas and for the purposes set forth.

13.
