NON-REFILLABLE BOTTLE.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 716,391, dated December 23, 1902.
Application filed October 27, 1902. Serial No. 128,867. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN A. DE VITO, a citin zen of the United States, and a resident of Boston, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Non-Refillable Bottles, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in non-refillable bottles; and it has for its object to provide a simple and cheap construction of device which shall serve as a means for preventing the refilling of a bottle after the contents thereof have been removed, as will hereinafter be more fully shown and described, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, wherein- Figure l is a central longitudinal section of my non-refillable bottle, showing the diaphragm in its normal closed position within the bottle-neck. Fig. 2 is a similar longitudinal section Ashowing the bottle tipped during the discharge of its contents and the diaphragm released from its seat during such operation, and Fig. 3 represents a detail top plan View of the diaphragm and the coiled spring to which it is yieldingly attached.

In the drawings, Arepresents the body portion of a glass bottle, as usual, and B is the neck of the same. Within the lower portion of the neck is made an annular groove or recess C, adapted to receive and retain a coiledwire spring D, the inner or central portion of which is attached in a suitable manner to a Valve or diaphragm E, which may be made of metal, glass, or other suitable material, as shown. Normally the said disk E rests upon the coiled spring D. Below the groove C is made an inwardly-projecting annular shoulder F, which serves to prevent the disk E from being forced downward into the bottle, and thus preventing the lfraudulent re- Iilling of the latter.
The disk E iits loosely Within the lower portion Biof the bottle-neck, and above such valve-containing part B is made an enlargement B", as shown in Figs. l and 2.
In using the device the bottle is first illed with the liquid, after which the valve-disk E and its connected coiled spring D are pushed downward through the bottle-neck until the outer portion of said spring is retained in the annular recess O, as shown in Fig. l, and in such position the disk E is held centrally and yieldingly upon the springD, as shown in said Fig. l.
To empty the bottle, it may be tipped or inclined as shown in Fig. 2, when the gravity and force of the outflowiug liquid will cause the diskE to yield, with the spring D, toward the mouth of the neck sufficiently to allow the liquid to iow out freely between the periphery of said valve-disk and the interior of the enlarged neck portion B", as shown in Fig. 2. As soon as the bottle is placed in its vertical normal position the valve E will automatically assume the normal closed position shown in Fig. l, which closing movement is edected by the coiled spring D, that is connected to said disk E.
The valve E, supported'on the coiled spring D, eectually prevents the refilling of the bottle after once emptied.
What I wish to secure by Letters Patent and claim is- The herein-described non-refillable bottle, consistingin combination, a bottle A, having a neck B, a neck enlargement B", a valvedisk E, and a coiled spring D, yieldingly connected to said disk, a neck-recess C, for receiving and retaining said spring in position, and a valve arresting shoulder F arranged below said spring substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
