To all whom it may, concern:
Be it known that [,THOMAS R. Gnnnma citizen of the United States, residing at Anaheim in the county of Orange and State of California, have invented a new and useful Valve Mechanism, of which the following isa speci- This invention relates to apparatus for controlling the admission of the actuating fluid or agent to actuate mechanism, and particularly to valve operating mechanisms; and
,someof the objects of the invention are to provide an apparatus or mechanism of-this character which will be simple in construc- 5 tion and at the same time will be positive and eifective in operation.
An object of this invention is to provide means for operating the valves or cut-offs controlling theinduction and eduction of the actuating-fluid medium or agent to the parts operated thereby and to effect such operation by the movement of such parts.
With these and other objects in view the invention consists, essentially, in the construction, combination, and arrangement of parts,substantially as more fully described in the following specification, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, forming part of this application, in which- Figure 1 is a front elevational view of a construction to which the invention is shown as applied, and Fig. 2 is a side elevational view of the same. 1

Referring to the drawings, the reference character 1 designates the upright members or timbers of aframe or structure and which may support top pieces or plates 2, and to the 0 uprights 1 maybe secured cross-pieces 3 and 4, the former being connected by vertical brace or timber 5, substantially as shown in the drawings; but the construction of the frame or structure is not material, as the same 5 is only employed to illustrate the relative position of the parts shown and forms no part of this invention.
J ournaled in bearings 6 upon the top of the frame is the shaft 7, carrying a band or pulley wheel 8, which is the driving-wheel of the engine, and on one end of, the shaft 7 is a crank-disk 9, having connected therewith a pitman l0, movably connected with a crosshead 11 upon a piston-rod 12, working in a stuffing box or gland 13 upon one end of a cylinder or like device 14, preferably mounted on a bracket or legs 15, secured, to the base or floor of the structure 1 essentially in the manner shown.
A storage tank or reservoir 16 for the actuating agent or medium may be employed and may be provided with connections 17 and 18, with the induction pipes or tubes 19 of the cylinder, and which are preferably provided with valves or cut-ofis 20 to control the admission of the fluid to the cylinder. The cylinder 14 is also preferably provided with valvecontrolled eduction or exhaust connections 21, and the valves in the connections 19 and 21 are preferably constructed with long stems 22, to which are connected arms 23 and 24, respectively, and these arms are preferably movably connected with operating- rods 25 and 26, that, in turn, are connected by links 27 with a rack or curved plate 28, constructed to be engaged and operated by a pincarrying wheel or segmental rack 29, preferably movably mounted in brackets 30, desirably secured upon the cylinder 14, and the rack or wheel 29 is preferably provided with a pin or similar device 31 to engage an apertured angle plate or bracket 32 uponan actuating-rod 33, preferably movably mounted in guides 34; upon the cylinder 14.
The piston-rod 12 is preferably provided with an arm 35, constr ucted to travel in the slot in the free end of the actuating-rod 33 during the major portion of the stroke or travel of the piston-rod 12, but to engage and reciprocate said actuating-rod near the end of each stroke, and thereby turn the wheel or segment 29,which elevates or depresses the rack 28, thereby elevating or depressing the operating- rods 25 and 26 to close or open the valves controlling the induction or eduction of the fluid to the cylinder, as will be readily understood.
The operation of this invention will be readily understood from the foregoing description when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings and the following explanation thereof. The actuating-fluid medium or agent passes from the reservoir 16 through the connections 17 and 18 to the respective ends of the cylinder; but the valves opened at the same time.

In this position of the parts described the piston will travel downwardly until the arm 35, carried thereby, contacts with the lug or stop 36 at the bottom of the slot in the actuating-rod 33, whereupon the position of the valves or cut-offs in the induction and eduction pipe or connection will be reversed, and the actuating fluid will enter the lower part of the cylinder to force the piston up, the spent fluid theretofore introduced escaping from the upper end of the cylinder through the open exhaust or eduction connection in the upper end of the cylinder,as will be readily understood. When the piston-rod 12 shall have reached its maximum upstroke, the arm 35 thereon will have again elevated the actuating-rod 33 and restored the parts to the position supposed at the beginning of the description of the operation hereof.
This invention is in no manner limited to use with the mechanism herein described and shown, and the same is employed merely as a typepf apparatus with which the invention may be employed in order to illustrate an application thereof; but it will be understood that this valve-operating mechanism is constructed to be used with any mechanism wherein it is desired to control the induction and eduction of the actuating fluid by'the travel of the parts driven by such fluid.
I claim- 1. A valve-operating mechanism provided with a cylinder having a piston and pistonrod, an actuating-rod operated by the pistonrod, a segment moved by said actuating-rod, operating-rods connected with the inlet and outlet valves of said cylinder and a rackbar in engagement with said segment and connected with said operatingrods to control the inlet and exhaust of the cylinder.
2. A valve-operating mechanism provided with a cylinder having inlet and exhaust connections and a piston and piston-rod, valves in said connections having elongated stems carrying arms, operating-rods connected therewith, a rack bar connected with said rods, a segmentin engagement with said bar, an actuatingrod to move the segment and means carried by the piston-rod to propel the actuating-rod.
3. A valve-operating mechanism provided with a cylinder havinga piston, a piston-rod and connections, valves in said connections having elongated stems carrying arms, operating rods connected therewith, a rack bar connected with said rods, a segment in engagement with said bar, a slotted actuatingrod to move said segment and an arm carried by said piston-rod and passing through said slot, whereby the valves are actuated by means of the piston-rod.
4. A valve-operating mechanism provided with a cylinder having a piston and connections, valves in the latter having elongated stems carrying arms, operatingrods connected at each end to the respective arms of the induction and eduction valves, an actuating-rod mounted in guides on the cylinder and having a slotted end, a piston -rod connected with the piston and carrying an arm to operate in said slot and means operated by said actuating-rod to control the valves.
5. A valve-operating mechanism provided with a cylinder having a piston and connections, valves in the latter having elongated stems carrying arms, operatingrods connected at each end to the respective arms of the induction and eduction valves, an actuating-rod mounted in guides on the cylinder and having a slotted end, a piston -rod connected with the piston and carrying an arm to operate in said slot, a rack-bar connected with said operating-rods, a device in engagement with said bar and with said actuatingrod, whereby the valves are actuated by the movement of the piston-rod.
