To all whmn it may concern.-
Be it known that I, WEBSTER A. ToMPKINs, a citizen of the United States, residing at No. 32 Oason street, Montavilla Station, city of Portland, county of Multnornah, and State of Oregon, have invented a new and useful Hoisting-Machine, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to that class of hoist in which the vertically-reciprocating piston and piston-rod supporting a suitably-formed platform is given an axially-reciprocating movement, whereby the load carried by the hoist may be moved forward and back in an arc of a circle. I attain these objects by means of mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a vertical section of the entire mechanism; Fig. 2, a horizontal section of the vertical cylinder on the line A B. Fig. 3 is a transverse elevation of the vertical cylinder, showing the manner of journaling at the bottom; and Fig. 4, an elevation of the back end of the auxiliary cylinder 2, Fig. 1 showing the method of journaling and mountmg.

The cylinder (0 and its cylinder-head b are bolted together by the cap-screws 0 0. The guide-head (Z is screwed and pinned to the top end of the cylinder a. The head Z has trunnion-ears 6 cast upon it, by means of which and the trunnion-pin f the cylinder is hinged upon its base-plate g, which is provided with trunnion-lugs 7b. The piston z' is constructed to pass fluid or gas tight up through the cylinder a and also forms the guide for the lower end of the piston-rod]. The platform 7 is attached to the top end of the piston-rod by means of the brackets Z Z.
In the horizontal auxiliary cylinder 2, No. 3 is the back cylinder-head, provided with trunnion-ears, by means of which and the trunnion-pin 4 it is mounted upon its baseplate 5, upon which are cast trunnion-lugs 6 6. The front cylinder-head 7 is provided with a stuffing-box 8. The piston 9 is constructed to work fluid or gas tight through the cylinder 2 and is connected to the vertical cylinder at a by the connecting-rod 10, the wrist-pin 11, and. the strap 12 12.
The pipes m m are connected by suitable flexible joints through a four-way Valve to the power-line. The pipe a is similarly connected through a three-way valve to the powerline. These valves are located at any convenient point for operation.
Operation: After the load has been placed upon the platform It the motive power, (which may be either fluid or gas under pressure,) which I shall assume to be air, is admitted to the lower end of the vertical cylinder, and the load is raised to the desired height, when, if it is desired to move it either forward or back in order to deposit the load, as in placing the rolls of paper upon the brackets of a printing-press, air is suitably admitted to one end and exhausted from the opposite end of the horizontal cylinder to accomplish the movement. hen the load is deposited, the platformk is lowered by exhausting air from the cylinder a through the pipe at, by which it was admitted.
I am aware that previous to my invention hoisting-machines have been made with vertical cylinders and vertically-reciprocating pistons, piston-rods supporting platforms, and operated by Water, steam, and air under pressure. I therefore do not claim such a combination, broadly; but
What I do claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination with a vertical reciproeating hoist journaled at the bottom to its bed-plate, by trunnion-mountings, a horizontal cylinder, having its back cylinder-head provided with trunnion-mountings and journaled to its bed-plate, said cylinder having a horizontally-reciprocating piston and pistonrod, connected to the vertical hoist by a wristpin and straps, in such manner that as power is applied to either side of the said horizontal piston by means of suitable pipes and valves, the vertical hoist may be inclined from the perpendicular for the purpose and substantially as described.
