The object of my invention is to provide a power applicator oi simple, durable and comparatively inexpensive construction.
A further object of my invention is to provide a power applicator in which a movable member may be actuated by power imparted thereto and the movement thereof may be transferred through a laaytong type of applicator to a device to be moved.
More particularly it is my object to provide a cylinder having a movable piston therein to which is connected a piston rod extending from the cylinder, a lazytong link mechanism for applying the power to a device to be moved, such as a supporting hook, the lazytong link mechanism having one end pivoted to the cylinder, its other end pivoted to the hook and its intermediate portion pivoted to the piston rod.
Still a further object is to arrange the lazytong mechanism in such a manner that with an short stroke of the piston a long movement of the hook results whereby the disadvantage of having along cylinder is eliminated. It may here be mentioned that in many machines, such as cranes or the like, the vertical space is limited and my device is particularly adapted for such an installation. My power applicator may also be used in any other type of installation where it' would be found suitable, such as in operating the blade of an elevating grader where oil pressure is available or operating dump wagons or other road machinery or the like.
With these and other objects in View my invention yconsists in the construction, arrangement and combination of the various parts of my device, whereby the objects contemplated are attained, as hereinafter more fully set forth, pointed out in my claim, and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a crane track showing two of my power applicators used in connection therewith for providing traveling lifting cranes.
Figure 2 is a central sectional view of my power applicator.
Figure 3 is a detail sectional view taken on the line 3-3 of Figure 2; and
Figure 4 is an end elevation of the right hand end of the power applicator shown in Figure 2.
On the accompanying drawing, I have shown the power applicator used as a crane, only by way of illustration. As before stated, it may be applied to many other uses. I have illustrated a crane track 10 having wheeled carriages 12 mounted thereon with the power applicators A pivoted thereto.
The power applicator A at the left hand of Figure 1 is shown in partially extended position while at the right hand side of the iigure it is shown in contracted or raised position. The power applicator A consists of a. cylinder 14 having cylinder heads 16 and 18 associated with the cylinder. The cylinder 14 and the head 16 and 18 are held in assembled positions by means of 65 tie rods 20. A bracket 22 is secured to the head 16 by means of four of the tie rods 20 (see Figure 4). The bracket 22 may be pivoted to the carriage 12 by means of pivot pin 24 or may be connected with any suitable means of support.
i Within the cylinder 14 I provide a piston 26 having connected therewith a piston rod 28. The piston rod 28 extends through a packing gland 30 in the cylinder head 18.
A bracket 32 is secured to the head 18 by means of a plurality of tie rods 20. A lazytong mechanism B consisting of a plurality of links pivoted together by means of shoulder pivot bolts 34 arranged at their centers and ends has one end pivotally connected with the bracket 32 by means of a pivot bolt 36. Pivoted tothe other end of the lazytong mechanism B is a swivel yoke 33 connected with the mechanism by means of a pivot bolt 40. A hook 42 is swivelly connected with the yoke 38.
In order to balance the strain on the pivot bolts 34 I provide the lazytong links of the mechanism B extending in one direction of single construction as indicated at 44 and extending in the other direction of double tube construction as indicated at 46. The piston rod 28 is pivoted to the lazytong mechanism by a pivot bolt 48. To` balance the strain on the pivot bolt 48 I provide a pair of half links 50 extending to the ends of va pair of the links 44 and 46.
The cylinder'14 is adapted to receive a fluid under pressure on either side of the piston 26 and such uid may be supplied thereto through piping 52 and 54. A four way Valve 56 is provided for controlling the iiow of such uid which may be either air, water, oil or otherfluid pressure. The four Way valve 56 is provided with a control handle 58 and has two of its connections made with the pipes 52 and 54. A third connec- 10 tion is made with a flexible hose 60, while the j fourth connection 62 serves as an exhaust to atmosphere. This exhaust may be connected with a sewer in the case of water or with a storage tank in the case of oil. As shown, the device is hooked up for operation on compressed air which is discharged to the atmosphere.
Practical operation In the operation of my device the hook 42 may be either lowered or raised depending upon the position of the valve lever 58. A short travel of the piston 26 quickly raises an object a considerable distance and the relative distance of such movement and the piston may be regulated by the number of links in the la'zytong mechanism. As shown a leverage of four to one is obtained. This is accomplished by three sets of full links and two sets of half links on the ends. I claim as my invention:
In a power applicator, a cylinder, a piston therein, a piston rod connected with said piston and extending from said cylinder, a lifting hook, a lazy tong linked connection between said hook and said piston comprising half links at the ends of said connection and full links intermediate said half links, said piston rod being connected to said lazy tong linked connection intermediate the ends thereof and additional half link connections between said piston rod and the full links of said linked connection, said piston rod being interposed between said linked connection and said additional half link connections.
