BIPE-STRAIGI-ITENING MACHINE.
Application filed may 22, 1922. Serial No. 562.612.
ToaZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HUGH A. BARDEEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Los Angeles, .in the county of Los Angeles, State of California, have invented a new and useful Pipe-Straightening Machine, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to pipe straightening machines.
The principal object of the invention is to provide a machine by which bent pipe may be straightened.
Further objects and advantages will be made evident hereinafter.
Referring to the drawing which is for illustrative purposes only,
Fig. 1 is a plan view of one embodiment of my invention, a portion thereof being broken away to better illustrate the construction;
Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same embodiment of my invention, a portion there of being broken away to better illustrate the form of construction.
.Fig. 8 is a section through a preferred form of jack on a scale somewhat enlarged as compared to Figs. 1 and 2.
Fig. 4 is an elevation of one of the restraining members and a section through the frame.
Fig. '5 is a perspective view of 'a special form of block.
Fig. 6' is-aview showing the method. of us ing such blocks.
In the form of the invention shown, I provide a frame 11 which consists of two channel iron members 12 and 13 tied together with spacing members 14. This framemay be supported on any suitable form of support such, for example, as the pillars 15. Secured inside the channel members 12 and 13', near the center thereof, is a hydraulic jack 20 which consists of a cy] inder member 21 carrying a plunger 22. Packing 23 is provided near the top of the plunger, this packing being compressed by a follower 24. Cup leathers 25 are provided near the bottom of the plunger 22. The jack is operated by water pressure delivered by a pipe 31 from a pump 32, the pipe 31 being secured in an opening 33 in the bottom of the cylinder 21. An outlet pipe 35 leads from the side of the cylinder 21, this pipe having an operating valve 36 therein through which water may be delivered through a pipe 37 into a tank 38. Thepump 32 takes water from the tank 38through a pipe 39, the pump being driven from any suitable source of power. An overflow pipe 40 is provided opening into the cylinder 21 slightly above the highest point to which it is desired to raise the plunger, this pipe 40 being connected into the pipe 37. y
A removable block 41 is provided which may be placed upon the top of the piston-22 and. which is held therein by means ,of keys 43 in the top of the piston and slots 44 in the block 41. The valve 36 is opera-ted by a chain 45 attached to a sprocket 46. This sprocket 46 is rigidly secured to a shaft 47 to which a sprocket 48 is also secured. A chain 49 passes over the sprocket 48 and over a sprocket 50. Attached to the chain 49 by means of a clip 51is a rod 52 having a handle 53 on either end thereof. This rod 52 extends the Whole length of the device. The rod 52 rests upon brackets 54 projecting from the channel 12. Mounted on shafts between the channels 12 and 13 are rollers 61 upon which the pipe to be straightened may rest and slide. Sliding on the channels 12 and 13 are restraining members 80, each of these members consisting of a. rectangular frame 81 resting on four wheels 82 which run on the top of the channels 1 2 and 13. Cross members 83 are provided in the frame 81 extending heneaththe channels and cross members 84 are provided in the frame 81 extending above the pipe 70. Removable blocks 85 are placedbetween the members 84 and the top of the pipe;
The method of operation is as follows:
The pipe is placed upon the rollers '61 and is adjusted so that the block 41 of the jack 20 is directly under the bend which it is :de sired to straighten, the. convex side of the bend being downward and in contact with the. block 41. The members 80 are then moved along on the channels 13 into the position shown. in Fig. 2 on either side of the jack 20. The valve 36 is normally open and when so open there is a continuous circulation of water through the pipes 31, 35, 37
and 39 from the pump 32 through the cylinder 21 and the tank 38 and back to the pump. This being a free passage, no pressure is built up and the weight of the piston 22 holds it in its lowest position. Whenever it is desired to exert pressure on a bend in a pipe, the valve 37 is partially closed which can be accomplished anywhere along the side of the device by moving the rod 52. This movement of the rod 52 operates the chain 49 and operates the valve 36 through the chain 45. Partial closing of this valve builds up a pressure beneath the piston which is forced upwardly the amount of this pressure being regulated by the amount of closure of the valve. The pressure exerted. on the pipe may be very great and the convex side of the bend is pushed upwardly tending to straighten it out. Whenever the valve is fully open the pressure is relieved and the piston falls. In cases of small pipes, the members 90 and 91, shown in Fig. 5, may be used in the manner shown in Fig. 6. The block 90 is sufficiently long to go under both of the members 80 when they are pushed up across the jack 20, the members 90 and 91 having grooves therein. The pipe is placed between the two blocks and they are brought together thus forcing the pipe into a straight line.
I claim as my invention:
1. A pipe straightening device comprising: a frame; means for supporting said frame; a hydraulic jack supported upon and adapted to press downwardly upon said frame; a piston for said hydraulic jack adapted to press upwardly through said frame; a series of rollers upon which a pipe may be supported, the axes of said rollers extending across said frame; two restraining members, one situated on one side of said piston and the other situated on the other side of said piston, said restraining members extending across the top of a pipe resting over said piston; wheels resting upon said frame upon which said restraining members are carried: members secured to said restraining members for engaging the under side of said frame and thus preventing said restraining members from being forced upwardly: and means for controlling a fluid pressure in said hydraulic jack.
2. A pipe straightening device comprising: a frame: means for supporting said frame; a hydraulic jack supported upon and adapted to press downwardly upon said frame; a piston for said hydraulic jack adapted to press upwardly through said frame; a series of rollers upon which a pipe may be supported, the axes of said rollers extending across said frame; two restrain ing members, one situated on one side of said piston and the other situated on the other side ofsaid piston, said restraining members extending across the top of a pipe resting over said piston; members secured to said restraining members for engaging the under side of said frame and thus pre venting said restraining members from being forced upwardly; and means for controlling a fluid pressure in said hydraulic jack.
3. A pipe straightening device comprising: a frame: means for supporting said frame; a hydraulic ack supported upon and adapted to press downwardly upon said frame; a piston for said hydraulic jack adapted to press upwardly through said frame; two restraining members, one situated on one side of said piston and the other situated on the other side of said piston. said restraining members extending across the top of a pipe resting over said piston; wheels resting upon said frame upon which said restraining members are carried; members secured to said restraining members for engaging the under side of said frame and thus preventing said restraining members from being forced upwardly; and means for controlling a fluid pressure in said hydraulic jack.
4:. A pipe straightening device compris ing: a frame; means for supporting said frame; a hydraulic jack supported upon and adapted to press downwardly upon said frame; a piston for said hydraulic jack adapted to press upwardly through said frame; two restraining members, one situ ated on one side of said piston and the other situated on the other side of said piston, said restraining members extending across the top of a pipe resting over said piston: members secured to said restraining members for engaging the under side of said frame and thus preventing said restraining members from being forced upwardly: and means for controlling a fluid pressure in said hydraulic jack.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand at Los Angeles, California, this 16th day of May, 1922.
