My invention has relation to improvements in machines for straightening rods and the like, and is designed to provide means of improved character for operating the movable straightening element of the machine. Heretofo-re in the machines commonly used, it is the practice to actuate the movable straightening element by means of a manually operated lever. In such operations, there is no uniformity in the length of the stroke of the straightening element, since this depends upon the skill, attention and accuracy of the operator and is apt to vary widely.
My invention provides a machine of this character in which the vertical straightening element is operated by means of a power cylinder in such a manner as to have a uniform stroke at each operation. Means are also preferably provided whereby the stroke may be varied as may be desirable to suit the particular work in hand.
The nature of my invention will be best understood by reference to the accompanying drawings in which I have shown the preferred embodiment thereof and which will now be described, it being premised, however, that various changes can be made in the details of construction, arrangement and combination of the several parts without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention as defined in the appended claims.
In these drawings, the numeral 2 designates the frame of a straightening machine. 3 designates the usual rolls upon which the rod is placed, and 4 is a rest or support of any usual. or suitable character. The rolls 3 are driven by the usual gearing, such as indicated at 5 in Fig. 1.
6 designates the movable straightening element which is in the form of a wheel or roller capable of being skewed obliquely and which is arranged to act upon the rod to be straig tened intermediate the rolls 3 and rest 4, and while the rod is supported on said rolls and rest. This member 6 is journaled in suitable bearings 7, carried by a slideblock 8, which is mounted for vertical movement in the guides 9 of a vertically movable carriage 10, which, in turn, is arranged to reciprocate on the vertical guides 11 of the frame. The slide-block 8 is arranged to be adjusted vertically to vary the point of beginning and end of the stroke by means of the screw 12, which is shown as carrying a beveled wheel 13, engaged by a beveled gear 14 on a shaft 15, which can be actuated by a hand wheel 16. l
17 designates a double-acting power cylinder having suitable valved connections 18 for the admission of motive fluid thereto. The piston rod 19 of the piston 20 of this cylinder is connected by a link 21 to the toggle links 22. These toggle links are arranged in pairs, the upper pair being pivoted at their upper ends on the pin or shaft 23, supported in frame brackets 24. The lower toggle links are connected at their lower ends to the carriage 10, by means of the pins 25. The toggle links are connected at their meeting ends by the pin 26. The actuating shaft 15 is arranged to extend in between the lower pair of links in the manner which is shown in Fig. 3. Fig. 4 shows the manner in which the link 21 is connected to the pistonrod 19, and also to the intermediate pin or shaft 26.
The entire carriage 10, including the brackets 24 and the guides 11, can be moved longitudinally on suitable guides 27 on the frame, by loosening the edge strips 28 on said guides, thus enabling the position of the straightening element 6 to be adjusted with respect to the rolls 2 and rest 4. Preferably, the cylinder 17 is supported on an extension 24, of the brackets 24, so that when this adjustment is made, all operating parts will move as a unit.
The operation will be readily understood. It will be seen that when the piston 20 is in the position shown in Fig. 2, the toggle links are gradually straightened, bringing the straightening element to its. lowest p0,-
sition; and that with any particular adjustment of the screw 12, this stroke will always be of a fixed length, thereby giving a uni.- form action at each operation. .When the piston moves to the other extremity of its stroke, the toggle links are in broken position and the straightening element is raised away from the work.
The advantages of my invention will be apparent to those familiar with machines of this kind, since it provides a simple and eflicient machine in which the stroke and action of the straightening element is automatically made uniform for each operation.

In a straightening machine, the combination of a vertically movable carriage, a slide block mounted for vertical movement on said carriage, a vertical screw engaging said slide block, double toggles connected to theupper portion of said carriage, a power cylinder operatively connected to the toggles, and actuating gearing for said screw engaging the upper portion of the screw intermediate the point of connection between the double toggles and the said slide block, substantially as described.
