APPARATUS FOR DISINFECTING WATER-CLOSETS AND THE SEATSTHEREOF.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 716,335, dated December 16, 1902.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, FREDERICK GARDNER, of Chicago, in the county of Cook, and in the VState of Illinois, have invented certain new i myinvention for rendering the seat antiseptic.

The object of my invention has been to provide means for rendering a Water-closet sani- Y tary and the closet-seat antiseptic,so that dan ger to a person using the seat of contamination by disease from a person who previously used the same is prevented; and to such ends my invention consists in the device for rendering water-closets and the seats thereof antiseptic, substantially as hereinafter specified.

In carrying my invention into practice I provide, as illustrated in Figs. l and 2, a seat A, which is connected to a base B by hinges C and D. The base is secured to the watercloset bowl E, as by screws passing through openings in such bowl and into the under side of the base. to the under side of the cover. rLow sides are preferably secured to the bottom of the box, and the top g' of the box is hinged to The free end of the cover is provided with a springclip g2, that is adapted to catch on a bead formed on the adjacent side of the box. The cover of the box is perforated or is formed or provided with wirenetting. A felt or other absorbent lsheet or pad H is contained within the box, and such pad is impregnated with any suitable antiseptic material. The box-cover g is preferably provid'ed with strips or Wires g3 on its under surface, and the outer strips are preferably connected together to form a closed figure.

In the use of my device the box-cover g is swung open, the pad H, properly charged with the antiseptic material, is placed within the box, and the box-cover g' is latched in place by the engagement of the clip with the bead. When it is desired to disinfect the Water-closet seat, the cover Fis turned down upon the closet-seat and the disinfecting gases or vapors pass from the pad through the perforations in the box-cover and reach the water-closet seat, which they disinfect. The cover can then be raised and the seat safely used. When the cover is turned down upon the seat, the gases or vapors will pass into the interior of the bowl and disinfect the interior thereof. If desired, the seat can be turned back against the cover and the seat and disinfecting substance thus be brought together. The strips g8 and g3 keep the clothing of a person using the closet from coming into contact with the surface of the box-cover As the outer strips form a closed figure, they serve to prevent the lateral escape of the vapors or gases between the seat and cover.

The strips g3 and g3 can, if desired, be omitted.

In the embodiment of my invention illustrated in Fig. 3 a back I is secured in a substantially vertical position, as to a wall, and a box K, preferably constructed like the box G, before described, is secured thereto. A

lseat L is hinged to the back, preferably by spring-hinges M and M. The springs of the hinges throw the seat against the back when the former is not in use, and thereby cause the seat to be automatically disinfected.

It is obvious that changes which are Within the scope of my invention can be made in the above-illustrated constructions. For instance, the top can be hinged at its upper edge when in the vertical position and can be made to swing down against the bottom of the seat when the seat is in the vertical position, so that the lower surfaces of the seat will be disinfected.`

Having thus described my invention, what I claim is- 1. An apparatus for disinfecting waterclosets and the seats thereof, consisting of the combination of a seat and a sheet-metal box ICO that is fastened or attached to the seat, such box containing an antisepticimpregnated pad, and the cover thereof being perforated, substantially as and for the purpose described.

2. An apparatus for disinfecting Waterclosets and the seats thereof, consisting of the combination of a seat, a sheet-metal box that is hinged to the seat, such box containing an antiseptic-impregnated pad, the cover of the box being perforated, and ribs or strips on such cover, substantially as and for the purpose described.
