HEAD-REST.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N o. 716,209, dated December 16, 1902 Appnntnieatprn7,1902. seiiainmloteev. momen.)
To all whom it may con/@eraf -i Be it known that I, WILLIAM H. ELLIOT'I,l
a citizen of the United States, residin g at Newcastle, in thecounty of Henryrand State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements'in Head-Rests, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to-rimgprovements in headrests particularly adapted for use upon car-seats; and one object of my inventionis the provision of a head-rest which Will be easy of application and removal from a carseat and which Will support the head in the.
most comfortable position.
Another object of my invention is the pro- `consists of a head-rest embodying novel features of construction and combination of parts substantially asdisclosed herein.
Figure 1 represents a perspective View of my head-rest appliedto a car-seat. Fig. 2 represents a similar View of` the head-rest detached, and Fig. 3 represents a vertical central sectional View thereof.
Referring by letter lto the drawings, the letter A designates a yoke or'bail-shaped casting adapted to lit over the back of the carseat and recessed at A to fit the strip on the seat and formed withthe cross-piece B, which rests upon the upper edge of the seat, and also formed with the inclined arm orsupport C, all formed of a single casting, Which insures durability, cheapness, and efficiency. To the rear portion of the yoke is secured the upper end of the dat spring-plate D, having -its lower end formed with the foot E, which and-is also provided With a footII, the yoke and plate bearing upon the front of the seat, and the device is thus properly fitted to the seat.
I preferably provide the head-rest proper of a curvedWood base J, having a suitable cushion K, and to therear of the base I secure a plate L, which is formedwith a guide or cleat M, in which ts the spring-plate N, secured to the inclined arm of the yoke, and this supports the head-rest upon the arm, and to hold the rest at any desired adjust- `ment to suit the user I employ ,the clampingscreW O, which passes through the arm of the yoke and bears against said plate.
It will be understood that myhead-rest is made to fit snugly and neatly upon the seat and presents an attractive and ornamental appearance, and the parts which bear directly upon the seat are covered with material which will hold firmly and` not injure the covering of the seat. l
It is evidentthat my head-rest can be easily taken apart and carried by the traveler in his case or Satchel and when needed can be quickly set up andattached and that it provides a perfect head-rest, and thus Iills a long-feltwant.
I would have it understood that I do not limit myself to details of construction or to the use of my head-rest for car-seats, as it maybe used in any place Where it would perform the function of'ahead-rest.
I claim- The head-rest herein described, consisting of the yoke having the' supporting-arm and the cross-piece to rest on the seat, the depending arm secured to one portion of the yoke, the clam-p carried by the other portion, the spring secured to the supporting-arm, the head-rest having the plate to receive said spring, said rest being secured on said spring, and a screw passing through the arm and engaging the spring to hold the head-rest at the desired adjustment.
In testimony whereof I affix mysignature in presence of two witnesses.
WILLIAM I-I. ELLIOTT. Witnesses: A l
WM. N. MOORE, CHAs. E. RIORDAN.
