NITED TATES FRANK B. SIVEET, OF LAWRENCE, KANSAS.
CAST-OFF FOR SUSPENDERS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N o. 71$,141, dated December 16, 1902.
' Application filed July 3,1902. Serial No. 114,235. (No model.)
e To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, FRANK B. SWEET, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Lawrence, in the county of Douglas and State of Kansas, haveinvented certain new and useful Improvements in Cast-Ofis for Suspenders, of which the following is such a full,
clear, and exact description as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part hereof.
This invention has particular reference to cast ofis for suspenders, and aims to provide a device by which any form of end may be attached to suspenders having a slide or return buckle and which may be readily attached or detached by the wearer when desired, but cannot be accidentally detached.
With these objects in view the invention consists in the novel construction illustrated in the accompanying drawings, as will be hereinafter first fully described, and then specifically pointed out in the claim.
In the drawings just mentioned, Figure 1 is a front elevation of a portion of a suspenders provided with my improvement, and Fig. 2 is an edge view of the same.
The body-straps of the suspenders A may be of any material now commonly employed in the manufacture of these articles and are doubled on themselves at their front ends in the usual manner to be attached to an ordinary return slide-buckle B, as shown. Within the loop thus formed I support an eye or hook 0, consisting of a single strip of wire having its ends inserted between the folds of the suspenders, and thence depending below the same. From the supporting-arms formed by its ends the wire converges sharply downward, and after its branches D meet they are bent outward or forward and then upward and backward, as shown at E, to form a hook,
companying drawings, that I have provided a very simple device by which any form of suspender-end may be attached to the webbing and by which when the suspenders are worn disengagement of the main body of the suspenders and the ends is effectually prevented. It will be readily understood on reference to the drawings that in order to engage or disengage the ring from the hook it is necessary to firstturn' the ring into a horizontal position and then slip it over the end of the hook while in that position. Obviously, then, the ring cannot be accidentally disengaged from the hook when the suspenders are worn, as the body of the wearer serves as a closure for the end of the hook and the upper expanded portion of the hook itself extends over the ring and prevents it rising so far as to be disengaged. Furthermore, the arms D converge so sharply as to meet but a very slight distance below the end of the bodystrap, so that the space between the expanded end H of the cast-off andthe bight or end of the body-strap is just sufficient to permit the passage of the ring F when the same is in a horizontal position, and the pull or weight on the Suspender-end prevents the riugassuming that position while the suspenders are worn. It is also to be noted that inasmuch as the arms D converge sharply there is provided sufficient space on the sides of the hook for the admission of a wide ring, so that no special form of ring or loop is necessary for the attachment of the Suspender-ends.
I am aware that hook-and-eye fasteners for garments have been heretofore constructed with the hooks bent to such an extent as to substantially encircle the shoulder of the eye, and I make no claim to such devices. I am also aware that Wire hooks formed in a single integral structure have been heretofore employed to connect suspender-ends with the body-straps; but I make no broad claim to such a device.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A cast-off for suspenders, having return slide-buckles, consisting of a singleintegral structure presenting supporting arms entering the bight of the suspenders body-straps, side arms converging sharply downward from the outer ends of the supporting-arms and specification in the presence of two subscribmeeting at a point below and close to the ing witnesses.
body-straps, and a hook extending from said meeting point forward, upward and then I FRANK SWEET 5 backward beyond the plane of said side arms, the end of the hook being laterally expanded. In testimony whereof I have signed this Witnesses:
A. V. SHARPE, I. D. STEWART.
