Be it known that I, LOREN C. COX, acitizen of the United States, residing at Quincy, in the countyv of Adams and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Paper-Fastener, of which the following is a spec-ification.

This invention relates to paper-holding clips or fasteners.

The object of the invention is to present a device of the character specified which shall in a ready, feasible, and thoroughly practical manner eect secure assemblage of sheets of paper or the like, the coaction between the clip and the object to which it is attached being such as when once positioned positively to preclude accidental separation; furthermore, to provide a clip having the characteristics specified which may be readily applied to and detached from the object with which it is associated.

With these and other objects in view, as will appear as the nature of theinvention is better understood, the same consists, generally stated, in a clip comprising a clamping element and securing members provided with perforating means in the nature of prongs, which are adapted in use to pierce the superposed sheets of paper or the like, thus to effect the object sought.

The invention consists, fu rther, in the novel construction and combination of parts of a paper-holding clip, as will be hereinafter fully described and claimed.

In the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specication, and in which like numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts, there are illustrated a few of many ways in which the invention may be carried into effect, it being understood that the underlying principle common to each may be otherwise embodied and still be within the scope of the invention.

In the drawings, Figures l, 2, 3, 4, and are views in elevation of iive forms ofV clip, each having a feature common to all. shown in Fig. 9 as applied to a sheet of paper. Fig. 11 is a View in elevation of still another form of clip.

In all of the forms illustrated the features common to each are a resilient loop constituting a clamping element and a pair of arms forming a continuation of the loop and constituting securing members, the terminals of which are provided with prongs, constituting perforating means, which are disposed at an angle to the arms, preferably at right angles thereto, and operate to pierce the article or articles with which the clip is associated. In the forms of embodiment of the invention exhibited in Figs. l, 2, 3, 4, and 5 the feature common to all is the disposition of the perforating means exteriorly of and adjacent to the sides of the clamping member. In the forms of embodiment of the invention exhibited in Figs. 7, 8, and 9 the feature common to all is the disposition of the perforating means interiorly of and adjacent to the sides of the clamping member. In the form of embodiment of the invention exhibited in Fig. 1l the perforating means are disposed eXteriorly of and adjacent to the sides of the clamping member, but lie within bends formed therein.

Referring to the drawings, and to Figs. 1 to 6, inclusive, l designates the loop or clamping element, 2 the securing members, and 3 the perforating means. The securing members constitute a continuation of the members of the loop andare associated therewith by an intermediate' twisted neck 4, the coils of which will depend in number upon the proximity it is desired that the perforating means shall occupy with relation to that terminal of the clamping element which will be the lower one in use; but in order that the perforating means may clear the paper when outward pressure is applied to the neck it is necessary that each securing member project from the side of the neck opposite that from which it started-that is to say, the right-hand securing member must start from the left-hand side of the upper portion of the neck and vthe left-hand member from the right-hand side of the upper portion of the neck; otherwise when pressure is applied to the neck the prongs will be driven into the IOO paper, and thus prevent ready detachment therefrom of the fastener. The perforating prongs or means 3 are formed by bending a length of wire from which the clip is constructed approximately at right angles to the securing members, these prongs being of a length equal to the diameter of the wire, so that when the clip is attached to two sheets of paper, for example, the perforating means will not project above the surface of the paper. In each of the devices shown in Figs. l to G the perforating means are disposed exteriorlyT of and adjacent to the sides of the clamping members. The body portion or clamping element shown in Fig. l is approximately heart-shaped, those shown in Figs. 2 and 3 approximately triangular, that shown in Fig. 4 approximately triangular with hipped top members, and that shown in Fig. 5 approximately keystone-shaped.

In the forms of embodiment of the invention shown in Figs. 7, S, i), and l0 the perforating means are arranged interiorly of and adjacent to the sides of the clamping members, these members in the arrangement shown in Figs. 7 and 8 being somewhat removed from the said sides and that shown in Fig. 9 adjacent or even touching the sides. The clamping element shown in Fig. 7 is in the main approximately circular with an angular top, and that shown in Fig. S approximately keystone-shaped.

In the arrangement shown in Fig. 1l the clamping element is approximately heartshaped and is provided at its sides with two loops or bends 5, disposed within the line of the sides and in which the perforating means are disposed.

It will be obvious that the features of this invention may be embodied in many other ways than that shown and that, if preferred, the perfor-ating means or prongs 3 may be made of greater length than the thickness of the Wire from which the device is constructed, thus to permit of its securely assembling a number of articles the combined thickness of which is greater than that of the diameter of the said Wire, and as this will be readily understood detailed illustration is deemed un necessary.

To associate the clip with a sheet of paper or the like, it is grasped between the first two fingers of the hand and the neck is depressed by the thumb, and when positioned a slight pressure upon the prongs will force these through the paper, and thus securely hold the clip in position. To disconnect the clip from the papers, the nail of the thumb may be inserted between the paper and the securing members, or the neck may be depressed, as may be preferred.

In addition to being employed for securing papers together the device may be utilized for holding together samples of cloth, ribbon, and the like, or it maybe used in many positions not necessary to mention.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. A paper-fastener comprising a clamping element, and securing members associated therewith by a twisted neck, the members projecting from the side of the neck opposite that from which they start.

2. A paper-fastener comprising a clamping element, and securing members provided with terminal perfor-ating means and associated with the clamping element by a twisted neck, the members projecting from the side of the neck opposite that from which they start.

3. A paper-fastener comprising a clamping element, and divergent securing members provided with terminal perforating means disposed adjacent to the sides of the clamping element, said members being associated with the clamping element by a twisted neck and projecting from the side of the neck opposite that from which they start.
