To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOSEPHWHITE, a citizen of the United States,residing at New York, county of New York, and State of New York, haveinvented certain newand useful Improvements in Inking Mechanisms for Printing-Machines, fully described and represented in the following specification and the accompanying drawings, forming a part of the same.
This invention relates to certain improvements in inking apparatus.
In printing-machines it is desirable to have the inking-rollers or other inking apparatus so mounted that they can be given a movement with respect to the path of the form in order to keep them from running in contact with the form when the machine is being run for the purpose of inking up, but to permit them during the printing operation to run in contact with the inkingtable or other inkdistributing means. It is also desirable, particularly in planographic machines, to so arrange the inking mechanism that when the machine is stopped the mechanism will be moved away from the form in order that the rollers may not remain in contact with and stain the printing-surface. In the United States patent granted to Thomas M. North, No. 629,915, dated August 1, 1899, there is shown a mechanism by which the inking-rollers are automatically moved away from the form by a power-driven mechanism whenever the machine is stopped, and ina pending application of Thomas M.North,Serial No. 6, 988, filed March 1, 1900, improvements are shown by which the inking-rollers are automatically moved away-from the form, but permitted to run in contact with theinking-table when the machine is run for the purpose of inking up. In the patent first referred to, however, the power-driven means operate only to move the inking-rollers away from the form when the machine is stopped. When, therefore, the machine is started, the rollers must be brought back into operative position by hand-operated devices. In theapplication referred to the rollers are moved toward and away from the form during the process of inking up through mechanism which is made eifective by means of a hand-operated positioning device. In
the machines as ordinarily constructed these inking mechanisms are large and heavy and the hand manipulation of the inking apparatus, which is necessary in the constructions referred to, requires considerable power and is a laborious one.
It is one of the objects of this invention to provide a machine in which the inking mechanism shall not only be positioned out of contact with the form through powerdriven means, but shall also be moved by powerdriven means from this position into a position where it will contact with the form.
A further object of the invention is to produce a machine in which the devices by which the rollers or other inking mechanism are moved toward and away from the form during the process of inking up shall be made effective through power-driven means.
A further object of the invention is to produce a machine whichshall embody devices for positioning the inking mechanism either in or out of contact with the form and devices for moving the inking mechanism toward and away from the form during the process of inking up, both sets of devices being operated by power-driven means.
A further object of the invention is to produce improved mechanisms by which the foregoing objects shall be attained.
With these and other objects in View the invention consists in certain constructions and in certain parts, improvements, and combinations, as will be hereinafter described, and fully set forth in the claims hereunto appended.
In the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, and in which like characters of reference indicate the same parts, Figure 1 is a side view of so much of a printing-machine as is necessary to illustrate the invention, parts of the I machine being shown in section and the inking-rollers being shown in position to contact with the form. Fig. 2 is a view similar to Fig. 1, the inkingrollers being shown in a position in which ,they will not contact with the form. Fig. 3
is a View similar to Figs. 1 and 2, with the parts shown in the position which they occupy in order that the rollers may be moved toward and away from the form during the process of inking up. Fig. 4 is an end view of the stopping and starting mechanism of the machine looking at it in the direction of the arrow 4 in Fig. 1. Figs. 5, 6, 7, 8, and 9 are detail views.
The machine which has been chosen to illustrate the invention is a rotary planographic machine printing in a single color. It is to be understood, however, that the invention is applicable in some of its features to machines which do not. employ planographic printing-surfaces and to machines of other than the rotary type.
Referring to the drawings, 1 indicates the frame of the machine, which may be of any ordinary form. The frame serves to support an impression-cylinder 2, mounted in bearings of any usual or desired form, and a cooperating form-carrier, which in the machine shown consists of a cylinder 3, also mounted in bearings of any usual or desired form. The main shaft of the machine is indicated at 4. Thisshaftoperatesto drive the couple through any desired train of gearing. This train of gearing, however, having no relation to the present invention is not shown. The inking mechanism may be of any usual or desired form. As shown, it includes a series of formrollers 5, which receive their ink from a fountain of any usual or desired form through the agency of the usual ductor, distributing, and vibrating rolls. The form-rollers themselves may be mounted in any usual or desired manner. Preferably, however, supports 6 are provided. As shown, there are two sets of form-rollers, and consequently two sets of supports, the supports of each set being located on opposite sides of the machine. Only one support of each set is shown, however, the other supports of the sets being duplicates of those illustrated. The supports are provided with any usual form of hearings in which the ink-rolls are mounted, said bearings being indicated at 7.
Various means may be employed for giving the ink-rollers a movement by which they are positioned so that they will run either in or out of contact with the form. Preferably, however, the supports 6 will be constructed as slides and arranged to move in suitable ways in the frame of the machine. By giving the supports the movement referred to it is obvious that the inking-rollers will be carried toward and away from the path of the form. Any suitable means maybe employed for giving the slides the movement referred to. As shown, each of the slides is provided with a pin 8, said pins bearing on cams oriuclined surfaces 9, which are formed on the ends of extensions 10 on the arms 11 of hellcrank levers 11 12, said levers (of which there are preferably two, one on each side of the machine) being pivoted on the shaft of the form-carrier 3. It is obvious that by swinging the bell-crank levers 11 12 around the supporting-shaft a movement of the slides 6 will be produced which will cause the inkingrollers to move toward or away from the path of the form. While the cams 9 .might be so constructed as to move the slides positively in both directions, the construction will preferably be as shownthat is, the cams will move the slides in one direction and they will be moved by gravity in the opposite direction. While, furthermore, the construction described constitutes an efiective positioning device, it is to be understood that any other suitable form of positioning device may be substituted therefor.
Means are provided whereby the positioning devices just described are positively moved through power-driven means to effect both movements of the inking mechanism. These means may be varied widely in form and construction. As shown, however, the arm 12 of each bell-crank 11 12 is provided with a rack 13, which is engaged by a similar rack 14, formed on one of the arms 15 of a bell-crank lever 15 16, said lever being pivoted on a shaft 17, which extends across the machine from side to side, it being understood, as before indicated, that the positioning devices and the means for operating them so far described are duplicated on the opposite side of the machine, except that on the opposite side of the machine an arm similar to the arm 15 and secured to the shaft 17 will take the place of the bell-crank 15 16. The arm 16 of the bell-crank 15 16 carries a stud 18, which may be engaged by either of two hooks or recesses 19 20, formed on an operating-bar 21, which is arranged to be given a generally longitudinal movement by means now to be described. While the means for giving the bar its longitudinal movement may be varied within wide limits in the construction shown, this bar is connected at its inner end to a crank-pin 22, ,mounted on agearwheel 23, which is supported on a stud 24, suitably secured to the frame of the machine. As the gear-wheel 23is rotated through mechanism to be hereinafter described, it will be seen that the bar will be given thelongitudinal movement referred to. It will be further seen that a half-revolution of the gear23 will operate to give the bar 21 its complete movement in one direction, and the construction described is of such a character that a movement of the bar in one direction will operate to give the movement desired to the inking mechanism-that is to say, it will move the rollers to a position where they will be either in or out of contact with the form.
The mechanism so far described may be arranged to be operated by any suitable motor mechanism, which may be a part of or independent of the machine. Inasmuch, however, as the loose pulley of the machine affords a convenient source of power for driving this mechanism, said pulley will preferably be utilized for this purpose. In the construction shown the gear-wheel 23 is in mesh with a small gear 25, mounted on a short shaft 26, which extends through the frame, the relation of the gears 23 25 being preferably such that one revolution of the gear produces a half-revolution of the gear 23. The shaft 26 (see Figs. 6, 7, and 8) is provided on its inner end with a worm-gear 27, which is arranged to be driven by a worm 28, mounted on a worm-shaft 29. The other end of the shaft 29 is provided with a bevel-gear 30, which is in mesh with a similar gear 31 on a shaft 32, which is supported in suitable bearings in the frame of the machine. The shaft 32 carries a gear 33, which is in mesh with another gear 34. This gear 34 is driven from a gear 35, which is secured to the loose pulley 36, said pulley being arranged, as usual, alongside the driving-pulley 37. As the driv ing-belt 38 is shifted from the driving to the loose pulleyit is obvious that the gear-wheel 23 will rotate with the train of mechanism before described, and the inking mechanism with the connections extending thereto from the gear 23 will receive a movement.
Inasmuch as a half-rotation of the gearwheel 23-is all that is necessary to produce a movement of the inking mechanism in either direction sufficient to position it in or out of contact with the form, it is necessary to interrupt the action of the power-driven devices thus far described as soon as the gear 23 has made a half-revolution. Various devices may be provided by which the operation of the driving mechanism is interrupted in the manner referred to. In the construction shown, however, the shaft 29 is arranged to swing so as to bring its worm 28 into and out of mesh with the worm-gear 27. To this end the outer end of the shaft is carried in a swivel-bearing 39, mounted on astud 40, passing through one of the arms 41 of a bell-crank lever 41 42, which is pivoted on a stud 43, mounted in the frame oftthe machine. The arm 42 of the bell-crank lever is preferably provided with a bowl 44, said bowl being arranged to run on a disk 45, which is provided with a notch 46, as is clearly shown in Figs. 5 and 8. When the bowl 44 is in the notch 46, the parts assume the position indicated in Fig. 8that is to say, the Worm 28 is out of mesh with the worm-gear 27. When, however, the bowl is running on the unnotched periphery of the disk, the parts are in the position illustrated in Fig. 6-that is to say, the worm 28 is engaging the worm-gear 27. The notched disk 45 is mounted on the shaft 26, before referred to as carrying the worm-gear 27, the normal position of the parts being that illustrated in Fig. 8. Suitable means are provided for disengaging the bowl 44 from the notch 46 in the disk 45. While these means may be varied widely in the construction shown, there is provided a lifter 47, which consists of a plate, said lifter-plate being pivoted on the shaft 26, which carries the notched disk 45. This lifter-plate is preferably shaped as shown-that is to say, it is generally somewhat smaller in diameter than the disk 45 and is provided with an operating end 48, which is sufficiently large to cover the notch 46 in the disk 45 when the plate is rocked to proper position. It is apparent that when the disk is rocked through suitable means the bowl 44 will be lifted out of the notch in the bowl and the bell-crank 41 42 rocked so as to throw the shaft 29 into such position that the worm 28 will engage with the gear 27, the position which the parts then assume being shown in Fig. 6.
The means by which the disengaging devices are operated may be varied widely, and
in the present machine two sets of such operating means are shown. In order to place the lifting mechanism under the control of the operator, so that the rolls may be lifted at any time whether the machine is running or not, a suitable trip is provided, which may be actuated by the foot of the operator. This trip in the construction shown consists of an ordinary pivoted lever 49, pivoted at 50 to the frame of the machine. This lever has the usual foot-plate 51 on one end and at its other end has a fork 52, which takes under a collar 53 on a rod 54, which is pivoted to the plate 47 at 55. It will be seen that when the operator steps on the plate 51 the plate 47 will be rocked and the bell-crank 41 42 operated.
As has been before indicated, the mechanism is so arranged that the bowl 44 drops into the notch 45 in the disk 46, and thus disengages the worm-gear-27 and the worm 28 as soon as the gear 25 has made one revolution that is, when the gear 23 has made a half-revolution. In order to insure that the lifterplate may not be in such a position as to interfere with the dropping of the bowl 44 into the notch 45, means are preferably provided for returning the plate. In the construction shown these means consist of a spring which surrounds the rod 54. This spring bears at one end against a collar 57 and at the other end against a puppet 58, fixed to the frame, through which the rod 54 moves. As soon, therefore, as the operator takes his foot off the plate 51, which he will dodirectly the lifting mechanism has begun to operate, the spring 56 will return the lifter-plate to its normal position-that is, the position shown in Figs. 5 and 8-so that the bowl 44 is free to drop into the notch 46 when the notch comes under it.
A second means for operating the lifterplate is provided in order to insure that the inking mechanism will be moved away from the form when the machine is stopped. To this end, therefore, a connection is established between the machine-stopping devices and the disengaging devices. The machine-stopping devices may be of any suitable form; but, as shown, they consist of an ordinary belt-shifter 60, which is pivoted to the under side of the machine-platform and is operated through the medium of a link 61 from a shifting-lever 62, pivoted at 63 to the frame of the machine. The connections by which the beltshifter operates the disengaging mechanism may be'of any suitable description. As shown,
the lever 62 has connected thereto a link 64, secured to one of the arms of a bell-crank lever 05 (36, said lever being pivoted on a stud 67. The arm 66 of the lever has connected to it a link (58, which is connected at its other end to one of the arms 09 of an ordinary pawlcarrier, which is pivoted on the shaft 26. The other arm of the pawl-carrier bears a pawl 71, which is arranged to take into a notch 72 in the lifter-plate 1-7. \Vhen, therefore, the lever 62 is operated, the lifter-plate will be rocked to disengage the bowl 44 of the bellcrank from the notch 4-6 and cause the worm 28 to drive the worm-gear 27.
It is desirable for the reasons before stated to permit the lifter-plate to return, so that the bowl it will drop into the notch 46 it comes beneath it. To this end the disk 15 is provided with a pin, which as the disk rotates takes under the pawl 71 and lifts it out of the notch '2. As soon as the pawl is disengaged from the notch the spring 56, which has been placed under tension by the movement of the lifter-plate 17, returns the plate to its normal position.
In addition to the positioning movement of the inking mechanism-that is,the movement by which it is carried away from or toward the form and retained in one of these two positions-it is also desirable to give the mechanism a reciprocating movement toward and away from the path of the form once for each cycle of movement of the form-carrier during the time when the machine is running for the purpose of inking up. The means by which the inking mechanism is given its reciprocating movement foreach cycle of movement of the form carrier may be varied widely. In the present construction the extensions 10 of the arm 11 of each bell-crank lever 11 12 carry toes 73, which when the extensions are properly positioned will act on the studs 8, which are secured to the slides (5. The toes 73 are carried on short shafts 74, which are mounted in the extensions, said shafts having secured to them arms 75,which are preferably provided with rolls 76. These rolls 76 are arranged to be acted upon by a cam '77, which is mounted on or secured to the shaft of the form-carrier 3. The toes 73 are located at one end of the cam-surfaces 9 before referred to. So long, therefore, as the bell-cranks 11 12 are not given a movement sufficient to carry the studs 8 off the inclined surfaces 9 the toes will operate idly and will not, therefore, produce any movement of the slides 6. When, however, it is desired to give the slides a reciprocating movement for each revolution of the form-carrier, the bell-cranks 11 12 are given a movement which is sufficient to carry the toes 73 under the pins 8 on the slides. \Vhile the means for varying the movement of the bell-cranks may be of any suitable description, in the construction shown the two hooks 1.) and 20 on the bar 21 are provided for this purpose. When the hook 20 is engaging the pin 18 on the arm 16 of the bell-crank 15 16, the movement imparted to the levers 11 12 is such as to keep the inclined surfaces 9 of the extensions 10 under the studs 8. When, however, it is desired to bring the studs over the liftingtoes, the bar 21 is lifted, so as to disengage the hook 20 from the pin 18, and the gear 23 through the means before described is caused to make a half-revolution. The bar 21 is now positioned so that the hook 19 takes over the pin 18. \Vhen this has been done, the gear 23 is caused to make another half-revolution, which movement causes the bell-cranklevers 11 12 to move sufficiently, so that the pins 8 come over the lifting-toes, the position of the parts just described being illustrated'in Fig. 3. As long as the parts remain in this position the cam '77 will operate the toes to lift the slides once for each revolution of the form-carrier. It will be understood, ofcourse, that the high part of the cam will be arranged with relation to the form, so that the inking mechanism is lifted during the time when the form is passing under the inking mechanism.
The operation of the mechanism will be clearly understood from the description which has been before givenn It may be remarked, however, that the belt-shifter is preferablyso arranged that the belt is never completely off the loose pulley. In other words, when the machine is running the belt will preferably be not only on the fast pulley, but will be over on the loose pulley to the extent of an inch or two. By so arranging the belt the loose pulley will always be running, and consequently will provide the power by which the inking mechanism may be operated at any time whether the machine is running or not.
It will be further understood that the mechanism before described not only operates to give the in king-rollers the desired movement, but the gear-driven crank-operating wheel 23 for the bar 21 is held from movement after it has made a half-revolution, so that the several parts after having received their movement are firmly locked in position. When, for instance, the parts have been moved into the position shown in Fig. 3, they are locked in this position, andthey can not shift or slip until the wheel 23 has been again operated in the manner before described.
\Vhile the mechanism which has been described is an eiliective one for carrying out the invention, it is to be understood that the invention is not limited thereto. It is to be also understood that certain features of the invention are capable of use independently of other features and that such use is contemplated.
\Vhat is claimed is 1. In a printing-machine, the combination with a form-carrier, of an inking mechanism therefor, devices for positioning said mechanism so that it may when the form-carrier is in operative position be either in or'out of contact with the form, power-driven means for operating the positioning devices to place the inking mechanism in contact with the form, and automatic means for interrupting the operation of said power-driven means when the inking mechanism is in position, substantially as described.
2. In a printing-machine, the combination with a form-carrier, of an inking mechanism therefor, devices for positioning said mechanism so that it may be either in or out of contact with the form, power-driven means for operating the positioning devices to place the inking mechanism in contact with the form without disturbing the position of the formcarrier, and automatic means for interrupting the operation of said power-driven means when the inking mechanism is in position, substantially as described.
3. In a printing-machine, the combination with a form-carrier, of an inking mechanism therefor, devices for positioning said mechanism so that it may when the form-carrier is in operative position be either in or out of contact with the form, power-driven means for operating the positioning devices to place the inking mechanism in either position, and automatic means for interrupting the operation of the power-driven means after the inking mechanism has been caused to assume either position, substantially as described.
4. In a printing-machine, the combination with a form-carrier, of an inking mechanism therefor, devices for positioning said mechanism so that it may be either in or out of contact with the form, power-driven means for operating the positio'ning devices to place the inking mechanism in either position without disturbing the position of the form-carrier, and automatic means for interruping the operation of the power-driven means afterthe inking mechanism has been caused to assume either position, substantially as described.
5. In a printing-machine, the combination with a form-carrier, of an inking mechanism therefor, devices for positioning said mechanism so that it may when the form-carrieris in operative position be either in or out of contact with the form, power-driven means for operating the positioning devices to place the inking mechanism in either position, said means being constructed to lock the positioning devices when theinking mechanism is in either position, and automatic means for interrupting the operation of the power-driven means after the inking mechanism has been caused to assume either position, substantially as described.
6. In a printing-machine, the combination with a form-carrier, of an inking mechanism therefor, devices for positioning said mechanism so that it may be either in or out of contact with the form, power-driven means for operating the positioning devices to place the inking mechanism in either position, said means being constructed to lock the positioning devices when the inking mechanism is in either position without disturbing the position of the form-carrier, and automatic means for interrupting the operation of the powerdriven means after theinking mechanism has been caused to assume either position, substantially as described.
7. In a printing-machine, the combination with a form-carrier, of an inking mechanism therefor, supports in which the inking mechanism is mounted, devices for positioning said supports so that the inking mechanism may when the form-carrier is in operative position be either in or out of contact with the form, power-driven means for operating said devices so that the supports will place the inking mechanism in contact with the form, and automatic means for interrupting the operation of said power-driven means when the inking mechanism is in position, substantially as described,
8. In a printing-machine, the combination with a form-carrier, of an inking mechanism therefor, supports in which the inking mechanism is mounted, devices for positioning said supports so that the inking mechanism may be either in or out of contact with the form, power-driven means for operating said devices so that the supports will place the inking mechanism in contact with the form with out disturbing the position of the form-carrier, and automatic means for interrupting the operation of said power-driven means when the inking mechanism is in position, substantially described.
9. In a printing-machine, the combination lco with a form-carrier, of an inking mechanism therefor, supports in which the inking mechanism is mounted, devices for positioning said supports so that the inking mechanism may when the form-carrier is in operative position be either in or out of contact with the form, power-driven means for operating said dovices to position the supports to place the ink-/ ing mechanism in either position, and automatic means for interrupting the operation no of the power-driven means after the inking mechanism has been caused to assume either position, substantially as described.
10. In a printing-machine, the combination with a form-carrier,.of an inking mechanism therefor, supports in which the inking mechanism is mounted, devices for positioning said supports so that the inking mechanism may be either in or out of contact with the form,
power-driven means for supporting said devices to position the supports to place the inking mechanism in either position without disturbing the position of the form-carrier, and
automatic means for interrupting the opera tion of the power-driven means after the ink- 'ing mechanism has been caused to assume either position, substantially as described.
11. In a printing-machine, the combination with a form-carrier, of an inking mechanism therefor, supports in which the inking mech- 13o anism is mounted, devices for positioning said supports so that the inking mechanism may when the form-carrier is in operative position be either in or out of contact with the form,
power-driven means for operating said devices to position the supports to place the inking mechanism in either position, said means being constructed to lock the positioning de- 5 vices when the inking mechanism is in either position, and automatic means for interrupting the operation of the power-driven means after the inking mechanism has been caused to assume either position, substantially as de- I scribed.
12. In a printing'machine, the combination with a form-carrier, of an inking mechanism therefor, supports in which the inking mechanism is mounted, devices for positioning said supports so that the inking mechanism may be either in or out of contact with the form, power-driven means for operating said devices to position the supports to place the inking mechanism in either position without disturbing the position of the form-carrier, and automatic means for interrupting the operation of the power-driven means after the inking mechanism has been caused to as sume either position, substantially as described.
13. In a printing-machine, the combination with a form-carrier, of an inking mechanism therefor, devices for positioning said mechanism so that it may be either in or out of con- 0 tact with the form, means driven from the loose pulleyof the machine for operating the positioning devices to place the inking mechanism in contact with the form, and means for interrupting the operation of said powerdriven means when the inking mechanism is in position, substantially as described.
14. In a printing-machine, the combination with a form-carrier, of an inking mechanism therefor, devices for positioning the inking 4o mechanism so that it may be either in or out of contact with the form, means driven from the loose pulley of the machine for operating the positioning devices to place the inking mechanism in either position, and means for 5 interrupting the operation of the powerdriven means after the inking mechanism has been caused to assume either position, substantially as described.
15. In a printing-machine, the combination with a form-carrier, of an inking mechanism therefor, devices for positioning said mechanism so that it may be either in or out of contact with the form, means driven from the loose pulley of the machine for operating the positioning devices to place the inking mechanism in either position, said means being constructed to lock the positioning devices when the inking mechanism is in either position, and means for interrupting the operation of the power-driven meansafter the inking mechanism has been caused to assume either position, substantially as described.
16. In a printing-machine, the combination with a form-carrier, of an inking mechanism therefor, means for effecting a reciprocating movement of the inking mechanism toward and away from the form-carrier for each cycle of movement thereof, and power-driven means for rendering the reciprocating means operative and inoperative, substantially as described.
17. In a printing-machine, the combination with a form-carrier, of an inking mechanism therefor, means for effecting a reciprocating movement of the inking mechanism toward and away from the form-carrier for each cycle of movement thereof, a device which in one position renders said means operative and in another position inoperative, and power-driven means for moving said device into and out of both positions, substantially as described.
18. In a printing-machine, the combination with a form-carrier, of an inking mechanism therefor, means for effecting a reciprocating movement of the inking mechanism toward and away from the form-carrier for each cycle of movement thereof, a device which in one position renders said means operative and in another position inoperative, and powerdriven means for moving said device into and out of both positions, said means being constructed to lock said device in eitherposition, substantially as described.
19. In a printing-machine,the combination with a form-carrier, of an inking mechanism therefor, means for efiecting a reciprocating movement of the inking mechanism toward and away from the form-carrier for each cycle of movement thereof, a device which in one position renders said means operative and in another position inoperative, power-driven means for moving said device into and out of both positions, and means for interrupting the operation of the power-driven means after the positioning device has completed either of its movements, substantially as described.
20. In a printing-machine, the combination with a form-carrier, of an inking mechanism therefor, means for elfecting a reciprocating movement of the inking mechanism toward and away from the form-carrier for each cycle of movement thereof, a device which in one position renders said means operative and in another position inoperative, power-driven means for moving said device into and out of both positions, said means being constructed to lock said device in either position, and means for interrupting the operation of the power-driven means after the positioning device has completed either of its movements, substantially as described.
21. In a printing-machine, the combination with a form-carrier, of an inking mechanism therefor, supports in which the inking mechanism is mounted, means for effecting a reciprocating movement of the supports toward and away from the form-carrier for each cycle of movement thereof, and power-driven means for rendering the reciprocating means operative, substantially as described.
22. In a printing-machine, the combination with a form-carrier, of an inking mechanism IIO therefor, supports in which the inking mechanism is mounted, means for effecting a reciprocating movement of the supports toward and away from the form-carrier for each cycle of movement thereof, and power-driven means for rendering the reciprocating means operative, said means being constructed to lock said reciprocating means in position,substantially as described.
23. In a pri1'1ting-machine,the combination with a form-carrier, of an inking mechanism therefor, supports in which the inking mechanism is mounted, means for effecting a reciprocating movement of the supports toward and away from the form-carrier for each cycle of movement thereof, and powet driven means for rendering the reciprocating means operative and inoperative, substantially as described.
24. Ina printing-machine, the combination with a form-carrier, of an inking mechanism therefor, supports in which the inking mechanism is mounted, means for effecting a reciprocating movement of the supports toward and away from the form-carrier for each cycle of movement thereof, and power-driven means for rendering the reciprocating means operative and inoperative, said power-driven means being constructed to lock said operating means in either position, substantially as described.
25. In a printing-machine, the combination with a form-carrier, of an inking mechanism therefor, supports in which the inking mechanism is mounted, means foreffectinga reciprocating movement of the supports toward and away from the form-carrier for each cycle of movement thereof, a device which in one position renders said means operative and in another position inoperative, and powerdriven means for moving said device into and out of both positions, substantially as described.
26. In a printing-machine, the combination with a form-carrier, of an inking mechanism therefor, supports in which the inking mechanism is mounted, means for effecting a reciprocating movement of the supports toward and away from the form-carrier for each cycle of movement thereof, a device which in one position renders said means operative and in another position inoperative, and powerdriven means for moving said device into and out of both positions, said means being constructed to lock said device in either position, substantially as described.
27. In a printing-machine, the combination with a form-carrier, of an inking mechanism therefor, supports in which the inking mechanism is mounted, means for effecting a reciprocating movement'of the supports toward and away from the form-carrier for each cycle of movement thereof, a device which in one position renders said means operative and in another, position inoperative, power-driven means for moving said device into and out of both positions, and means for interrupting the operation of the power-driven means after the positioning device has completed either of its movements, substantially as described.
28. In a printing-machine, the combination with a form-carrier, of an inking mechanism therefor,'supports in which the inking mechanism is mounted, means for effectinga reciprocating movement of the supports toward and away from the form-carrier for each cycle of movement thereof, a device which in one position renders said means operative and in another position inoperative, power-driven means for moving said device into and out of both positions, said means being constructed to lock said device in eitherposition, and means for interrupting the operation of the power-driven means after the positioning device has completed either of its movements, substantially as described.
29. In aprinting-machine, the combination with a form-carrier, of an inking mechanism therefor, means for positioning said mechanism so that it may be either in or out of contact with the form, means for elfecting a reciprocating movement of the inking mechanism toward and away from the form-carrier for each cycle of movement thereof, and power-driven means for producing the movements of the positioning means and for rendering the reciprocating means operative and inoperative, substantially as described.
30. In a printing-machine, the combination with a form-carrier, of an inking mechanism therefor, means for positioning said mechanism so that it may be either in or out of contact with the form, means for effecting a reciprocating movement of the inking mechanism toward and away from the form-carrier for each cycle of movement thereof, and power-driven means for producing the movements of the positioning means and for rendering the reciprocating means operative and inoperative, said power-driven means being constructed to lock either set of means in either posit-ion, substantially as described.
31. In a printing-machine, the combination with a form-carrier, of an inking mechanism therefor, supports in which the inking mech anism is mounted, means for positioning said supports so that the inking mechanism may be either in or out of contact with the form, means for. eifecting a reciprocating movement of the supports toward and away from the form-carrier for each cycle of movement thereof, and power-driven means for producing the movements of the positioning means and for rendering the reciprocating means operative and inoperative, substantially as described.
32. In a printing-machine, the combination with a form-carrier, of an inking mechanism therefor, supports in which the inking mechanism is mounted, means for positioning said supports so that the inking mechanism may be either in or out of contact with the form, means for effecting a reciprocating movement of the supports toward and away from the form-carrier for each cycle of movement thereof, and power-driven means for producing the movements of the positioning means and for rendering the reciprocatingmeans operative and inoperative, said power-driven means being constructed to lock the positioningmeans or the reciprocating means in either of their positions, substantially as described.
In a printing-machine, the combination with a form-carrier, of an inking mechanism therefor, means for positioning said mechanism so that it may be either in or out of contact with the form, means for elfecting a reciprocating movement of the inking mechananism toward and away from the form-carrier for each cycle of movement thereof, power-driven means for producing the movements of the positioning means and for rendering the reciprocating means operative and inoperative, and means for interrupting the operation of the pow r-driven means after either movement of the positioning means, or after the reciprocating means have been rendered operative or inoperative, substantially as described.

In aprinting-machine, the combination with a form-carrier, of an inking mechanism therefor, means for positioning said mechanism so that it may be either in or out of contact with the form, means for effecting a reciprocating movement of the inking mechanism toward and away from the form-carrier for each cycle of movement thereof, powerdriven means for producing the movements of the positioning means and for rendering the reciprocating means operative and inoperative, said power-driven means being constructed to lock the positioning means and the reciprocating means in either position, and means for interrupting the operation of the power-driven means after either movement of the positioning means, or after the reciprocating means have been rendered operative or inoperative, substantially as described.
35. In a printing-machine, the combination with a form-carrier, of an inking mechanism therefor, supports in which the inking mechanism is mounted, means for positioning said supports so that the inking mechanism may be either in or out of contact with the form, means foreffecting a reciprocating movement of the supports toward and away from the form-carrier for each cycle of movement thereof, power-driven means for producing the movements of the positioning means and for rendering the reciprocating means operative and inoperative, and means for interrupting the operation of the power-driven means after either movement of the positioning means, or after the reciprocating means have been rendered operative or inoperative, substantially as described.
In aprinting-machine, the combination with a form-carrier, of an inking mechanism therefor, supports in which the inking mechr l l l anism is mount-ed, means for positioning said supports so that the inking mechanism may be either in or out of contact with the form, means for effecting a reciprocating movement of the supports toward and away from the form-carrier for each cycle of movement thereof, power-driven means for producing the movements of the positioning means and for rendering the reciprocating means operative and inoperative, said power-driven means being constructed to lock the positioning means and the reciprocating means in either position, and means for interrupting the operation of the power-driven means after either movement of the positioning means or after the reciprocating means have been rendered operative or inoperative, substantially as described.
37. In a printing-machine, the combination with a rotating form-carrier, of an inking mechanism therefor, devices for positioning said mechanism so that it may be either in or out of contact with the form, power-driven means for operating said devices to position the inking mechanism in contact with the form, and means controlled by the operator and operative whether the machine is running or stopped for throwing said powerdriven means into operation, substantially as described.
38. In a printing-machine, the combination with a rotating form-carrier, of an inking mechanism therefor, devices for positioning said mechanism so that it maybe either in or out of contact with the form, power-driven means for operating said devices to position the inking mechanism in contact with the form, said means being constructed to lock said positioning devices in either position, and means controlled by the operator and operative whether the machine is running or stopped for throwing said power-driven means into operation, substantially as described.
39. In aprinting-machine, the combination with a rotating form-carrier, of an inking mechanism therefor, devices for positioning said mechanism so that it may be either in or out of contact with the form, power-driven means for operating said devices to produce either position of the inking mechanism, and two sets of means controlled by the operator for throwing said power-driven means into operation one of said sets of means being operated when the machine is stopped, substantially as described.

In a printing-machine, the combination with a rotating form-carrier, of an inking mechanism therefor, devices for positioning said mechanism so that it may be either in or out of contact with the form, power-driven means for operating said devices to produce either position of theinkiug mechanism, two sets of means one of which is operated when the machine is stopped controlled by the operator for throwing said power-driven means into operation, and means for automatically throwing the power-driven means out of operareciprocating movement of the inking mech-.
anism toward and away from the form-carrier for each cycle of movement thereof, powerdriven means for rendering the reciprocating means operative, and means controlled by the operator for throwing the power-driven means into operation, substantially as described.
42. In a printing-machine, the combination with a rotating form-carrier, of an inking mechanism therefor, means for effecting a reciprocating movement of the inking mechanism toward and away from the form-carrier for each cycle of movement thereof, powerdriven means for rendering the reciprocating means operative, means controlled by the operator for throwing the power-driven means into operation, and means for automatically throwing the power-driven means out of operation after the inking'mechanism has been positioned, substantially as described.
43. In a printing-machine, the combination with a rotating form-carrier, of an inking mechanism therefor, means for efiecting a reciprocating movement of the inking mechanism toward and away from the form-carrier for each cycle of movement thereof, powerdriven means for rendering the reciprocating means operative and inoperative, and means controlled by the operator for throwing the power-driven means into operation, substantially as described.
44. In a printing-machine, the combination with a rotating form-carrier, of an inking mechanism therefor, means for effecting a reciprocating movement of the inking mechanism toward and away from the form-carrier for each cycle of movement thereof, powerdriven means for rendering the reciprocating means operative and inoperative, means controlled by the operator for throwing the powerdriven means into operation, and means for automatically throwing the power driven means out of operation after the inking mechanism has been positioned, substantially as described.
45. In a printing-machine, the combination with a form-carrier, of an inking mechanism therefor, means for giving the inking mechanism a movement toward and away from the path of movement of the form-carrier, a power mechanism for operating said means,machinestopping devices, means actuated from the machine-stopping devices for throwing the power mechanism into operation, and means independent of the stopping mechanism and under the control of the operator for also throwing the power mechanism into operation, substantially as described.
46. In a printing-machine, the combination with a form-carrier, of an inking mechanism therefor, means for giving the inking mechanism a movement toward and away from the path of movement of the form-carrier, apower mechanism for operatingsaid means,machinestopping devices, means actuated from the machine-stopping devices for throwing the power mechanism into operation, means independent of the stopping mechanism and under the control of the operator for throwing the power mechanism into operation, and means for automatically throwing the power mechanism out of operation when the movement of the inking mechanism is completed, substantially as described.
47. In a printing-machine, the combination with a form-carrier, of an inking mechanism therefor, means. for effecting a movement of the inking mechanism toward and away from the form-carrier for each cycle of movement thereof, a positioning device for rendering said reciprocating means efiective, powerdriven means for operating the positioning device, and means for controlling the operation of the power-driven means, substantially as described.
48. In a printing-machine, the combination with a form-carrier, of an inking mechanism therefor, means for effecting a movement of the inking mechanism toward and away from the form-carrier for each cycle of movement thereof, a positioning device for rendering said reciprocating means effective, powerdriven means for operating the positioning device, means under the control of the operator for throwing the power-driven means into operation, and means for automatically throwing the power-driven means out of operation when the positioning device is in proper position, substantially as described. 49. In a printing-machine, the combination with a form-carrier, of an inking mechanism therefor, means for effecting a movement of the inking mechanism toward and away from the form-carrier for each cycle of movement thereof, a positioning device for rendering said reciprocating means effective, powerdriven means for operating the positioning device, said means, being constructed to lock the positioning device after it has been operated, means under the control of the operator for throwing the power-driven means into operation, and means for automatically throwing the power-driven means out of op eration when the positioning device is in proper position, substantially as described.
50. In a printing-machine, the combination with a rotating form-carrier, of an inking mechanism therefor, a positioning device for positioning the inking mechanism in or out of contact with the form, means made effective by the positioning device for giving the ation, and means for automatically interrupting the action of the power-driven means, substantially as described.
51. In a printing-machine, the combination with a rotating form-carrier, of an inking mechanism therefor, a positioning device for positioning the inking mechanism in or out of contact with the form, means made effective by the positioning device for giving the inking mechanism a reciprocating movement toward and away from the form for each cycle of movement of the form-carrier, powerdriven means for operating the positioning device, said means being constructed to lock the positioning device after it has been operated, means controlled by the operator for throwing the power-driven means into operation, and means for automaticallyinterrupting the action of the power-driven means, substantially as described.
52. In aprinting-machine, the combination with a rotating form-carrier, of an inking mechanism therefor, supports in which the inking mechanism is mounted, positioningarms operating to effect a movement of the supports toward and away from the path of the form-carrier, lifting devices operating to give the supports a movement toward and away from the path of the form-carrier for each cycle of movement of the form-carrier, said lifting devices being carried in part by the positioning-arms, power-driven means for operating the positioning-arms, means under the control of the operator for throwing the powerdriven means into operation, and means for automaticallyinterrupting the operation of the power-driven means after the positioning-arms have been moved, substantially as described.
53. In a printing-machine, the combination with a rotating form-carrier, of an inking mechanism therefor, supports in which the inking mechanism is mounted, positioningarms operating to efiect a movement of the supports toward and away from the path of the form-carrier, lifting devices operating to give the supports a movement toward and away from the path of the form-carrier for each cycle of movement of the form-carrier, said lifting devices being carried in part by the positioning-arms, power-driven means for operating the positioning-arms, said means being constructed to lock the arms in position, means under the control of the operator for throwing the power-driven means into operation, and means for automatically interrupting the operation of the power-driven means after the positioning-arms have been moved, substantially as described.
54. In a printing-machine, the combination with a rotating form-carrier, of slides, an inking mechanism mounted therein, bell-crank levers having cam extensions, means on the slides with which the extensions engage, lifters carried on the extensions, cams for operating the lifters, power-driven means for operating the levers, means under the control of the operator for throwing the power-driven means into operation, and means for automatically interrupting the operation of the powerdriven means after the lovers have been moved, substantially as described.
55. In a printing-machine, the combination with a rotating form-carrier, of slides, an inking mechanism mounted therein, bell-crank levers having cam extensions, means on the slides with which the extensions engage, lifters carried on the extensions, cams for operating the lifters, power-driven means for operating the levers, said means being constructed to lock the levers in position, means under the control of the operator for throwing the power-driven means into operation, and means for automatically interrupting the operation of the power-driven means after the levers have been moved, substantially as described.
56. In a printing-machine, the combination with a form-carrier, of an inking mechanism, means for effecting a movement of the inking mechanism toward and away from the path of the form-carrier, said means including positioning-arms, an operating-bar, actuating connections between the bar and the arms, power-driven means for moving the bar in opposite directions, means for throwing the power driven means into operation, and means for throwing it out of operation after the bar has been moved, substantially as described.
57. In a printing-machine, the combination with a form-carrier, of an inking mechanism, a positioning device operating to place the inking mechanism in or out of contact with the form-carrier, mechanism for reciprocating the inking mechanism toward and away from the path of the form-carrier for each cycle of movement thereof, said mechanism being made efiective by the positioning device, an operating-bar, actuating connections between the operating-bar and the positioning device, power-driven means for moving the bar, means under the control of the operator for throwing the power -driven means into operation, and means for automatically interrupting the action of the power-driven means after the bar has been moved, substantially as described.
58. In a printing-machine, the combination with a form-carrier, of an inking mechanism therefor, a pair of positioning-arms, meansineluding cams carried by the arms for 'efiecting a movement of the inking mechanism toward and away from the path of the formcarrier, said cams being arranged so that they will be operative in one position of the arms, means for moving the inking mechanism toward and away from the path of the formcarrier once for each cycle of movement thereof, said means being carried in part by the arms and being operative in another position thereof, an operating-bar, connections whereby a movement of the bar will place the arms in either of the two positions, and powerdriven means for operating the bar, substantially as described.
59. In a printing-machine, the combination with a form-carrier, of'an inking mechanism therefor, a source of power, normally inoperative actuating connections between the source of power and the inking mechanism, said connections operating to move the inking mechanism toward and away from the path of the form-carrier, a stopping mechanism for the machine, means connected with the stopping mechanism and operating to render the actuating connections operative when the machine is stopped, and additional means independent of the stopping mechanism for rendering said connections operative, substantially as described.
60. In a printing-machine, the combination with a form-carrier, of a driving mechanism for the machine, a loose pulley mounted on the shaft of the driving mechanism, an inking mechanism, normally inoperative actuating connections between the loose pulley and the inking mechanism, said connections operating to move the inking mechanism toward and away from the path of the form-carrier, astopping mechanism for the machine, means connected with the stopping mechanism and operating to render the actuating connections operative when the machineiis stopped,

In a printing-machine, the combination with a form-carrier, of an inking mechanism therefor, a driving mechanism for the machine, a loose pulley on the driving-shaft, a belt-shifter, normally inoperative actuating connections between the loose pulley. and the inking mechanism operating to move the inking mechanism toward and away from the path of the form-carrier, means whereby a movement of the belt-shifter renders said connections operative, a lever, connection between the lever and the actuating connections whereby the movement of the lever renders the actuating connections operative, and
means for automatically rendering said connections inoperative after the inking mechanism has been moved, substantially as described. v

In aprinting-machine, the combination with a rotating form-carrier, of a driving mechanism for the machine, a loose pulley on the driving-mechanism shaft, an operatingbar, normally inoperative driving conections' between the operating-bar and the loose pulley, a belt-shifter, means connected therewith whereby a movement of the belt-shifter renders said connections operative, a lever,
means whereby a movement of the lever renders said driving connections operative, actuating connections between the operatingbar and the inking mechanism whereby a movement of the bar causes a movement of the inking mechanism toward and away from i the path of the form-carrier, means for disconnecting the driving connections from the loose pulley after the bar has been moved, substantially as described.
63. In a printing-machine, the combination with a form-carrienof an inking mechanism therefor, a driving mechanism for the machine, a loose pulley on thedriving-shaft, an operating-bar, normally inoperative driving connections between the loose pulley and the bar, a belt-shifter, means whereby a movement of the belt-shifter may render said driving connections operative, a lever, means whereby a movement of the lever renders said driving connections operative, positioningarms, cams carried by the arms and arranged to producea movement of the inking mechanism toward and away from the path of the form, mechanism for producing a reciprocating movement of the inking mechanism toward and away from the path of the form for each cycle of movement of the form-carrier, a part of said mechanism being carried by the positioning-arms, and adjustable actuating connections between the bar and the positioning-arms, substantially as described.
64. In a printing-machine, the combination with a rotating form-carrier, of an inking mechanism therefor, supports for the inking mechanism, a pair of positioning-arms, ex-
tensions on said arms provided with cams,
means carried by the supports with which the cams cooperate to move the supports, toes carried by the extensions, a cam for operating the toes, an operating-bar, adjustable actuating connections between the bar and the positioning-arms, a loose pulley on the driving-shaft of the machine, normally inoperative driving connections between the loose pulley and the bar, a belt-shifter, means controlled by the belt-shifter for rendering said driving connections operative, a lever, means controlled by the lever for rendering said driving connections operative, and means for automatically interrupting the operation of the driving mechanism when the bar has been moved, substantially as described.
