AWNING-RAISING DEVICE.

To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES ALoYsius Mc- GUIGAN, Jr., residing at 1607 North Thirteenth street, Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in thelVIethods of Shifting and Regulating Awnings, of which the following is a specification.
Myinvention relates toa new and useful improvement in an awning-raising device, and has for its object to provide a device by which an awning may be raised without the use of cords and pulleys in a very short time and with very little exertion upon the part of the user.
Another object of my invention is that the awning may be held at any angle desired.
With these ends in View this invention consists in the details of construction and coinbination of elements hereinafter set forth and then specifically designated by the claims.
In order that those skilled in the art to which this invention appertains may understand how to make and use the same, theconstruction and operation will now be described in detail, referring to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which Figure l represents a perspective view of my device as applied to a window-awning; Fig. 2, an enlargeddetail side elevation of my device, the end of the bell-crank lever being broken off; Fig. 3, a perspective view of the stud which is fastened to the Windowcasing, a portion of the bell-crank lever, and the perforated disk, showing them in the order in which they are assembled; Fig. 4, a similar view to Fig. 2, but showing a modified form of the adjusting device.
In the drawings, A represents an awning, in which B isthe ordinary U-shaped frame, which is pivoted at its ends upon each side of the window-casing. One end of this U- shaped frame is pivoted in the ordinary manner to the window-casing; but the other end is pivoted upon the stud C, which stud is adapted to be secured to the window-casing by screws which pass through the ears C.
D is a bell-crank lever, having one short member D and a longer member D2. This bell-crank lever is also pivoted upon the stud C, and the shorter member D of the lever extends outward and is provided upon its outer end with an eye E, which surrounds one leg of the U -shaped frame B. Ashort distance outward from its pivotal point the longer member D2 of the bell-crank lever extends downward parallel with the windowcasing, forming a handle, and is intended to be grasped by the hand and pushed outward to raise the awning. Upon the outer end of the stud C is formed a square portion F, upon which is adapted to fit a disk G, which has a concentric ring of perforations H. The square portion F has formed through its outer end a hole F', through which is passed a Cotter-pin F2 or other similar device after the disk G has been placed upon the square portion. Thus it will be seen that by pressing outward upon the member D2of the bell-crank lever the awning may be quickly and easily raised. For the purpose of holding the U-shaped frame at an angle between the horizontal and vertical position I form through the bellcrank lever D a perforation I, which when the disk G is in place will be in register with the series of perforations H. Thus when the awning is raised to the desired angle a pin J will be passed through that hole H of the disk which is in register with the hole I of the bell-crank lever, and the pin upon entering the hole I will hold the awning from being'either raised or lowered until said pin is again removed. Thus this pin will not only hold the awning at any of its raised positions, but will also hold it in position when it is down against being blown upward by the wind underneath.
In Fig. t I'have shown a modified form of the adjusting device in which the disk G has formed upon its periphery ratchet-teeth G', and pivoted to the bell-crank'lever is a pawl K, which is held in contact with the teeth by means of a spring L. Thus it will be seen that when the awning is raised the pawl will spring over the teeth of the stationary disk G and prevent any downward movement of the same until the pawl is released.
Of course I do not wish to be limited to the exact construction here shown, as slight modifications could be made without departing from the spirit of my invention.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and useful is- IOO I. In an awning-raising device, a U-shaped frame, a bell-crank lever pivoted coincident with onelegoi'` the U-shaped frame, one member of the bell-crank lever secured directly to the U-shaped frame, the other member of the bell-crank lever adapted to be grasped by the hand, and means for securing thebellcrank lever in any position placed, as Specied.
2. In a device of the character described, a U -shaped awning-frame,eu stud secured tothe window-casing upon which is pivoted one le;r of the U-sha-ped awning-frame, a bell-crank lever also pivoted upon the stud outside of the frame, one member of the bell-crank lever secured to the U-shaped frame, the other member of the bell-crank lever adapted to be grasped by the hand, a washer secured upon the outer end of the stud for preventing the accidental removal of the frame and lever, and means for holding the bell-crank lever at any position placed, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
3. In a device of the character described, a U-shaped awning-frame,a stud secured to the window-casing upon which is pivoted one leg of the U-shaped awning-frame, a bell-crank lever also pivotcd upon the stud outside of the frame, an eye formed upon the outer end of one memberof the bell-crank leverthrough which one leg of the U'shaped frame passes, the other member of the bell-crank lever eX- tending downward parallel With the Windowframe, a square portion formed upon the outer end of the stud, a disk provided with the square opening adapted to lit over the square portion and be secured thereto, said disk provided With a concentric ring of perforatious, a bell-crank lever provided with one perforation adapted to registerwith thc ring of perforations in the disk, and a pin adapted to be inserted through one of the perforations in the disk and the perforation in the bell-crank lever to hold the awning-frame in any desired position, as and for the purpose specified.
