IMPROVED WASHINGMAGHINE.
fitte Signale referat it that' tttter ttint mit mating pint tf its stmt.
TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CON CERN i Be it known that lI, MOSESI. WALTON, of Marlboro, in the county of Stark, and State of Ohio, have invented new and useful Improvements in Washing-Machines; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of my invention, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, oi`- which drawingsu Figure 1 is a sidev view of a machine with my improvements.
Figure 2 is a plan of the same.
Figure' is an end view of the same. i
Figure 4 is a side view of the connecting-rod.
Figure 5'is a plan of the same, part being shown in full, and part in section.-
Figures, 7, 8, and 9 are elevations and plans of several devices for connecting the'crank and'connecting-rod.
The ,nature of my invention consists in a peculiar arrangement of a iiy-wheel,'crank, and connecting-rod,
with a crank on the shaft of a 'washingmiachine of that class where the washing is performed by means of the v partial and reciprocating niotion ot a beater, by means of whiohI cause a rotation of the y-wheel to produce thedesiied motion of thebeater, thus lessening the labor o f the working'of said beater, and greatly increasing the utility of them'achine. i j
To enable others skilled in the art t o make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe its construction and Operation. i
A is the main box of the' machine, supported on legs, as shown, and which serves toihold the water and` i clothes .to be washed.. .The `oo verB is hinged to one side of the box A' by means ofhinges a a. C is the axle i of thebeater G, said beater Gr being made of two arms, crossing each otherat right angles, and having the pins attheir ends, as shown, the 'pins serving to stir the clothes in the water, or in any oth/er suitable manner whereby a beater of this class is produced.f An arm, L, is securedtothe cover B, as shown, and at the endof said arm is` arranged the shaft I, on which is the y-wheelJ and the crank H. A crank, D, is made on the top of the beater-shaft C, andthis crank' is connected to the crank H by means of connecting-rod F.- This connecting-rod F, shown in detail in figs. 4 and 5, has acylinder, E, arranged in one end, and aslottedhole, 1i. indicated by dotted lines in figs. 1 and 4, and seen 'in plan in g. 5. l i' I The crank D is passed through th'e hole band a hole in thecylinder E, the object of the cylinder 'a'nd hole b being to allow of both a horizontal `andl vertical motiont'o the :connecting-rod Fwithont binding". on the crank D. A hole, c, of the form shown in side view and-section, ismade in the other end of the connecting-rod F,'the object of such shape for said hole being to allow the connecting-rod F to conform to the m'otion o f the crank D without binding on the crank H. i l y Two parts of cylinders 'd oZ, shown `in iig. 6, may be used in asuitably-iormed hole in the connecting-'rod F, by putting in these two 'pieces d d, and vthen inserting -the crank D or H, which'holds them in the rod F, ora crankmrbor, C, shown in fig. 7, may be inserted in the rod F, and have the crank D or H attached to it, as
!hown, ora crank-arbor, g, may be inserted in the rod F, as shown in fig. 8, and arranged with reference to the peculiar motion of the connecting-rod- F without'binding orcramping on the crank D or H.
-Another device, shown-in iig. 9, where'theA connecting-rod, showrrat N,fis made of an iron rod, bent as connecting-rod F, and crankD or H, as there shown, either of these last three devices serving to allow of the shown, maybe used. A block,it,fhaving the crank D or -H inserted'in it, and also the end of the connecting rod IIe-the last being inserted at right angles to the .first-issometimes a useful 4mode of connecting the crank D or H,` especially in a very compact machine, where saidcranks might bebrought near together. A metallic beging, with surfaces arranged like the hole c, may also be 'used in connection with the crank H.,
y It is readily seen that, by rotating theily-wheel J, by means of the handle K, a, reciprocating rotary motion of the beater G is eil'ected', by which the washing of the clothes in the tub or box A is effected. The' arm L, on the end of which is secured the shaft I, with iiy-wheel J, is made of such length as that the weight-of the shaft, ily-wheel, and their connections shall nearly balance that of the beater G, cover B, and their connections; thus making' thevcover B, with its'connection's, turn u p readily on the hinges a a. When the cover B is thrown back,
as indicated by dotted red lines at B, the end of the arm L strikes' against the side of the box A, and thus supports the cover in position B, as shown. Y I
Having thus fully described my invention, I wish itvun'ders'tood that I do not claim the box A, beater G shaft C, cover nor any of the devicesshown in gs. 6, 7, 8, and 9, nor the cylinder E, noi` hole c, taken separutely, as my invention; nor do I claim the hing'mg ofthe cover B to the box, es these features have been before used; but v l What I do claim as my invention, and, desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The shaft I, with crank H and flywheel J, and` the connecting-rod F, when used 'ineonnection with the crank D, on shaft C of beater G, substantially inthe manner and-for the purpose herein speeied.`
As evidence that I claim the foregoing, I have hereunto set 'my hand in presence of two witnesses.
MOSES P. vWALTON.
