IMPROVE-D AWN IN G.
fngt Srlgrhule referat in in ttrse etters @nient mit making part nf tige same.
Be it known that we, S. MILLER and J. S. McOLELLAN, in the county ofOliampaign, and State of' Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improvement on an Awning; and we do hereby declaro that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the saine, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view, and
Figure 2 the detached side curtain.
The arms G (one of which is not represented in the drawing) are composed of eight or more pieces of ilat iron riveted together, as shown in the drawing, forming a `joint of easy movement at the extremity of each piece, representing what are Well known as extension-tongs." At H is a spiral spring connected with the first movable piece S of the arm G, whose office is to keep the arm extended. l At K the outward extremities of the arms G are bent at nearly right angles, and are bolted to two thin boards, which are nailed together at the corner, forming a like angle, as is seen at K, thus furnishing a stiff and light support to the lower and outer edge of canvas A. F is a roller around which cord I is wound, and to which the upper edge of the canvas is also attached. Now, by pulling cord I the canvas is wound upon the roller, thc spiral spring resisting just enough to make it Wind tight and smooth. Cord B is fastened at K, and passing through a slotted iron at E, is fastened to roller F, the use of which is to sustain the side curtain O, seen at iig. 2. Oord B is passed through the rings represented at the upper edge of said curtain; and when the roller winds up the cord the slotted iron at E catches the rings, allowing the cord to pass through, and thereby tucking up the side curtain nicely near the roller.
What we claim as our invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is- The combination of extension-arms G, spiral spring H, canvas A, boards K, and cord I, the whole constructed and operating as described and for the purposes set forth.
