PLUME-LEVEL.
SPECIFlCATI-GN forming part of Letters Patent No. 714,957, dated Deeembel` 2, 1902.
Application filed March 13, 1902. Serial No` 98,056. (No model.)
T0 @ZZ whom it may con/carni:
Beit known that I, ORWIG F. SINIGAR, a citizen of the United States, residing at Canton, in the county of Stark and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Plumb-Levels; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description ot' the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to levels, and particularly to plumb-levels.
The object of the invention is to provide a plumb-rule so constructed as to admit of the use of an ordinary plumb-bob in leveling and also so constructed as to obviate liability of warping of the rule.
With this and other objects in view, which will readily appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, the same consists in certain novel features of construction and combination and arrangement of parts, which will be hereinafter fully described, detined in the appended claims, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in Which- Figure 1 is a front elevation of a plumblevel embodying my invention, the same being arranged as forleveling. Fig. 2 is a crosssection of the same on the line 2 2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3is a cross-section on the line 3 3 of Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a fragmentary face view showing the lower portion of the rule broken away to expose the folded arms.
Referring now more particularly to the drawings, the numeral 1 represents the plumb body or rule, in which is embedded a casing 2, having arranged therein a hand orpointer 3, which is attached to a shaft or arbor 3. The plumb-rule also has a plumb-bob aperture 4, whose axis lies in the plane of a longitudinal guide mark or groove 5, which coincides with the axis of the hand 3, which normally traverses the lower half-circle of a scale 2 upon the face of the base-plate of said casing 2. The line 7, which carries the plumb-bob 8, is connected to a ring or eye 6 on the casing 2, wherebywhen the rule is disposed at an angle to the perpendicular the degree of inclination will be shown by the hand 3, pointing to the scale-mark brought beneath it.
In accordance with myinvention the plumb rule or body is composed of two layers or strips 9 and 10 of wood, which are arranged so that the grain of one layer extends reversely to the grain of the other layer. By so constructing the plumb rule or body the tendency of one layer or strip to Warp will be counteracted by the other strip, thus preventing warping of the rule. rIhe two strips are united by gluing them together and using in addition to the glue screws 1l or other suitable fastenings at desired points.
In the bottom and side edges of the rule are formed grooves 12 and 13, and arranged in the bottom groove 12 is a plate 14, which projects exteriorly to form a working edge. To this plate are hinged blades 14', which are adapted to fold into the side grooves and when unfolded to extend at right angles to the rule, with their lower edges in true alinement with the outer edge of the plate 14, and
thus to form therewith a working edge or surface for use in connection with the bob in determining horizontal lines or levels.
Spring-metal strips 15 are fixed at their in ner ends to the face of the rule and carry at their outer or free ends locking-studs or latches 16, (one for each blade,) which work in openings in the rule and are adapted to hold the blades in their open and closed positions. Each latch engages an opening 17 in the cooperating blade to hold the blade closed and a notch 1b in the edge of the blade to hold said blade open. The blades are adapted to swing open by gravity when the latches are retracted, and the rule or body is turned to permit each in turn to drop down out of its groove.
In using the device in determining a horizontal line or level the blades are opened and locked, as in Fig. l, and the plumb-bob suspended in position. The rule is then adjusted until the bob hangs perpendicularly in line with the guide-groove, when the working edge formed by the plate and blades, in connection with the hand 3 and scale, will indicate the level or whether or not the surface under test lies in a true horizontal plane. If desired, the bob 8 may be reversed and allowed to hang below the edge 19 of the rule, which may be used as a working edge, in which case the line is connected to the eye 6 and the hand and arbor are also reversed and TOO coperate with the marks on the upper or opposite half-circle of the scale. In this operation it will of course be understood that the line is either shortened to support the plumpbob above the surface to be measured or the bob is permitted to hang down below said surface, so as to allow the bob to have freedom of movement.`
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the construction, operation, and advantages of my improved level will be readilyapparent, it is thought, without requiring a more extended explanation.
Various changes in the form, proportion, and the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed, and desired to be secured by Letters Patent, is
1. A plumb-rule having opposite end working edges, a plumb-bob opening adjacent to one of said edges, an indicator disposed between the edges, and a plumb-bob reversible to coperate with either Working edge and adapted in one position to occupy said opening, substantially as specified.
2. A plumb-rule having opposite end Working edges, foldable blades adapted to form extensions of one of said edges, aplumb-bob opening adjacent to the working edge with which said blades coperate, an indicator disposed between the edges, and a plumb-bob reversible to coperate with either working edge and adapted in one position to occupy said opening, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
ORWIG F. SINIGAR.
