PAIL. AND COOKER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 714,633, dated November 25, 1902. Application filed February 14, 1902. Serial No. 93,991. (No model.)
T0 at whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JOHN T. BLUFF, a citizen of the United States, residing at Seattle, in the county of King and State of Washington, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Combined Dinner-Pail and Cooker, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accom panying drawings.
This invention relates to improvements in the class'of articles known as dinner-pails, wherein I have combined a cooking oil-stove and a lamp, which are designated for use separately for the different uses for which they are adapted or for use in combination.
It consists of a pail provided with food holding and cooking trays or pans, a cookinglamp positioned beneath the pans in the bottom of the said pail, another lamp for sup-- plying light and also acting as a supplemental heater, and in certain details of construction and combination of parts hereinafter described, and pointed out in the claim.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a central vertical section of a dinner-pail embodying my invention. Fig. 2 isa plan View of the pail proper with the cover and inner trays and stove removed; and Figs. 3 and 4,
respectively. are perspective views of traypans g and h shown in Fig. 1.
The letter a indicates the pail proper, but which in order to avoid confusion I will designate as the case, having an attached bail b and is preferably cylindrical in form. In-, tegral with and extending inwardly from the rim of said case is a shelf a, and a reflector d, substantially vertical, provides two compartments e andf. The shelf 0 is inclined downwardly from the sides of the pail and is provided with an opening. This opening is approximately rectangular and extends inward from the edge of the shelf, whereby the open end thereof will be closed by the adja cent side of the pail-when the shelf is secured in position. By this construction the tray 9 when inserted in position will not contact with the reflector cl.
A tray g of similarhorizontal cross-section to the opening in'the top of compartment f, supported by its flanged rim '11, extends downwardly into said compartment, and another tray h, formed of two integral sections-that is, a lower portion adapted to fit in the' aforesaid tray and an upper portion being cylindrical or of similar cross-section to case a. The 5 5 tray g and the interfitting part of tray h taper from the top down, whereby they are more readily separated and the combustion-gases, coursing beneath and around the sloping sid es,more quickly heat the contents to a cooking-point. A lamp-stove 7c is provided in bottom of compartment f, of which k designates the wicks, inclosed in burner-tubes 70'. l is a peep-hole in the peripheral wall of the case, whereby the flames of the said lamp-stove are regulated, and closure is made by a sliding gate m. tis a lens or glass pane mounted in a hinged door at, through which a lamp 0 is inserted. Draft and vent holesp and 19, in proximity to the bottom and top, respectively, of the case, insure a suitable supply of air for combustion as well as the escape of the smoke or gases therefrom. Holes 3 with flanged edges are disposed in the bottom of both of said compartments and designed for candlesockets, which may be used instead of the aforesaid lamps. t is a cover for the upper tray.
The operation of the device is as follows: The cooking, which would usually consist only in making tea or coffee, is done in the lower tray g by means of the lamp-stove it, after which its flames may be extinguished and the other lamp lighted, heating the said reflector, from which by radiation the compartmentf and in turn the trays g and h, with their contents, are kept warm.
As will be noticed, this device may be used in a variety of ways-namely, for cooking, for keeping the viands warm and free from 0 all danger of burning, and lastly as a lanternwhich are advantageous to those employed underground, as in mines, or, in fact, to any one working on a night-shift.
Having thus described my invention, what 5 I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The combination with a pail provided at its upper edge with an inwardly-projecting downwardly-inclined shelf provided with an opening extending inward from its edge, of a tray provided at its upper edge with an outwardlyprojecting flange, said tray arranged in the cured to the side of the said pail and arranged IO opening of the said shelf and supported therebeneath the shelf thereof, substantially as in by its flange, a removable section of the described. same diameter as the pail provided with a In testimony whereof I aflix my signature 5 horizontal lower face, a downwardly extendin presence of two witnesses. ing tray formed integral with the lower face JOHN T. BLUFF. of said section and projecting into the first- Witnesses: named tray, a cover for the said removable PIERRE BARNES, section, a heating means, and a reflector se- JOHN N. PERKINS.
