ANDREW ANDERSON, OF LONDON, ENGLAND, ASSIGNOR TO JOHN ALVES, OF TUNBRIDGE WELLS, ENGLAND.
SMOKE-CONSUMING APPARATUS FOR FURNACES.
QPEGIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 714,434, dated November 25, 1902.
Application filed December 9, 1901. Serial No. 85,289. (No model.)
To ctZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ANDREW ANDERSON, a subject of the King of Great Britain and Ireland, residing at 23 College Hill, in the city of London, England, have invented a certain Smoke-Consuming Apparatus for Furnaces, (in respect whereof I have applied for a patent in Great Britain to bear date September 5, 1901, No. 17,774,) of which the following is to a specification.
This invention relates to improved means applicable to steam-boiler and other furnaces whereby under the influence of steam-jets air is supplied for admixture with the furnacer 5 .gases, with the object of effecting the complete combustion of the fuel, of preventing the escape of smoke, and of increasing the efficiency of the furnace.
The invention also relates to means for controlling the supply of air and steam and insuring their being fed in proper relative proportions.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a transverse section of a furnace, illustrating the application of myimprovements, the view being taken from the interior of the furnace looking in the direction of the door. Fig. 2 is a vertical section, and Fig. 3 a plan corresponding with Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is an exterior view of the front of the furnace. Fig. 5 is a side view corresponding with Fig. 4, but having a portion of the flue broken away to show the arrangement of the internal parts. Fig. 5 is a view of the air-bridge at the back of the furnace, showing the connections, with the means at the front of the furnace, for effecting the regulation of the steam and air supply to the said bridge in proportion to that supplied to the front of the'furnace, the view 40 being a rearward extension of Fig. 5.
I When steam-jets are employed to inject air into a'furnace at its front end and where the, steam is prior to its use for such purpose superheated by being caused to traverse pipes or passages arranged immediately within the furnace-door, I form the air-heating passage A in the form of an arch, the ends A A of which are supported upon, but pass through holes in, the dead-plate B, the extremities A A of the arch being open to the ash-pit C. The face of the arch toward the fire is formed at its upper part with slots at a, through which the air under the influence of steam-jets is distributed over the fire. In front of the arched air-passage toward the fire is arranged another arched pipe. D, through which the steam is led for the purpose of being superheated. The arched steam-passage is also supported upon, but passes through holes in, the dead-plate B. The steam enters at one extremity D of this passage and after traversing the same is led from the opposite extremity D through a pipe D arranged transversely beneath the dead-plate B and again passing up through the dead-plate reaches the jet-pipe D which is placed immediately behind the slots at a in the upper part of the arched air-passage A, above referred to.
From the steam-pipe D beneath the deadplate B is led a pipe D for conveying steam to the bridge E at the back of the furnace, (shown in Fig. 5%) the supply of steam to the front and to the back of the furnace being controlled by screw-valves D D respectively'set in such a manner as to insure the supply of steam fed to the front of the furnace being properly proportioned to that supplied to the air-bridge at the back of the furnace. The steam-supply pipe 01 at the front of the boiler is, moreover, provided with a controlling-valve d, operated by a lever (P, which by means of a rod d actuates a damper e for regulating the admission of air through the bridge E at the back of the furnace and by means of a link d and radial arm 61 the dampers d 'at the front of the furnace, so that by the movement of a single hand-lever d the supply of steam both to the front and to the back of the furnace and of air to the arched air-heating passage A and to the bridge at the back of the furnace are controlled. For purposes of adjustment the hand-leverd as well as the radial arm d may be slotted.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. Asteam-boiler or otherfurnace provide with an arched air-heating passage arranged immediately within the furnace door and having the ends supported upon and passing through the dead-plate and slots in the upper part, an arched steam-pipe or superheater arranged in front of the arched air-heating passage and also supported upon and passing through the dead-plate, and a steam-jet pipe arranged immediately behind the slotted part of the arched air-heating passage and in communication With the superheater by way of a pipe portion beneath the deadplate and another pipe portion which passes up through the latter, substantially as and for the purposes specified.
2. A steam-boileror other furnace provided with an arched air-heating passage arranged immediately Within the furnace door and having the ends supported upon and passing through the dead-plate and slots in the upper part, an arched steam-pipe or superheater arranged in front of the arched air-heating passage and also supported upon and passing through the dead-plate, a steam-jet pipe arranged immediately behind the slotted part of the arched air-heating passage and in communication with the superheater by Way of a pipe portion beneath the dead-plate and another pipe portion which extends up through the latter, a pipe led from the pipe portion beneath the dead-plate to the bridge at the back of the furnace, screw-valves in the steam-pipe portion beneath the dead-plate, and a hand-lever fulcrumed in the plug of the cock in the steam-supply pipe and a rod and a link and radial arm for connecting said lever with dampers pertaining respectively to the bridge at the back of the furnace and to the arched air-heating passage, substantially as and for the purposes specified.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing Witnesses.
ANDREW ANDERSON.
