JOHN ALVES, OF LONDON, ENGLAND.
SMOKE-CONSUMING APPLIANCE FOR FURNACES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 707,584, dated August 26, 1902. Application filed February 11, 1901. $eria1No.46,888. (No model.)
To rtZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN ALvEs, a subject of the King of Great Britain and Ireland, residing at and 51 Lime street, in the city of London, England, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Smoke-Consuming Appliances for Furnaces, (in respect whereof I have applied for a patent in Great Britain, to bear date November 2, 1900, No. 19,691,) of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improved means applicable to steam-boiler and other furnaces whereby heated air is supplied in regulated quantities for admixture with the furnacegases, the objects being to effect the complete combustion of the fuel, to prevent the escape of smoke, and to increase the efficiency of the furnace.
The invention may be applied to the furnaces of steam-boilers generally, including Belleville and other water-tube boilers, as well as to the furnaces of brewers coppers and like heating vessels.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a longitudinal section of a furnace provided with my improved means for supplying heated air thereto and adapted for use with a water-tube boiler. Fig. 2 is a transverse section taken on the line a a: in Fig. 1, one-half of the furnace being shown.
Smoke-consuming apparatus constructed according to my improved method consists, essentially, of a perforated bridge or bar a in conjunction with a passage 12 or with passages whereof the surfaces are heated by means of the fire and through which the incoming air passes on its way to the fire. Steam-jets c are arranged behind and opposite the perforations ct or some of them. The perforated bridge or bar may be arranged on either side of the fire-grate, as shown, or across the end thereof and may be formed as a single casting or built up on the sectional system, the several sections constituting the bridge or bar being threaded upon a through-bolt. The perforations a, whereby the heated air is admitted from the passage 1) or passages to the fire, are in the form of tapered slots which 50 gradually diminish in width from the bottom upward, their height varying according to the thickness of the adjacent fuel or other conditions prevailing. The surfaces at the upper and lower ends of the tapered slots are upwardly inclined from the interior outward, the object being to effect a better admixture of the heated air with the furnace-gases. The bridge or bar, or each section thereof, may, moreover, be specially formed for the reception of linings d, of fire-clay or like refractory material, such linings being under such circumstances less liable to derangement through want of care in stoking.
In the form of the apparatus as illustrated the perforated bar a forms part of a rectangular frame or casting a the latter being set in a recess in the side of the fire-grate. Air is admitted to the passage or passages b by Way of the openings e c, the flow of air being regulated by means of dampers ff. The dampers are provided with trunnions f f and are operated rotatively from the front of the furnace by means of the leverf By moving this lever over the notched quadrant f and inserting the stop f in one of the notches the dampers may be set at any desired angle, a regulated supply of air proportionate to the degree of opening being permitted to enter the passage or passages 1) from the ash-pit and to become heated by contactiwith the heatingsurfaces b b of said passage or passages. By means of the conneeting-rod g and levers g (shown in dotted lines in Fig. 2) the adjustment of the dampers on either side of the ash-pit may be offected simultaneously.
That I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a steam-boiler or other furnace, a the chamber, a rabbet or recess in each side Wall of the said chamber and extending above and below the fire-bars, a longitudinal casting set in each said recess, vertical slots in the upper part or bar of the said casting whereof the sides converge from the bottom to the top and the upper and lower ends incline upward, a steam-jet pipe traversing the recess behind the slots, openings in the lower part of the said casting and dampers in said openings whereby the admission of air to the recess or chamber behind the casting is regulated, substantially as herein described.
2. In smoke consuming apparatus for name to this specification in the presence of steam-boiler and other furnaces, the combitwo subscribing Witnesses. nation with the dampers f of the trunnions T f f, lever f at the front of the furnace, JOEL ALVES' 5 connecting-rod g and levers g substantially Witnesses:
as and for the purposes specified. W. HERBERT CLARKE, In testimony whereof I have signed my FRANK E. BENZ.
