UNITED STATES ATENT FFICE.
HENRY G. SAVYER, OF CARPENTERSVILLE, ILLINOIS.-
SHEET-METAL SHOVEL-CLIP.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 714,403, dated November 25., 1902.
Application filed August 16, 1902.
To all whom. it may concern:
Be it known thatI, HENRY G. SAWYER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Carpentersville, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sheet-Metal Shovel- Clips, of which the following is a specification.
`My invention relatesto improvements in clips for adjustably attaching shovel-blades to suitable standards or supports, and is especially intended for use in connection with the shovel-blades of cultivators.
The object of my invention is to provide aI sheet-metal clip so constructed that it may be formed from a single piece ot' sheet metal without heating, while at the same time being so formed as to provide the necessary strength, rigidity, durability, and adjnsta bility, and also so formed as toV be readily and effectively attached to the shovel-blade and adjustably attached to the support or Standard.
Another object of my invention is to provide alight, inexpensive, and durable clip. r
Theseand such other objects as may hereinafter appear are accomplished by the device shown in the accompanying drawings, in
. which- Figure l shows a blank from which my improved clip is formed. Fig. 2 shows the same blank after passing through the punching and forming dies. Fig. 3 shows a section on line 3 3 of Fig. 2. Fig. 4 shows a section on line 4. 4 of Fig. 2. Fig. 5 showsmy improved clip after passing through the first pair of bending-dies. Fig. 6 shows the completed clip attached to a standard of a cultivator. Fig. 7 is a section on the line 7 7 ot Fig. 6, and Fig. 8 is a plan view of Fig. 6 with a portion of the shovel-standard broken away.
In making my improved clip I start with a blank of the general form shown in Fig. l, said blank being provided with four corners or projections A A and B B. I next perforate the corners A A and B B, preferably making a polygonal perforation thronghthe corners A A to ultimately receive the clamping-bolt and dividing the cornersB B with any suitable perforation for the passage of the rivets or other means used for fastening Serial No. 119,888. (No model.)
the clip to the shovel-back. I next place the perforated blank through specially-prepared forming-dies, whereby annular ribs or bosses C are formed around the rivet-holes or perforations b. These ribsare preferably formed as shown in the drawings, so as not only to strengthen the clip adjacent to the rivet-holes b and form a firm support for the heads of the rivets, but also so as to provide the annular bearings c on the under side of the clip and immediately surrounding the perforations b, whereby the clip may more readily be brought into close contact with the shovelbacks and find a secure bearing against the same. The forming-dies also form the corners or ears Ain to pockets I, so arranged as to open toward each otherwhen the clip is bent into shape, thereby so stiftening said ears with relation to the body of the clip that the bodyl of the clip may be bent together by means of a clamping-bolt passed through and engagingthe ears A. Preferably I also form a rib D across the blank, extending from a point adjacent to one of the bolt-holes a to the other bolt-hole et. This will not only serve to give considerable rigidity to the clip, but is preferably so proportioned to the other parts of the clip as to aord an additional bearing-point against the shovel. Next by means of a mandrel or suitable die the clip is bent to the form shown in Fig. 5, and then by means of other suitable dies applied eX- ternally to the sides of the clip the clip is bent to its finished form. The clip may now be Sov riveted to a shovel-back E and then clamped v to a standard F by means of a clamping-bolt G and nut H.
It will be seen from the drawings and the above descriptionthat I have provided a clip which may be formed without heating from a single piece of sheet metal, which is nevertheless properly supported at all points against the various strains to which it is subj ected, and which may be fitted snugly against the shovel-back to which it is riveted, will iind a firm bearing against the standard when clamped in position, and which will yet have sufficient spring to readily release itself from the standard whenever the clamping-nut is sufficiently loosened. In this clip I have an article of light Weight as compare-d with anything now on the market, of great durability,
IOO
and one which may be rapidly and inexpensively and accurately made to any desired size or contour, thereby saving the loss of time and labor in fitting the various clips to the shovels for which they are intended, as is often necessary with the clips best known in this art.
I claiml. Aone-pieceshovel-clipconiprisingasubstantially cylindrical body provided With flanges formed into pockets, the portion of the flange at the bottoni of one of said pockets being provided with a polygonal bolthole and the portion ofl the other flange at the bottom of the other of said pockets being pro'- vided with a bolt-hole arranged substantially opposite to said polygonal bo1t-l1ole,subsian tially as described.
2. Acne-pieceshovel-clipcomprisingasubstantially cylindrical body portion provided with ears, the said ears being provided with rivet-holes and being struck upto form lbosses surrounding said rivet-holes, substantially as described.
3. A one-piece metallic clip forged from a blank and comprising a substantially cylindrical body portion, said body portion being provided with flanges struck up to form pockets, the portion of each of said anges at the bottom of each of said pockets being provided With bolt-holes, and. said body portion being also provided With ears having rivetholes, said ears being struck up to provide bosses surrounding said rivet-holes upon the opposite sides of said ears, and the body portion being provided with a transverse rib, substantially as described.
