Description

tro ALI. wnoM--Ir MAY CONCERN:
@attra ta'trs atwt @ffice lELIAS, SANFORD, OF MERIDEN, CONNECTICUT. Letters Patent No. 71,415, dated November 26, 1867. I
IMPROVIll) .DRAUGHT-A'ITACHMENT POR HORSES.
Be Vit knownf-that I, ELIAS SANFORD, of Meriden, in the county of New Haven, and State of- Connecticut,`
have invented a new and improved Draught-Attachment for Horsesand that the following deseriptiomtaken `1 I Hi in connection with the accompanying drawings, hereinafter referred to, forms a fullland exact specification of the same,1'wh`erein I haveset forth the nature and principles of my said improvements, by which my invention Y maybe distinguished from all others of asimilar class, together with such parts as I claim,` and desire to have i l secured to me by Letters Patent.
4 This invention relatesto a new and improved draught-attachment for horses, whereby the use of traces-isi` 1 1 avoided, and a central draught-chainemploye'd, similar to that used with ayoke'a'nd cattle. y
The object of the invention is to overcome the diicu'lty attending theV ploughing ofA orchards with horses,` tov wit, the stripping of the bark from the trees, in consequence of the ends of the whiffle-trees coming in con` tact with the same. In the accompanying sheet ci' drawings- 7 i Figure 1 is a plan or top view Of my invention.-
Figure 2, a front view of the same. Figure, a transverse vertical section of the saine taken in the line a: x, iig. Figure 4, a plan or top view of a modicaton of the same.
Figure 5, aside or end view of iig. 4. Similar lettersv of reference indicate like parts. A A represents a har, which may be constructed of metal or wood, and curvedupward at its central part, as
shown in g. 2. To the centre of this bar there is attached, by a pivotbolt, a, a short tongue, B, said tongue` i i being forked, so as to lap over the top and bottom edges of the bar A, as shown in iig. `3, and a space allowed l atthe rear side of the bar for the insertion of a spring, I), of India rnbb'enor other suitable material;` Ther-ear i` end of the tongue B is provided with a clevis, c, in which the ring of the draught-chain C is fitted. Toeach i f i end of the bar A, a whifiletrele,lD, is attached,` by a universal joint, d. These'whiiiie-trees are of semieireular` i form, as shown in iig. 1, and bent or curved upward at their ends, as shown in iig. 2. Thecnds of the Whiffle-` i trees are connected to the hames e by screws and nuts, or other proper means, which will admit of the bar and y i Whittle-trees being readily applied to and detached from the harness.
From the abovey description it will be seen that a double-tree an' A ing in contact with them during the operation of ploughing. y p The spring b, inserted in the fork of the tongue, has a tendency to keep the same inpropcr position,i`and at the same time permits of a free adjustment of the bar^A to the movement of the team.`
` d two whiiiie-trees are virtually obtained,` `and `aicentral draught-chain, which eiectually obviates the stripping of bark from trees by thehwhifflc-trees com v y In figs. 4 and 5, my invention is shown adapted to what is known as the Dutch or breast" collar, tnei latter consisting of a breast-strap,f, suspended by straps g g, passing over the neck of the animal, (see iig.
'lhe bar A and whiiie-tres D `are substantially the same as A ID. Having thus described my invention, I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent-fi y i 1 The Whittle-trees- D, connected by a. swivel-joint to the curved bar A,` when such whiile-t-rees are remov-` ably pivoted to the side of the hames e, as herein described, for the purpose specified.
2; `In combination with the curved bar A, whiii'le-trees D, and hames e, the tongueB, when provided with p i theelastic block b, substantially as described, for the purpose specied.`
