NITED STATES Fries.
WILLIAM P. VIIITLEY, OF ST. LOUIS,
MISSOURI, ASSIGNOR TO RAWLINGS FOOT-BALL JACKET.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 714,079, dated November 18, 1902.
Application led August 11, 1902.
To L7/Z whom, t may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM P. WHITLEY, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city of St. Louis, in the State of Missouri, have invented a certain new and useful Improvenient in Foot-Ball Jackets, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact, description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.
The object of my invention is to provide a jacket for foot-ball players which will effectively protect the shoulder-blades and collarbones from injury.
My invention consists in features of novelty hereinafter fully described, and pointed out in the claims.
Figure I is a front View of my improved jacket. Fig. II is a back View. Fig. III is an enlarged section taken on line III III, Fig. I. Fig. IV is a section taken on line IV IV, Fig. III.
The shoulders l of the jacket are made of two pieces of fabric 2 and 3, stitched together to form pockets 4, in which are inserted reeds 5, that extend from the band or collar 6 of the garment to a position about in line with the upper part of the armholes 7. The reeded portion of the garment extends across the front, over the shoulders, and around onto the back, as shown in the drawings, and be- Serial No. 119,174. (No model.)
neath the reeded portion is a pad S, as seen in Figs. III and IV.
9 represents padded shoulder-caps secured to the garment around the upper portion of the armholes and which when the garment is in use overhang the shoulder-blades and protect them from injury, while the collarbone is protected by the reeds 5 and pad 8, both the shoulders and the collar-bone being thus perfectly protected from such injuries as often occur in playing foot-ball.
I claim as my inventionl.' A foot-bali jacket having the shoulder portion formed with pockets in Which reeds are inserted, substantially as set forth.
2. A foot-ball jacket having the shoulder portion formed of two pieces of fabric stitched together to form pockets for the reception of reeds, and pads located beneath said reeds, substantially as set forth.
- 3. A foot-ball jacket having the shoulder portion formed with pockets in which reeds are inserted, and having padded shouldercaps secured to the garment around the upper portion of the armholes, substantially as set forth.
WILLIAM P. WHITLEY. In presence of- E. S. KNIGHT, Gno. H. KNIGHT.
