Abstract

A protective garment, particularly for motorcyclist, characterised by consisting of an undersuit (1) to which protective elements (2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11) are applied in position corresponding to those parts of the body to be protected, and which is intended to be worn in a manner substantially adhering to the user's body underneath any article of clothing.

Description

PROTECTIVE GARMENT PARTICULARLY FOR MOTORCYCLISTS
This invention relates to a protective garment, particularly for motorcyclists.
Motorcyclists'suits of natural or synthetic leather construction are known, provided with protective inserts in the form of padding and/or substantially rigid shields which in the case of a fall absorb the impact to protect those parts of the motorcyclist most expose to injury and fracture (shoulders, elbows, knees etc.).
A drawback of these known suits is that they have to be constructed of materials of a certain quality (leather) to ensure effective retention of said inserts by sewing, without any sagging in the region in which they are applied.
A further drawback is that the effectiveness of these inserts depends on the ability to ensure that the position remains stable in corrispondance with those parts of the body to be protected, which means that such inserts cannot be applied to garments which do not closely adhere to the motorcyclists' body.
A further drawback is that such inserts obviously increase the cost of the suit, a cost which increases proportionally with the number of suits possessed by the motorcyclist.
Because of these various drawbacks, motorcyclists'suits of the aforesaid type provided with inserts represent a garment of essentially professional type the use of which is mainly restricted to competitions, in which the risk of falling is highest and the consequences for the motorcyclist in the case of a fall can be very surious, enhanced by the high speeds concerned.
An object of the invention is to obviate all these drawbacks by providing protection for the motorcyclist which is suitable for general use rather than only for sporting activities.
A further object of the invention is to provide protection for the motorcyclist in the case of a fall even if wearing conventional clothing.
A further object of the invention is to provide protection for the motorcyclist in the case of a fall without substantially involving those costs normally necessary to obtain the same result.
A further object of the invention is to provide an article which can be used for protective purposes not only in motorcycling but also in other sporting activities in which the danger of falling exists, and in particular in skiing, skateboarding, cross-country cycling, mountain cycling and the like. These and further objects which will be apparent from the description given hereinafter are attained according to the invention by a protective garment, particularly for motorcyclists, characterised by consisting of an undersuit to which protective elements are applied in position corresponding to those parts of the body to be protected, and which is intended to be worn in a manner substantially adhering to the user's body underneath any article of clothing.
A preferred embodiment of the present invention is described hereinafter with reference to the accompanying drawing which represents a front view of a protective garment according to the invention.
As can be seen from the drawing the protective garment according to the invention consists of a body stocking 1 constructed of synthetic material which is preferably elasticized so that it adheres perfectly to the motorcyclist 'body.
In position corresponding with those parts of the body which in the case of a fall are the most exposed and must therefore be protected, there are provided protective elements substantially of two types, one consisting of padding preferably formed from soft polyethylene or another expanded closed-cell material such as moplen.
In the illustrated example, which relates to the use of the protective garment under a motorcyclist's suit, the body stocking 1 has applied to it two paddings 2 in correspondence with the shoulders, two paddings 3 in correspondence with the chest, two paddings 4 in correspondence with the elbows and forearms, two paddings 5 in correspondence with the thighs, two paddings 6 in correspondence with the knees and two paddings 7 in correspondence with the legs.
The shape of these paddings is designed to ensure ample protection to the underlying parts of the body while at the same time allowing a limited freedom of movement to the motorcyclist.
The body stocking 1 also has applied to it two shields 8 in correspondence with the paddings 2, two shields 9 in correspondence with that part of the padding 4 relative to the elbows, two shields 10 in correspondence with that part of the padding 4 relative to the forearms and two shields 11 in correspondence with the paddings 6. Of these the shields 8, 9 and 11 are cup-shaped to better absorb the impact consequent on a possible fall.
The protective garment according to the invention, which consists of the body stocking with the various protective padding and shield elements applied, is worn by the motorcyclist so that it adheres to his body, and over this garment he can wear any other garment such as a motorcyclist's suit or even a normal suit.
The described body stocking obviously represents the most complete form of the protective garment, which can be replaced by a partial garment to be worn under a jacket or a pair of trousers.
The fact of having transferred all the protective elements from the external suit, on which they are traditionally present, to the internal body stocking results in numerous advantages and in particular:
- it enables effective protection to be obtained while allowing the user to wear any article of clothing irrespective of its material or shape; in particular, the article of clothing can also be of non-adherent type without involving any risk of displacing the protective elements from the corresponding parts of the body to be protected; moreover the article of clothing can be of a material other than leather, this having be previously necessary to avoid the risk of the applied protective elements sagging especially of the critical points (shoulders, elbows, knees); - it makes the use of a top suit independent of the use of the protection, this latter being then limited to only circumstances of effective necessity;
- it enables effective protection to be obtained while allowing wide freedom in choice of top suits which, now having no need to comprise incorporated protective elements, are of substantially lower cost.

Claims

C L A I M S
1. A protective garment, particularly for motorcyclist, characterised by consisting of an undersuit (1) to which protective elements (2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11) are applied in position corresponding to those parts of the body to be protected, and which is intended to be worn in a manner substantially adhering to the user's body underneath any article of clothing.
2. A protective garment as claimed in claim 1, characterised in that the undersuit (1) is formed of elasticized synthetic fabric.
3. A protective garment as claimed in claim 1, characterised in that the protective elements are in the form of padding (2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7).
4. A protective garment as claimed in claim 3, characterised in that the protective elements are constructed of closed-cell expanded material.
5. A protective garment as claimed in claim 4, characterised in that the protective elements are constructed of soft polyethylene.
6. A protective garment as claimed in claim 1, characterised in that the protective elements (8, 9, 10, 11) consist of shields of semirigid material.
7. A garment as claimed in claim 1, characterised in that the shields (8, 9, 10, 11) consist of concave bodies.
8. A protective garment as claimed in claim 6, characterised in that the shields (8, 9, 10, 11) are constructed of moplen.
9. A protective garment as claimed in claim 1, characterised in that the shields (8, 9, 10, 11) are applied to the undersuit (1) over the padding (2, 4, 6).
10. A protective garment as claimed in claim 1, characteised in that the undersuit (1) is of whole-body type.
11. A protective garment as claimed in claim 1, characterised in that the undersuit (1) is of half-body type.
