SCREEN.
SPECIFICATLON forming part of Letters Patent No. 712,971, dated November 4, 1902. Application filed October 1l, 19,00. Serial No. 32,7] 9. V(No model.)
To all whom it muy concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY LE FEVRE SAN-k DERS, a citizen of the United States, andfa resident of Jersey City, in the countyv of Hudson and State of New'Jersey, have invented a new and Improved Screen, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
rlhis invention relates Ato a window-screen for keeping out iiies and other insects, which screen involves certain novelties of construction, permitting its ready adjustment toY av ily adjustable to windows of any size, when.
in place is perfectly rigid andis adaptedto slide on strips on the window-frame to raise or lower or otherwise dispose it, as desired.
This specification is the disclosure of one form of the invention, while the claims define the actual scope thereof.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forminga part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure l is an elevational view of the invention. Fig. 2 is a section on the line 2 2 of Fig. l. Fig. 3 is a section on the line 3 3 of Fig. l; and Fig. 4 is a section similar to that in Fig. 2, except that the parts are shown in extended position. Y
Referring to the drawings, the screen is made up of two sections, each of which comprises a vertically-extending end rail ct and top and bottom rails b and c. These rails b and c carry the screen or netting d, and the ends of the rails b and c'opposite the rail a are provided with a bar e, which extends between the top and bottom rails b and c to connect them with each other and Which serves also as a means to which the outer edge of the netting d may be secured. The rails h and c of each section are arranged to slide on each other, so as to adjust the width of the screen, and these parts are held to move in the proper manner and fastened rigidly when in desired adjustment bythe two bolts f, which are carried by the rails b and c of one section and project through longitudinallydisposedslots g in the rails of the other section. By these means the sections may be moved freely on each other, but they areheld to move true, and by tightening the nuts on the bolts fthe two sections may be clamped .firmly together, so as to form practically a rigid frame. The'screen when adjusted to the window and thevsections fastened together 5 5 may slide freely on strips on the windowframe with the same facility as a screen formed of a single rigid framing which has to be made especially for the window with which it is used. of the seciionwhich carries the boltsfare provided with extensions b' and c at their ends, which serve tolie against the top and bottom rails of the other section, in which The top and bottom rails h and c 6o I other section the slots g are formed, and when theV sections. are drawn far apart, as illustrated in Fig. 4, the extensions b' ando pass over the ends of the slots and cover the saine, so as to prevent insects from passing through the slots.
to joining the top and bottom bars and to carrying the adjacent edge of the screen serve, further, to effect tight connections between the two sections of the screen, so that The bars e, in addition 7o insects may not pass between these parts.
This is illustrated in Figs. 2 and 4, where each bar e is illustrated'as engaging the netting of the section other than that on which the bar is carried. One of the top rails may be provided, as is shown in Fig. 3, with a 8o ledge h3, which overhangs the other top rail and effects a snug connection, so that the window-sash may be moved down firmly on the screen and a tight iit secured. The frame of the screen being rigid, as above explained,
no other support for the inner ends of the vrails b and c is necessary.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patentl. A sliding and extensible screen, consisting of two sections movable one upon the other, each section comprising an end rail and a top and bottom rail secured to the end rail iiush with one side thereof, the end rails being formed of a single piece and of a thickness about equal to the combined thickness of the top rails or bottom rails4 and provided with longitudinal grooves in their outer edges to receive and slide upon a guideway on the rco Window-frame, the top and bottom rails of one section being longer than the rails of the other, the shorter rails'being provided with longitudinal slots and the longer rails with two bolts each, said bolts passing through the slots of the shorter rails and having nuts on their ends, the ends of the longer rails serving to close the slots ofthe shorter rails when the screen is extended, and a netting secured to each section, whereby a screen is produced which can be adjusted to t any Window and when adjusted the sections can be rmly secured together to form practically a rigid frame so that it will slide freely on the guide- Ways on the Window-frame, as set forth.
2. A sliding and extensible screenconsisting of two sections, movable one upon the other, each section comprising a top and bottom rail, an end rail to which l[he top and bottom rails are secured flush with one side.
thereof, a bar secured to the inner ends of the top and bottom rails and projecting beyond the inner edges of the same, the end rails being formed of a single piece and of a thickness about equal to the combined thickness of the top rails or bottom rails and provided with longitudinal grooves in their outer edges to receive and slide upon guideways on the window-frame, the top and bottom rails of one section being longer than the rails of the other section, the shorter rails being provided with longitudinal slots and the longer ones with two bolts each, said bolts passing through the slots of lthe shorter rails and having nuts on their ends, and a netting for each section, as set forth.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
