Description

PATENTED Nov 2e 1867 Ziff-22.2121@ i @uiten tetes @stmt ffice.
WILLIAM G. BEDFORD, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
Letters .Patent No. 71,266, dated November 26, 1867.
IMPROVEMENT IN HOSE-COUPLINGS.
litige .rlnhnle referir it it tigen tettert utent mit milling' pnt ai tte same.
T0 ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Beit known that I, W. G.'BEDFORD, of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, have invented an improvedCoupling for Hose, Pipe, ctc. and I do hereby declare the following to `be a full, clear, and exact description of the same.
My inventionconsists of a coupling, composed of two sections, constructed und adapted to each other in .the peculiar manner fully described hereafter, and applied to hose or other tube, ns well as to rods, for the purpose of readily connecting the sum-e together and disconnecting them fromench other.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, reference being had to the accompanying drawing which forms a part of this specification, and in which- Figure 1 is a sectional elevation of my improved coupling.
Figure 2, a. detached sectional view.
Figure 3, u section on the line 1-2, iig. 1; and i Figure 4,11, section on the line 3-4, iig. 1, showing the parts in c. position they occupy when the two scctions of the coupling are being connected together. v
' The improved coupling consists of the two sections A and A', the former being enlarged from the pointy to its outer end, so as to form o socket, a, for the receptiontot u tubular projection, a', on the section A. ofthe coupling. Within the socket a is a shoulder, on which restsa packing-ring, c, and on the outside ofthe section A is en annular projection or collar,f. Within the socket a, at opposite sides of the same, are two lugs or projections, d d, having inclined'lower edges, x, the lugs'being at such a. distance spart as to permit the pssage between them of projections or lugs ere o n the opposite sidesy of the tubular projection a of the section A', each of the suidvlugs being inclined at the upper edge, ns'shown in the drawing, and'havng, on the outside, teeth it', for a purpose described hereafter. In a recess inthe section A. its a. curved spring-catch, n, which is securedat one endto thc section, and has at the other end a. projection, m, with :tu4 inclined face and an abrupt shoulder, the said projection extending through an opening, s, into the socket a, and catching into the ratchetteeth on the lugs e e of the tubular projection a. When the two parts or sections of the coupling have to be secured together, the projection a is introduced into the socket a until its end rests on the packing-ring c; it is then turned so es to bring the lugs e under the lugs ci, and their inclined edges in contact with each other, the end of the tubular projection being thus forced firmly against the packingring c. As the section A is turned in the direction of its arrow, iig. 3, the spring-catch will slide readily over the toothed edge of the adja cent lug e, but will eectuclly prevent the turning back of Ythe section A until the spring-catch is released from the ratchet-teeth, when the two sections can be readily uricouplcd.
The above-described coupling, although especially applicable to hose, may be usedin connection with other tubes or pipes, or in connection with rods used for boring wells, and for other purposes.
I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patentc 1. A coupling, consisting of u section A, with a. socket a, shoulders b, und lugs d d, and a section A, havy ing a tubular projection a', lugs e e, and shoulder j', the two sections being constructed and adapted to each other substantially as described.
2.- Thc combination of the spring-catch n, ou the socket A, with the tubular projection a and its rstchetteeth c' i'.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification inthe presence of two subscribing witnesses.
WM. G. BEDFORD.
