GOO-CART.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 712,651, dated November 4, 1902.
Application filed March 20, 19Q2- Serial No. 99,056. (No model.)
To'ctll whom it may concern: go-carts provided with hinged backs are in 50 Be it known that I, DAVID R. COLLIER, a common use. citizen of the United States, residing at Gard- The go-cart is provided with a canopy or ner, in the county of Worcester and 00111 umbrella support consisting in the present monwealth of Massachusetts, have invented instance of a bent rod D, held at the rear of a new and useful Improvement in Go-Carts, the go-carl. and extending forward over its 5 of which the following is a specification, acbody in position to support a canopy or umcompanied by drawings forming a part of the brella D. Go-carts as heretofore constructsame, in whiched, so far as I am aware, have had the um- Figure 1 represents a portion of the body brella or canopy support held by the hinged of a go-cart having attached thereto an um- :back or by the fixed body of the go-cart. In brella-supporting device embodying my inthe former case the position of the umbrella vention. Fig. 2 represents the umbrella-supor canopy sn pport was changed whenever the porting device with the back of the go-cart in hinged back was raised or lowered and re- 15 its raised or nearly vertical position. Fig. 3 quired to be adjusted with every change in represents the umbrella-supporting device the position of the hinged back. When the with the back of the go-cart lowered or in its umbrella or canopy support is held by the inclined position, and Fig. 4 is a top View of fixed body of the go-cart, the raising or lowthe ball-and-socket j oint by which the umering of the hinged back changes its position 2o brella-rod is held. relatively to the canopy or umbrella. In my Similar reference-letters refer to similar improved device I-support the bent rod D by parts in the different views. passing its vertical member through a ball E,
My present invention relates to a device held in a socket F, forming a ball-and-socket for supporting a canopy or umbrella upon a joint upon the end of anarm G, which is 25 go-cart havingahinged or swinging back, by hinged at G to a bracket G near the top which the inclination of the back is varied; of the hinged back C. The arm G is proand it has for its object to provide a means vided on its under side with a lug G to for supporting the canopy or umbrella of a which is pivoted the upper end of a link H. go-cart in the same relative position to the The lower end of the link H is pivoted to the 30 hinged back, so that the face of the occuouter end of a fixed arm I, which is attached pant will be shielded whatever the position. to the under side of the body B and projects of the hinged back of the go-cart, and whererearward therefrom. The ball E is divided by the supporting-bar of the canopy or um-. into the halves E E and is held in its socket brella will always be maintained in a hori-. By tightening the screw J the rod D lower edge at C, whereby the inclination of will be held in fixed relation to the arm G,

The means and the arm G will be maintained in a horifor raising and lowering the back and supzontal position by means of the link H, whatporting it in a different position is, however, ever the position of the hinged back 0 may notshown in the drawings, as its construcbe, as the pivotal joints H and G will be tion and operation will'be wellunderstood,as maintained at the same distance from the pivotal joint 0 and the pivotal joint H As the back 0 is raised or lowered the umbrella D Will be carried with it and held in the same relative position thereto, as illustrated in Figs. 2 and 3, and as the arm G is constantly held in a position parallel with the fixed horizontal'arln I the umbrella-rod Will be held in its horizontal or other fixed position.
W'hat I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The combination with the hinged back of a go-cart, of an arm pivoted to said back and provided with means for supporting a canopy or umbrella rod, of a link by which said arm is pivotally connected with the fixed portion of the go-cart,whereby said arm is maintained in the same position independently of the angle of the hinged back, substantially as described.
2. The combination with the hinged back of a go-cart, of an arm pivoted to said back, a
Vball-and-socket joint in said arm to receive a canopy or umbrella rod, a canopy or umbrella rod held in said ball-and-socket joint and means for maintaining said pivoted arm in the same position independently of the an gle of the hinged back, substantially as described.
3. The combination with the hinged back of a go-cart, of an arm pivoted to said hinged back, means supported by said arm and adjustable thereon for holding a canopy or umbrella rod and means for maintaining said pivoted arm in the same position independently of the angle of said hinged back, substantially as described.
4. The combination With the bottom B of a go-car't, of a back 0 hinged thereto at O, a fixed bar I projecting from the bottom, an arm G pivoted to said back and provided with means for supporting a canopy or umbrella rod and a link H by which said arm is pivotally connected with said bar I, substantially as described.
