` l Illlllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllll v un f Ill UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE BENJAMIN EDGAR, OF LAWRENCE, KANSAS.
SEAL-LOCK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 712,275, dated October 28, 1902.
Application filed May 31, 1902- Serial No. 109,820. (No model.)A
T0 all whom it may con/cern,.- l
Be it known that I, GEORGE BENJAMIN ED- GAR, a citizen of the United States', residing at Lawrence, in the county of Douglas and State of Kansas, have invented new and useful Improvements in Seal-Locks, of which the following is a specification.
My present invention has relation to improvements in seal-locks, and the same is designed as an improvement on Letters Patent granted to me April 23,1901,Seria1 No. 672,853; and it consists in the construction and arrangement of parts, as will be hereinafter described, and particularly pointed out in the claim.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure is a perspective View of a seal-lock constructed according to my invention. Fig. 2 is alongitudinal section of the same, showing the bolt in its locking position. Fig. 3 is a crosssection showing the position of the bolt when in a locked position.' Fig. lis a perspectiveA view of the seal-holder.
Referring to the drawings, the numeral 1 represents the base-plate, having extended ends 2 and 3, provided with openings 4 4, by means of which the base-plate is secured to its place on the car by bolts. To the front central portion of the base-plate I provide a lock-casing 5, havingV Vdiarnetrically opposite side openings 6, which communicate with an opening in an extended guide 8, which is secured to the lock-casing. Formed or otherwise secured on the extension 3 of the baseplate is a projection 9, having an opening 10, arranged in line with the openings of the casing and its extended guide.
The numeral 11 indicates the seal-holder, which is detachably mounted in the lock-casing and is provided with a central channel or opening 11, arranged in line with theV openings in said lock-casing, said extended guide and said projection for a purpose presportion extending through an opening in the rear back wall of the seal-holder.
The numeral 16 designates the locking-bar, having its rear forward end portion stepped or cut away and provided with a guidegroove 17, while its 'central rear 'face portion is provided with an opening. 18. l The locking-bar 16 is slidably connected through the openings of the guide 8, seal-holder 11, and lockcasing 5, and thence through the opening of the projection 9, the cut-away portion and guide-groove 17 serving todepress the projecting end of the bolt for the purpose of engaging the opening 18 in the lockingbar,so as to secure the parts of the lock together.
When the seal-holder is locked in the lockv casing 5,'the rear wall thereof rests on the shoulder of the bolt by means of the upper end of the bolt passing through the opening therein, whereby said seal-holderis rendered capable of being depressed in the lock-casing to permit of the locking-bar being slidably disengaged from the seal-holder after the seal has been broken.
I wish it to be understood that I do not confine myself to the rprecise construction shown in my drawings and heretofore particularly described in my specification, but reserve to myself the right to make such alterations and changes therein for the better carrying out of my invention without departing from the essential features and the true principles and scope thereof. .I
What I claim is- In a seal-lock, the combination with the base-plate having therewith a lock-casing provided with a housing, and an upright projection on said base-plate,of a spring-bolt mounted in the housing havinga shouldered upper end projecting through an opening in said casing, a detachable, seal-holder mounted in the casing having an opening in its rear Wall to coact with the upper end of the bolt, and its shoulder, said lock-casing, projection, and seal-holder having communicating openings, a locking-bar having a stepped or reduced end adapted to be slidably connected in said openings, and an opening in the'locking-bar to engage the upper end of the spring-bolt, substantially as specified.
